Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper describes a conservative synchronization protocol for the parallel simulation of queueing networks having C job priority classes, where a job's class is fixed. This problem has long vexed designers of conservative synchronization protocols because of its seemingly poor ability to compute lookahead: the time of the next departure. For, a job in service having low priority can be preempted at any time by an arrival having higher priority and an arbitrarily small service time. Our solution is to skew the event generation activity so that events for higher priority jobs are generated farther ahead in simulated time than lower priority jobs. Thus, when a lower priority job enters service for the first time, all the higher priority jobs that may preempt it are already known and the job's departure time can be exactly predicted. Finally, we analyze the protocol and demonstrate that good performance can be expected on the simulation of large queueing networks."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper presents a new algorithm, the Moving Time Windows (MTW) algorithm, for parallel discrete event simulation. The physical system to be simulated is partitioned into n disjoint sub-systems, each of which is represented by an object. The MTW-algorithm identifies a time window for each object, such that events within different windows can be processed concurrently. The MTW-algorithm has been implemented on a shared memory multiprocessor, a Sequent Balance 8000 with 10 processors. Some performance data for a 4 x 4 torus network, is also reported."

This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical systems are inherently parallel. Intuition suggests that simulations of these systems may be amenable to parallel execution. The parallel execution of a discrete-event simulation requires careful synchronization of processes in order to ensure the execution's correctness; this synchronization can degrade performance. Largely negative results were recently reported in a study which used a well-known synchronization method on queueing network simulations. Discussed here is a synchronization method (appointments), which has proven itself to be effective on simulations of FCFS queueing networks. The key concept behind appointments is the provision of lookahead. Lookahead is a prediction on a processor's future behavior, based on an analysis of the processor's simulation state. It is shown how lookahead can be computed for FCFS queueing network simulations, give performance data that demonstrates the method's effectiveness under moderate to heavy loads, and discuss performance tradeoffs between the quality of lookahead, and the cost of computing lookahead. Download or read book Massively Parallel Simulation and Optimization of Queueing Networks written by Pirooz Vakili and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We simulate several variants of a class of queueing networks corresponding to different system parameter values or operating policies - simultaneously. One clock mechanism is used to drive all the variants. This clock synchronizes the system trajectories such that the same event takes place at the same time at all systems. This synchronization is the basis of the massively parallel algorithms we develop. Implementation of the algorithms on the massively parallel Connection Machine and the implications of the approach for performance optimization is discussed.

Download or read book Parallel Discrete Event Simulation of Queuing Networks Using GPU-based Hardware Acceleration written by Hyungwook Park and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation introduces a set of tools that allows the analyst to simulate queuing networks in parallel using a GPU. We then present an analysis of a GPU-based algorithm, describing benefits and issues with the GPU approach. The algorithm clusters events, achieving speedup at the expense of an approximation error which grows as the cluster size increases. We were able to achieve 10-x speedup using our approach with a small error in the output statistics of the general network topology. This error can be mitigated, based on error analysis trends, obtaining reasonably accurate output statistics.
