Book excerpt: Parallax of Growth explores the ideas of economy and ecology and the factors that have put them on a collision course. Bjerg argues that our current mode of economic organization is characterized by an inherent debt drive, whereby the creation of money through the issuance of commercial bank credit has locked our economy into a vicious circle of forced growth and increasing debt. Parallax of Growth is not a catalogue of solutions to the ecological or the economic crisis. The book aims to shift the inquiry from what shall we do? to why have we not already done it? In order to address the challenges of our contemporary times of crisis, we need to understand how the idea of growth is deeply ingrained in the ideology as well as the organization of our society. The book aims to open the space for philosophical thinking about this important issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the last ten years the issue of debt has become a serious problem that threatens to destroy the global socio-economic system and ruin the everyday lives of millions of people. This collection brings together a range of perspectives of key thinkers on debt to provide a sociological analysis focused upon the social, political, economic, and cultural meanings of indebtedness. The contributors to the book consider both the lived experience of debt and the more abstract processes of financialisation taking place globally. Showing how debt functions on the level of both macro- and microeconomics, the book also provides a more holistic perspective, with accounts that span sociological, cultural, and economic forms of analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s, the collapse of the classic Hollywood studio system led in part, and for less than a decade, to a production trend heavily influenced by the international art cinema. Reflecting a new self-consciousness in the US about the national film patrimony, this period is known as the Hollywood Renaissance. However, critical study of the period is generally associated with its so-called principal auteurs, slighting a number of established and emerging directors who were responsible for many of the era's most innovative and artistically successful releases. With contributions from leading film scholars, this book provides a revisionist account of this creative resurgence by discussing and memorializing twenty-four directors of note who have not yet been given a proper place in the larger history of the period. Including filmmakers such as Hal Ashby, John Frankenheimer, Mike Nichols, and Joan Micklin Silver, this more expansive approach to the auteurism of the late 1960s and 1970s seems not only appropriate but pressing - a necessary element of the re-evaluation of 'Hollywood' with which cinema studies has been preoccupied under the challenges posed by the emergence and flourishing of new media.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Characterization of Crystal Growth Defects by X-ray Methods' held in the University of Durham, England from 29th August to 10th September 1979. The current interest in electronic materials, in particular silicon, gallium aluminium arsenide, and quartz, and the recent availability of synchrotron radiation for X-ray diffraction studies made this Advanced Study Institute particularly timely. Two main themes ran through the course: 1. A survey of the various types of defect occurring in crystal growth, the mechanism of their different methods of generation and their influence on the properties of relativelY perfect crystals. 2. A detailed and advanced course on the observation and characterization of such defects by X-ray methods. The main emphasis was on X-ray topographic techniques but a substantial amount of time was spent on goniometric techniques such as double crystal diffractometry and gamma ray diffraction. The presentation of material in this book reflects these twin themes. Section A is concerned with defects, Section C with techniques and in linking them. Section B provides a concise account of the basic theory necessary for the interpretation of X-ray topographs and diffractometric data. Although the sequence follows roughly the order of presentation at the Advanced Study Institute certain major changes have been made in order to improve the pedagogy. In particular, the first two chapters provide a vital, and seldom articulated, case for the need for characterization for crystals used in device technologies.

Highly recommended.” —Rick Hanson, PhD, author of Buddha's Brain Learn the accessible and deeply compassionate practices for healing trauma, known as the Five Strengths of applied Zen Buddhism. More than a philosophy, these body-based practices are backed by modern neuroscience research, and they can be applied by anyone suffering from trauma to begin experiencing relief. Mindfulness teacher Sister Dang Nghiem, MD, is an inspiration for anyone who has ever suffered from abuse, life-changing loss, severe illness, or the aftermath of war. In Flowers in the Dark, she brings together her lived experience as a survivor, certified MD, and ordained Buddhist teacher to offer a body-based, practical approach to healing from life's most difficult and painful experiences. Offering insights from Buddhist psychology and simple somatic practices for tapping into our Five Strengths—our inner faculties of self-trust, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and insight—Sister Dang Nghiem’s approach to trauma is radically accessible; it begins with awareness of our breathing. With each chapter containing a progression of guided reflections and exercises, this book can be read as an adjunct to therapy and a helpful guide for moving through trauma in the body. With the practice of mindfulness, we can access our strength as survivors and our joy in being alive.

But over the past two decades, astronomers have discovered thousands of “exoplanets,” including some that could be similar to our own world, and the pace of discovery is accelerating. In a fascinating account of this unfolding revolution, Lee Billings draws on interviews with the world’s top experts in the search for life beyond earth. He reveals how the search for exoplanets is not only a scientific challenge, but also a reflection of our culture’s timeless hopes, dreams, and fears.

Book excerpt: Friends, welcome to the next testament! The truth be known from the start, the ideas of The Next Testament: Into the Adulthood of Civilization are not the ideas of the verse writer. The ideas of the next testament are the Truth of Creation, and as such, they belong to all selves of Civilization. We encourage you to read the ideas of The Next Testament with the opened mind of enlightened goodwill golden rule honesty. Granted, at times the verse may seem simultaneously simple and mysteriously convoluted. It may even seem flippant and frivolous at times. But let it be known, the ideas are the absolute Truth of Creation, and you will see it all makes perfect enlightened sense that the Truth of Creation belongs to all selves of Civilization. But the proof? Where is some proof that the ideas of The Next Testament: Into the Adulthood of Civilization are the Truth of Creation meant for all selves of Civilization? Meager versing aside, the proof is in the Truth itself. Yes, the ideas contained in The Next Testament are the Truth of Creation and will be seen in and accepted and applied from the evolved Adulthood view that self is the self of all selves, and selfish is the selfish of all selves of the body politic of Civilization. And the reality of the actualized happiness of all selves pending into our adulthood has evolved up from stage to stage and age to age as our view and understanding and devotion to universal truth has evolved. From in the beginning, the purely physical truth of embryonic Prehistory, to the Creation given first breath emergence with viable soul into blind Ancient infancy, up to and through the self-selfish emotional truth of our Classic youth--from which, let us remember, we had to be saved, Civilization--into the higher emotional idealism of Middle Ages adolescence, there to be tempered with the truth of logic of Enlightened democratic young adulthood, we have evolved. And now here we are in our twenty-first century, ready for Adulthood devotion to fully free free will truth of Creation's wisdom. Civilization, our view of the Truth has evolved to the obviousness of the Adulthood view that the happy actualization of Civilization is the happy actualization of all selves of Civilization. And be reminded, Civilization, agreement to, and with, the guidance of the congruent expectations of the testaments with parent Creation--the Old, the New, and now the Next--has meant all the difference in our evolutionary growth up from Age to Age. Yes, through the Old, the New, and now the Next, our view of the Truth has evolved age to age from the self of self-selfish up to the adulthood view of the self of all selves. Please read The Next Testament in the spirit of the highest view of Creation's Truth.
