The conference was divided into two 2-day meetings. The conference had two basic objectives: to disseminate tested engineering, education, and enforcement techniques to reduce the incidence of pedestrian accidents, and to present a variety of approaches utilized in the United States, Canada and Europe to create visually attractive, functional, and highly used urban pedestrian spaces. These proceedings present the findings, workshop presentations, case studies, design techniques and overall summaries of the meetings.

Book Synopsis Behavioural Research for Transport Policy by : Brill Academic
Download or read book Behavioural Research for Transport Policy written by Brill Academic and published by VSP. This book was released on 1986-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficiency of transport systems depends on their relevance to those using them. All too often, however, transport policies are implemented at great expense without due regard to the behaviour, and consequent needs, of transport users. Behavioural Research for Transport Policy will improve the lines of communication between behavioural researchers and policy makers. The papers presented at the 1985 International Conference on Travel Behaviour cover the wide range of factors which need to be taken into account when gauging the effect behaviour has on transport requirements and usage. Contributions discuss the variety and usefulness of different survey frameworks; the lifestyle factors affecting transport use, and the problems of cost effectiveness in both survey techniques and the implementation of transport policy.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although economists have long advocated the use of economic instruments in the implementation of environmental policy, they have only recently gained acceptance. There is a growing consensus within the European Union that both Member States and the environment would benefit from the use of such incentive-based economic instruments. Environment, Incentives and the Common Market has been written by members of the Study Group on the Environment and Economics of the National Environmental Forum, which includes economists and social scientists from all the major Dutch universities and research institutes. The book covers a wide range of topics on the use of taxation and tradeable permits in a variety of abatement policies. It concludes with comments on political feasibility.

Download or read book Spatial inequalities and regional development written by H. Folmer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1977 a 'Regional Science Symposium' was held at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Organized because of the recent establishment at the Faculty of Economics of a group that is engaged in teaching and research in the field of regional science, the aim of the symposium was to make university members more familiar with regional science and to introduce the newly created group to the national and international scene. Two separate topics were selected, of potential interest to both re searchers and policy-makers. The first, spatial inequalities and regional development, was chosen because of its central place in regional science. Authors from several disciplines were asked to approach this theme from a general, policy orientated point of view. This ensured the enlightenment of the various dimensions of spatial inequality and its implications for regional policy. The results have been collected in the volume Spatial Inequalities and Regional Development. The second theme focused on spatial statistical analysis. This branch of statistics is a relatively new one which receives growing attention among researchers in the field of applied regional science. The meeting on this topic concentrated on new results of research on the use of appro priate statistical and econometric methods for analyzing spatial data. The papers concerned have been collected into another volume, Explora tory and Explanatory Statistical Analysis of Spatial Data.

Book excerpt: Public Transport is a comprehensive textbook covering the planning of all public transport systems (bus, coach, rail, taxi and domestic air travel) in Britain and other countries with similar systems. The term ‘planning’ is used both in the context of local authority and central government roles and in the work done by transport operators for example, network structures, vehicle type selection. In addition to the various types of transport, the differing needs of the urban, rural and long distance markets are examined. This restructured new edition gives greater emphasis to service quality and marketing issues as well as covering recent changes in legislation, statistics and research findings. Public Transport is of particular interest to transport planners in local authorities and consultancies, managers in transport operations, as well as undergraduates and MSc students of transport planning and those studying for the membership examinations of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

Committee for Study on Urban Transportation Congestion Pricing and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1994 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration requested that the Transportation Research Board and the Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education of the National Research Council conduct a study of congestion pricing for congestion management. To conduct this study, the National Research Council established the Committee for Study on Urban Transportation Congestion Pricing. The committee's deliberations were supplemented by liaison representatives from several groups concerned about the benefits and costs of congestion pricing. After a review of the literature, and drawing from its expertise, the committee commissioned papers on a variety of topics. Volume 1 contains the committee's overview of the material contained in the commissioned papers, its conclusions, and its recommendations regarding the potential of congestion pricing, the need for evaluation of early demonstrations, and other research needs. Volume 2 provides a rich array of information about individual case studies from around the nation and thoughtful analyses by individual scholars about many of the critical issues surrounding congestion pricing., as revised by their authors after the symposium.
