This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis consists of three parts; in the first part, parameter sets of the Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) model for five challenging binary liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) relevant to the cluster of excellence Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass (TMFB) are generated by means of the AVT.SVT in-house tool BOARPET (Bilevel Optimization Algorithm for Rigorous and Robust Parameter Estimation in Thermodynamics). In the 2nd part, the risks that may result from the aforementioned violation of thermodynamic criteria for process simulation are assessed, by means of several unit operation models in Aspen Plus, as well as flash simulations, formulated and solved in GAMS. The respective parameter sets are selected from the first part, either because these are found to result in violation of thermodynamics, or due to the particular shape of the implied Gibbs free energy curve with respect to composition. In the 3rd part, stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric formulations from literature for the simulation of combined diffusive and chemical equilibrium are compared using local and global solvers through GAMS, for the case study SBA/DSBE/water. The publication is made within the framework of a scientific cooperation at the Vilnius University of Technology/Lithuania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on phase equilibrium engineering (PEE) aims to fill the gap between the books on reactors and separation process design and the textbooks on chemical engineering thermodynamics. The goal is to change the focus from the use of thermodynamic relationships to compute phase equilibria to the design and control of the phase conditions that a process needs. In this way, phase equilibrium thermodynamics is put to work. The main goal of PEE is the design of the system conditions to achieve the desired phase equilibrium scenario that the process at hand requires. In this chapter, the philosophy of phase equilibrium thermodynamic modeling is discussed in the context of process development and chemical plant operation. Typical phase scenarios that are encountered in separation, materials, and chemical process are presented as well as the problem of phase design and the PEE tools.

Book excerpt: For reasons both financial and environmental, there is a perpetual need to optimize the design and operating conditions of industrial process systems in order to improve their performance, energy efficiency, profitability, safety and reliability. However, with most chemical engineering application problems having many variables with complex inter-relationships, meeting these optimization objectives can be challenging. This is where Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) is useful to find the optimal trade-offs among two or more conflicting objectives. This book provides an overview of the recent developments and applications of MOO for modeling, design and operation of chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, energy and related processes. It then covers important theoretical and computational developments as well as specific applications such as metabolic reaction networks, chromatographic systems, CO2 emissions targeting for petroleum refining units, ecodesign of chemical processes, ethanol purification and cumene process design. Multi-Objective Optimization in Chemical Engineering: Developments and Applications is an invaluable resource for researchers and graduate students in chemical engineering as well as industrial practitioners and engineers involved in process design, modeling and optimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with an overview of the phase diagrams of fluid mixtures (fluid = liquid, gas, or supercritical state), which can show an astonishing variety when elevated pressures are taken into account; phenomena like retrograde condensation (single and double) and azeotropy (normal and double) are discussed. It then gives an introduction into the relevant thermodynamic equations for fluid mixtures, including some that are rarely found in modern textbooks, and shows how they can they be used to compute phase diagrams and related properties. This chapter gives a consistent and axiomatic approach to fluid thermodynamics; it avoids using activity coefficients. Further chapters are dedicated to solid-fluid phase equilibria and global phase diagrams (systematic search for phase diagram classes). The appendix contains numerical algorithms needed for the computations. The book thus enables the reader to create or improve computer programs for the calculation of fluid phase diagrams. introduces phase diagram classes, how to recognize them and identify their characteristic features presents rational nomenclature of binary fluid phase diagrams includes problems and solutions for self-testing, exercises or seminars

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of ionic liquid based separation techniques. The glimpse of thermodynamic predictive models along with global optimization techniques will help readers understand the separation techniques at molecular and macroscopic levels. Experimental and characterization techniques are coupled with model based predictions so as to provide multicomponent data for the scientific community. The models will focus more on the a-priori based predictions which gives higher emphasis on hydrogen-bonded systems. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique will also eventually help the readers to apply optimization technique to an extraction process. The overriding goal of this work is to provide pathways for leading engineers and researchers toward a clear understanding and firm grasp of the phase equilibria of Ionic Liquid systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the teaching of phase equilibria emphasizes the relationships between the thermodynamic variables of each phase in equilibrium rather than its engineering applications. This book changes the focus from the use of thermodynamics relationships to compute phase equilibria to the design and control of the phase conditions that a process needs. Phase Equilibrium Engineering presents a systematic study and application of phase equilibrium tools to the development of chemical processes. The thermodynamic modeling of mixtures for process development, synthesis, simulation, design and optimization is analyzed. The relation between the mixture molecular properties, the selection of the thermodynamic model and the process technology that could be applied are discussed. A classification of mixtures, separation process, thermodynamic models and technologies is presented to guide the engineer in the world of separation processes. The phase condition required for a given reacting system is studied at subcritical and supercritical conditions. The four cardinal points of phase equilibrium engineering are: the chemical plant or process, the laboratory, the modeling of phase equilibria and the simulator. The harmonization of all these components to obtain a better design or operation is the ultimate goal of phase equilibrium engineering. Methodologies are discussed using relevant industrial examples The molecular nature and composition of the process mixture is given a key role in process decisions Phase equilibrium diagrams are used as a drawing board for process implementation
