Book excerpt: A Practical Framework for Positive Social Change In 1987, Anne Firth Murray had the idea that funding should go to grassroots women's organizations around the globe and that the recipients themselves should decide how to use that money. From that idea, The Global Fund for Women was born. The organization became a major force for good in the world, embodying a new paradigm of philanthropy. In these pages, Murray shares her wisdom, offering guidelines that demonstrate how anyone can turn a clear vision of a better world into reality.

Book excerpt: "Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi is one of the most innovative and inspiring rabbis in the Jewish world today. Often considered the "grandfather of the Havurah movement" and the most influential advocate of the rapidly growing movement of Jewish Renewal, Reb Zalman (as he is known by his countless students and admirers) has earned a reputation as a courageous, profoundly spiritual contemporary master." "Jewish Renewal, as Reb Zalman explains it, is based on Kabbalah, Hasidism, and other forms of Jewish mysticism. "Jewish Renewal does not want to abandon sacred and cherished traditions," teaches Reb Zalman. Rather, the "paradigm shift" advocates of Jewish Renewal call for asks that we recognize - as we have in the past - that there are newly emerging ways of looking at reality. Just as humankind had to adjust to the knowledge that the earth is not the center of the universe, so too do we today have to recognize that our understanding of our world has undergone significant change. Reb Zalman teaches that we must let go of the old paradigms rather than cling to these obsolete ways of thinking. In this book, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi offers what he calls "the journey of my own recontextualization of Judaism as helped by Jewish mysticism."" "Reb Zalman points out that Judaism has undergone several "paradigm shifts" throughout its long history, such as the period after the destruction of the First and Second Temples, when, as Reb Zalman explains, "all of our practice and belief had to be reframed." Paradigm Shift: From the Jewish Renewal Teachings of Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, in addition to being a record of the major teachings of Reb Zalman over the past thirty years, is a call for Jewish renewal once again. A passionate teacher of kabbalistic tradition, Reb Zalman offers a unique blend of Jewish mystical ideas as they encounter the forces and sensibilities of today." "A book of great power and profundity, Paradigm Shift is one of the most creative and inspiring volumes to be published in years."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Remember the pots hammered by spoons from high Manhattan windows, and parades of cars and pick-up trucks holding dear the medical professionals responding to covid-19. This book is part of that chorus, that march, to express appreciation for the giving of care. And beyond doctors and nurses, bless their hearts, to mothers caring for their babies, for captains for their teams, for the soon-to-be widowers for their wives and teachers for their students, but also for the ranchers for their cattle and the contemplative world for our environment. This is a book to think more closely of the support for care, individual as it so often will be, to be woven more closely together in a paradigm of care. Care is always prominent. Care for others, of the family, care for those of the tribe, care for animals and homes and gardens and properties, self-care. And the purse. Even without teaching, compensation, or legislation, care survives, but even with these helpings, it falls short of the need. We live in a crisis of care. Thinking explicitly and beyond health care. There is no mechanism of state and conscience that delivers care to all the venues of need, and seldom in the amounts needed. The reservoirs of care are far from empty, but at a mark that needs topping up. There is need for care advocacy, a care ethic, a paradigm. This book is about that paradigm. A care paradigm may bring comfort and recovery more fully to the people and organic creations of the world. The paradigm hears the moan of indifference. It draws upon the eyes of the heart. The paradigm is about how we see the need for care. The care paradigm, the grand beholding, is manifest in how we provide for others, how we nurture them, give succor, how we are disposed, and are not, to sacrifice to relieve their hurt. It is not only caring for those visibly needing care, unable to care for themselves, but caring for all. It is having a disposition that the hurts, large and small, that all of us carry, arouse concern and appreciation from and for each individual, the community and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary crisis of emerging disease has been a century and a half in the making. Human, veterinary, and crop health practitioners convinced themselves that disease could be controlled by medicating the sick, vaccinating those at risk, and eradicating the parts of the biosphere responsible for disease transmission. Evolutionary biologists assured themselves that coevolution between pathogens and hosts provided a firewall against disease emergence in new hosts. Most climate scientists made no connection between climate changes and disease. None of these traditional perspectives anticipated the onslaught of emerging infectious diseases confronting humanity today. As this book reveals, a new understanding of the evolution of pathogen-host systems, called the Stockholm Paradigm, explains what is happening. The planet is a minefield of pathogens with preexisting capacities to infect susceptible but unexposed hosts, needing only the opportunity for contact. Climate change has always been the major catalyst for such new opportunities, because it disrupts local ecosystem structure and allows pathogens and hosts to move. Once pathogens expand to new hosts, novel variants may emerge, each with new infection capacities. Mathematical models and real-world examples uniformly support these ideas. Emerging disease is thus one of the greatest climate change–related threats confronting humanity. Even without deadly global catastrophes on the scale of the 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic, emerging diseases cost humanity more than a trillion dollars per year in treatment and lost productivity. But while time is short, the danger is great, and we are largely unprepared, the Stockholm Paradigm offers hope for managing the crisis. By using the DAMA (document, assess, monitor, act) protocol, we can “anticipate to mitigate” emerging disease, buying time and saving money while we search for more effective ways to cope with this challenge.

Book excerpt: "A dozen or more humanoid alien infants have been brought to Earth to be given into the care of major Earth governments. This is stunning but distant news - until Morgan is hired to raise one of them, named Blue. When Blue confounds everyone by insisting on coming, with all the attendant government surveillance, to live in Morgan's house, conflict is inevitable and a murder is committed. But the mysteries of the alien boy ( or is it a girl?) in their midst are more profound than the mystery of the crime. Through it all, Morgan's ideals never waver, she truly believes that all beings, human and alien, can live in harmony. Dorsey's skill with characters, both human and alien, and with their complex relationships, will evoke comparisons with the SF classics of Theodore Sturgeon."--BOOK JACKET.

Or that the casualty of a bidding war is often going to be you? Or the presentation you should use when you meet with investors is quite different from the one you should use with potential strategic partners? Or that moves a buyer may make to reduce their risk in an acquisition can end up increasing the chance that they don't achieve the full potential of the combination? Startup acquisitions are counterintuitive. Yet that doesn't mean they're impossible to navigate. Quite the contrary, the Magic Box Paradigm (MBP) is your guide to creating, optimizing, and closing startup acquisitions. The MBP is a holistic approach to creating opportunities for your startup to be acquired-the blueprint for being bought not sold. The MBP is going to put you in a position of strength in conversations with potential strategic partners, show you how to inspire them to create an actionable acquisition thesis, and then how to turn that thesis into an outperforming offer. Once the offer is on the table, the MBP is going to give you the tools to close the deal. And if you like the book - join the community at www.mbp.co

The Pattern Paradigm looks beneath the surface of what passes for truth and presents a new way of understanding. It tells the story of how knowledge is achieved; starting from the basics and progressing to the pyramid of patterns which lie at the heart of thinking. It describes how the pattern paradigm is superior to the status quo paradigm that pervades much of philosophy today. It is able to do this because it is a paradigm of great simplicity and great power. It opens up a new and more accurate way of understanding. It provides the missing link between sense-data and knowledge. It provides new insights into old problems which are not only amazing but also robust and self consistent. It is a book for both keen philosophers and for anyone else interested in philosophy, as it is easy to read and written in layman's terms. If you only ever read one book on philosophy, make it this one. This is a work of genius.'- J. E. Shearer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching and learning in a college setting has never been more challenging. How can instructors reach out to their students and fully engage them in the conversation? Applicable to multiple disciplines, the Decoding the Disciplines Paradigm offers a radically new model for helping students respond to the challenges of college and provides a framework for understanding why students find academic life so arduous. Teachers can help their pupils overcome obstacles by identifying bottlenecks to learning and systematically exploring the steps needed to overcome these obstacles. Often, experts find it difficult to define the mental operations necessary to master their discipline because they have become so automatic that they are invisible. However, once these mental operations have been made explicit, the teacher can model them for students, create opportunities for practice and feedback, manage additional emotional obstacles, assess results, and share what has been learned with others.
