Book Synopsis The radical otherness that heals by : Alhena Caicedo Fernández
Download or read book The radical otherness that heals written by Alhena Caicedo Fernández and published by Universidad de los Andes. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Radical Otherness That Heals proposes an interesting theoretical advance in various schools of local and regional, and national and transnational analysis. It is based on a multilocal ethnography and a detailed sociological and political reading of the interactions between institutions and social and cultural representations of otherness. The original theoretical proposal consists of reading the reconfiguration of shamanisms stemming from processes of ethnicization and patrimonialization, and skillfully reconstructing the national ideological space and the most recent effects of multiculturalism through representations of otherness Anne-Marie Losonczy, Director of Studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris "The concept of the yagecero field serves as the axis of this innovative research that intertwines a multi-sited ethnography with a biographical approach to the actors. An extensive review of the literature on indigenous shamanisms, their networks, national politics, inter-ethnic relations and representations of the radical alterity that heals makes it possible for the reader to draw near, based on the close proximity of neo-shamanic practices, to perceive the national and transnational influences that are an integral part of the ongoing dynamics of this phenomenon. The analysis of neo-shamanism and the practices of the taita yageceros in Colombia contributes to deepening current debates on contemporary shamanisms and the broader issue of new religiosities, the transformations of indigenous groups and their politics of identify. This book provides a valuable input to the characterization of New Age spirituality from its understanding as a localized practice. It opens a space to compare the aforementioned manifestations in Colombia with similar ones in different countries." Esther Jean Langdon, Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil

Book Synopsis The Challenges of Uncertainty by : Jeremy Robbins
Download or read book The Challenges of Uncertainty written by Jeremy Robbins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1998 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and lucidly written book introduces the reader to the Baroque, the richest period of Spanish literature and culture. Jeremy Robbins shows how its creativity responded directly to the unprecedented sense of uncertainty fostered by developments across Europe. He argues that it was above all this scepticism which led Spaniards to employ literature and art to question the boundaries of reality and illusion. The result was the creation of some of the most inventive, entertaining, challenging and powerful works of imagination in Europe. Currently there exists no other concise introduction to Spanish Baroque literature and culture. The book considers in detail works by the major novelists, dramatists, poets and painters. Part of its novel approach is the attention the author gives to key issues such as honour and identity, the influence of social and literary institutions like the court and the church, and the place of women as both creators and consumers of culture. It also considers neglected literary forms, such as the aphorism and the emblem, as well as the immensely popular and influential political and moral writings of the day. A comprehensive glossary to major and minor figures is included.

Book Synopsis The Zephyrs of Najd by : Jaroslav Stetkevych
Download or read book The Zephyrs of Najd written by Jaroslav Stetkevych and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-12-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arabs have traditionally considered classical Arabic poetry, together with the Qur'an, as one of their supreme cultural accomplishments. Taking a comparatist approach, Jaroslav Stetkevych attempts in this book to integrate the classical Arabic lyric into an enlarged understanding of lyric poetry as a genre. Stetkevych concentrates on the "places of lost bliss" that furnish the dominant motif in the lyric-elegiac opening section (nasib) of the classic Arab code, or qusidah. In defining the Arabic lyrical genre, he shows how pre-Islamic lamentations over abandoned campsites evolved, in Arabo-Islamic mystical poetry, into expressions of spiritual nostalgia. Stetkevych also draws intriguing parallels between the highlands of Najd in Arabic poetry and Arcadia in the European tradition. He concludes by exploring the degree to which the pastoral-paradisiacal archetype of the nasib pervades Arabic literary perception, from the pre-Islamic ode through the Thousand and One Nights and later texts. Enhanced by Stetkevych's sensitive translations of all the Arabic texts discussed, The Zephyrs of Najd brings the classical Arabic ode fully into the purview of contemporary literary and critical discourse.

Book Synopsis The Potency of Pastoral in the Hispanic Baroque by : Anne Holloway
Download or read book The Potency of Pastoral in the Hispanic Baroque written by Anne Holloway and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A careful re-evaluation of pastoral poetics in the early modern Hispanic literature of Spain and Latin America. In her analysis of the verse of representative poets of the Hispanic Baroque, Holloway demonstrates how these writers occupy an Arcadia which is de-familiarised and yet remains connected to the classical origins of the mode. Herstudy includes recent manuscript discoveries from the Spanish Baroque (Fábula de Alfeo y Aretusa, now attributed to the Gongorist poet Pedro Soto de Rojas), the poetry of Luisa de Carvajal y Mendoza and Francisco de Quevedo. The study considers pastoral as a global cultural phenomenon of the Early Modern period, its reverberations reaching as far as Viceregal Peru. The tradition of the pastoral as a site for the discussion of 'great matters in theforest' has deep roots, and re-emerges to praise the urban hearts of empire. Furthermore, it proves to be a site of spiritual encounter--a poetic space that frames the staging of indigenous conversion in the poetry of Diego Mexiaand Fernando de Valverde. Within the intricacies of this literary construct, surface artistry sustains an effect of artless innocence that is vibrantly contested across the secular, sacred, parodic and colonial text. Anne Holloway is a Lecturer in Spanish, Queen's University Belfast.

Yet its history reveals even more fascinating tales: secrets and follies, victory and failure, poetry and art. City of Illusions brings together Granada's many stories--the archaeological forger, the renegade French general, the garrotted liberal heroine, the Jewish poet who served two Muslim rulers. This colourful cast of characters takes us from the founding eleventh-century dynasty and the building of the Alhambra, through the Reconquista, French occupation and Spanish Civil War, right up to the present day. Granada's history has long been fought over, rewritten, idealised or buried. This rich, elegant book sets the record straight on a beautiful, elusive city, with all its quirks, mysteries, intrigues and triumphs.
Book Synopsis Artifice and Invention in the Spanish Golden Age by : Stephen Boyd
Download or read book Artifice and Invention in the Spanish Golden Age written by Stephen Boyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corpus of literary works shaped by the Renaissance and the Baroque that appeared in Spain during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had a transforming effect on writing throughout Europe and left a rich legacy that scholars continue to explore. For four decades after the Spanish Civil War the study of this literature flourished in Great Britain and Ireland, where many of the leading scholars in the field were based. Though this particular 'Golden Age' was followed by a decline for many years, there have recently been signs of a significant revival. The present book seeks to showcase the latest research of established and younger colleagues from Great Britain and Ireland on the Spanish Golden Age. It falls into four sections, in each of which works by particular authors are examined in detail: prose (Miguel de Cervantes, Francisco de Quevedo, Baltasar Gracian), poetry (The Count of Salinas, Luis de Gongora, Pedro Soto de Rojas), drama (Cervantes, Calderon, Lope de Vega), and colonial writing (Bernardo Balbuena, Hernando Dominguez Camargo, Alonso de Ercilla). There are essays also on more general themes (the motif of poetry as manna; rehearsals on the Golden Age stage; proposals put to viceroys on governing Spanish Naples). The essays, taken together, offer a representative sample of current scholarship in England, Scotland, and Ireland.
