It is hoped that it may be useful to the advanced student, as well as to the practitioner. The absence of references in the text and of any bibliography may disappoint some readers. It was considered desirable, however, not to interrupt the text with references to footnotes, and a bibliography even of those books which have been consulted would have added considerably to the bulk of the volume. The inclusion of a complete bibliography, on the other hand, would have seemed to arrogate to the work a more ambitious character than it aspires to. It is, in effect, an expression of personal opinions, the result of the writer's observations, modified and extended by his knowledge of the views of others, on subjects which have interested him for a good many years, and in regard to which he has had the good fortune to have special opportunities of acquiring experience.
