This story is about the author's experiences while serving as an enlisted man in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. It is a condensed narrative of his training in the States, and his experiences in the Eighth Air Force in wartime England in early 1944. While with the Eighth he participated in some of the greatest air battles ever fought. These included bombing raids over Hamburg, Berlin and Leipzig along with other lesser-known targets. His B-17 sustained grievous damage while on a "milk run" over France, and later was shot down while raiding the great industrial city of Leipzig located deep in the eastern part of Germany. Then his narration recounts the trials and tribulations of his bailout, capture, interrogation, and confinement in Stalag-Luft IV. This prisoner of war camp was located in the province of Pomerania, in north central Germany, that is now part of Poland. He was known as "Kriegsgefagen der Luftwaffe" #3057. Incarcerated there for a period of six months, he relates the story of his life as a prisoner of the Germans. Late in the war, as the Russians were driving into Poland, and threatening to encircle their place of confinement, they were marched west in the dead of winter with little food or shelter, for a total of seventy days. It was the worst winter in northern Europe since such records were kept, as attested by the severe weather encountered by our troops during the Battle of the Bulge. While on this march, along with three others, he escaped. After three weeks, and many adventures later, they broke into the British battle lines near Hanover. In February 1945, the Allies launched Operation Thunderclap, a series of maximum efforts against cities in eastern Germany. These deep-penetration raids would tax the bomber crews immensely, as well as bring new devastation to cities yet untouched by US airpower. Meanwhile, the Nazis attempted to move all their prisoners beyond the reach of the Soviet Army’s advancing spearheads, forcing thousands of Allied POWs on a five-hundred-mile, three-month trek that would come to be known as the Black March. Two B-17 crew members, a copilot and gunner, trained together in Gulfport, MS, and, in Fall 1944, were assigned to the longest-serving and most decorated US bomb group in England. However, their paths then diverged. The copilot flew thirty-one missions until the war’s end; the gunner was shot down and captured on his very first combat mission. These crew members both lived—one through Thunderclap and one through the Black March—and this is their story: an account of both constant air combat and travail on the ground. The copilot participated in the bombing of Dresden, where he witnessed a city already too far destroyed to expend additional bombs. The gunner survived the March, and once time was up for Germany, experienced a period in Soviet captivity. New evidence reveals ordinary German people executed Lynchjustiz as well. The perpetrators were not just solely fanatical soldiers or Nazi zealots but also ordinary civilians triggered by the death and devastation inflicted by the war. In Forgotten Casualties, author Kevin T Hall examines Axis violence inflicted on downed Allied airmen during this global war. Compared with all other armed conflicts, World War II exhibited the most widespread and ruthless violence committed against airmen.
