Book excerpt: The authors queried 336 paraeducators working in 34 high schools or special programs offering transitional services for adult students with disabilities. The survey included (a) the contexts in which they support students with disabilities, (b) their knowledge about core competencies in educating these students, (c) the job-related tasks they perform most frequently, (d) their perceived ability to perform these tasks effectively, and (e) their need for further training across these knowledge and task areas. The study replicated a study conducted by Carter, O'Rourke, Sisco, and Peluse (2009) surveying paraeducators working in K-12 settings. The authors found that paraeducators worked with a broad range of disabilities in multiple types of transitional school or program settings, with moderate supervision using varied types of teaching strategies, and they received most of their training on the job. Although most paraeducators reported having adequate training across knowledge standards, the quality of training received was reported as informal. Reported tasks performed most frequently were nontransition related. Preparing for transition and IEP plans were less frequently performed and trained for; while tasks less pertinent to students in transitional settings were more frequently performed and prepared for such as one-to-one instruction. Supervision under a certified teacher was reported to be moderately occurring (less than 50% of the time). Future research and development of standards for transitional paraeducators working with adults with disabilities is recommended. Identification of needed specific skills should be coupled with more formal training.

Book excerpt: The recent focus on transition from school to working life has created a growing concern in Oregon about teachers with elementary certification as their initial certification who earn a special education certificate and teach students with disabilities in secondary settings. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among initial certifications (elementary, secondary, and K-12), where Oregon high school special education teachers received the major part of their transition skills training, and their self-perceived needs for further transition skills training. The population for the study consisted of 213 secondary special education teachers of students with mild disabilities from throughout Oregon. The instrument was a survey-type questionnaire that included 14 transition skill competencies for teachers. Subjects were first asked where they received the major part of their training in each of the transition competency skills. Next, they were asked to rate their self-perceived needs for further training in each of the transition skills. The instrument design was validated through a Delphi procedure. Data were collected during the spring of 1987 and the fall of 1988. No significant statistical relationships were found between initial certification and where teachers received the major part of their transition skills training, or their self-perceived needs for further training. However, three major implications became apparent from the data. First, decisions regarding coursework could be examined at the preservice level. Next, opportunities for preservice teachers to participate in team decision-making activities should be examined. Lastly, personnel inservice preparation programs at the district level should be examined to ensure that transition skill competencies for teachers are included. Recommendations included follow-up studies to find out if the size of school, type and level of endorsement, major and minor fields of study and years of teaching may have an effect on transition skills training of secondary teachers.

Book excerpt: With increasing frequency, students with learning differences are transitioning out of high school ill-prepared for the rigor and freedom of a postsecondary setting. The transition from high school to college is marked by the transfer of responsibility for accessing and monitoring services and performance. The familiar model of special education services at the high school level changes significantly at the postsecondary level, shifting responsibility from the K-12 school system to the individual student. Research is limited in specific transition processes that manifest into successful transitioning of students with learning differences from secondary to postsecondary educational institutions. This study sought to investigate the quality of a series of non-cognitive transition modules developed to prepare students with learning differences for the postsecondary education setting. For purposes of this research, the terminology learning differences was used, except when referring to learning disabilities as it relates to federal law. Though transition planning for students with learning differences has long been discussed and supported by federal mandate, there are shortcomings in the literature as to static or longitudinal studies supporting or refuting practices that support transitioning of students with high incidence disabilities from secondary to postsecondary settings. This study served to provide a systematic, non-cognitive curricular approach to preparation for students with learning differences. The purpose of this study was to determine teacher and high school student perceived effectiveness of a series of non-cognitive transition curriculum modules developed to prepare high school students with learning differences for a postsecondary educational setting. Using a mixed-methods explanatory research design, the researcher collected quantitative data that would be expanded upon by further collection of qualitative data. Using the qualitative data to explain and extend the paradigm created by the presentation of the quantitative data, the research effectively answered the proposed study questions and provided insight into the preparedness of secondary students with learning differences for transitioning to a postsecondary education. Further implementation in secondary settings, with continuous feedback from teachers and students for appropriateness and effectiveness, will provide a sustainable transition curriculum designed to help students with learning differences experience a positive transition to postsecondary education.

Book excerpt: Following high school, students with disabilities continue to lag behind peers without disabilities in success with employment, independent living, community engagement, and post-secondary education. Despite decades of best practice research, the field of special education must evaluate why these discrepancies persist in order to improve long-term outcomes for people with disabilities. This qualitative study examined how students were prepared for their transitions to secondary settings from the perspectives of transition service providers at one northern California high school. Research questions sought to answer how transition occurred at this site, what mechanisms contributed to the transition process, what challenges and successes existed in transitioning students, and under what contextual conditions these events occurred. Data sources included interviews with transition service providers, including administration, related service providers, and case managers, and IEP document analysis of 25% of the active IEPs at the site. Data analysis revealed complex interactions between instructional components for students in the classroom regarding transition and the perceptions, preferences, and values of transition service providers. In addition, a lack of data on student transition outcomes following graduation was found to hinder the improvement of transition service delivery at this site. Service providers' responses revealed a unique set of limitations imposed on service delivery. These results demonstrated how service providers prioritized transition needs in light of contextual limits, which inadvertently restricted the ability of service providers to implement some transition best practices. This study recommends additional site based studies on transition service delivery in order to inform legislation and future best practice research about how transition service theory is put into practice locally.
