Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of an international workshop on parallelism in inference systems held in Germany in December 1990. The topicof the workshop is still rather young and several papers in the book are overview articles intended to provide a first orientation toward some of the more intensively investigated subtopics. The main part of the book is a compilation of research papers on parallelization in special domains ofinference such as rewriting, automatic reasoning, logic programming, andconnectionist inference. Appended to the book is a collection of short project summaries received in response to a worldwide email call. The book is intended primarily for researchers working on inference systems who are interested in parallelizing their systems.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems establishes an authoritative reference of DDDAS, pioneered by Dr. Darema and the co-authors for researchers and practitioners developing DDDAS technologies. Beginning with general concepts and history of the paradigm, the text provides 32 chapters by leading experts in10 application areas to enable an accurate understanding, analysis, and control of complex systems; be they natural, engineered, or societal: Earth and Space Data Assimilation Aircraft Systems Processing Structures Health Monitoring Biological Data Assessment Object and Activity Tracking Embedded Control and Coordination Energy-Aware Optimization Image and Video Computing Security and Policy Coding Systems Design The authors explain how DDDAS unifies the computational and instrumentation aspects of an application system, extends the notion of Smart Computing to span from the high-end to the real-time data acquisition and control, and manages Big Data exploitation with high-dimensional model coordination.

Book excerpt: This book offers readers a set of new approaches and tools a set of tools and techniques for facing challenges in parallelization with design of embedded systems. It provides an advanced parallel simulation infrastructure for efficient and effective system-level model validation and development so as to build better products in less time. Since parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) has the potential to exploit the underlying parallel computational capability in today’s multi-core simulation hosts, the author begins by reviewing the parallelization of discrete event simulation, identifying problems and solutions. She then describes out-of-order parallel discrete event simulation (OoO PDES), a novel approach for efficient validation of system-level designs by aggressively exploiting the parallel capabilities of todays’ multi-core PCs. This approach enables readers to design simulators that can fully exploit the parallel processing capability of the multi-core system to achieve fast speed simulation, without loss of simulation and timing accuracy. Based on this parallel simulation infrastructure, the author further describes automatic approaches that help the designer quickly to narrow down the debugging targets in faulty ESL models with parallelism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems establishes an authoritative reference of DDDAS, pioneered by Dr. Darema and the co-authors for researchers and practitioners developing DDDAS technologies. Beginning with general concepts and history of the paradigm, the text provides 32 chapters by leading experts in ten application areas to enable an accurate understanding, analysis, and control of complex systems; be they natural, engineered, or societal: The authors explain how DDDAS unifies the computational and instrumentation aspects of an application system, extends the notion of Smart Computing to span from the high-end to the real-time data acquisition and control, and manages Big Data exploitation with high-dimensional model coordination. The Dynamically Data Driven Applications Systems (DDDAS) paradigm inspired research regarding the prediction of severe storms. Specifically, the DDDAS concept allows atmospheric observing systems, computer forecast models, and cyberinfrastructure to dynamically configure themselves in optimal ways in direct response to current or anticipated weather conditions. In so doing, all resources are used in an optimal manner to maximize the quality and timeliness of information they provide. Kelvin Droegemeier, Regents’ Professor of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma; former Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy We may well be entering the golden age of data science, as society in general has come to appreciate the possibilities for organizational strategies that harness massive streams of data. The challenges and opportunities are even greater when the data or the underlying system are dynamic - and DDDAS is the time-tested paradigm for realizing this potential. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book systematically introduces Dynamic Data Driven Simulation (DDDS) as a new simulation paradigm that makes real-time data and simulation model work together to enable simulation-based prediction/analysis.The text is significantly dedicated to introducing data assimilation as an enabling technique for DDDS. While data assimilation has been studied in other science fields (e.g., meteorology, oceanography), it is a new topic for the modeling and simulation community. This unique reference text bridges the two study areas of data assimilation and modelling and simulation, which have been developed largely independently from each other.

Book excerpt: OPEN (Object-oriented Process, Environment and Notation) is an international de facto standard object-oriented development method developed and maintained by the OPEN Consortium. OPEN consists of the OPEN Modeling Language (OML) as well as process, metrics, etc. This book specifies OML, a small but vital component of the complete OPEN method. It uses diagrams, tables, Web references and text to present the syntax, semantics and rationale behind OML. It documents version 1.0 of OML so that object-oriented modelers can learn and use it, and upperCASE vendors can support it.
