Book Synopsis The Hlubi Chiefdom in Zululand-Natal by : John Britten Wright
Download or read book The Hlubi Chiefdom in Zululand-Natal written by John Britten Wright and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recorded oral history of the Hlubi goes back to an unspecified, semi-mythical time when, it is said, their ancestral chiefs lived near the Lubombo mountains, which lie along the eastern border of present-day Swaziland. About these chiefs nothing else is known, not even their names. Bryant, Stuart, and other researchers of the early 20th century recorded lists - some of them of great length - of supposed Hlubi chiefs (see Appendix), but none of these is reliable for the period before about the mid-18th century, when the Hlubi were already living on the upper Mzinyathi (Buffalo) river in what is now north-west Natal. The earliest recorded praises of their chiefs probably date from about the same period. For Knowledge of the remoter Hlubi past, the historian has to turn from oral traditions to the findings of archaeology.

Download or read book Decentering Translation Studies written by Judy Wakabayashi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book foregrounds practices and discourses of translation in several non-Western traditions. Translation Studies currently reflects the historiography and concerns of Anglo-American and European scholars, overlooking the full richness of translational activities and diverse discourses. The essays in this book, which generally have a historical slant, help push back the geographical and conceptual boundaries of the discipline. They illustrate how distinctive historical, social and philosophical contexts have shaped the ways in which translational acts are defined, performed, viewed, encouraged or suppressed in different linguistic communities. The volume has a particular focus on the multiple contexts of translation in India, but also encompasses translation in Korea, Japan and South Africa, as well as representations of Sufism in different contexts."

Book Synopsis Last Outpost on the Zulu Frontiers by : Graham Dominy
Download or read book Last Outpost on the Zulu Frontiers written by Graham Dominy and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and isolated in the Colony of Natal, Fort Napier was long treated like a temporary outpost of the expanding British Empire. Yet British troops manned this South African garrison for over seventy years. Tasked with protecting colonists, the fort became even more significant as an influence on, and reference point for, settler society. Graham Dominy's Last Outpost on the Zulu Frontier reveals the unexamined but pivotal role of Fort Napier in the peacetime public dramas of the colony. Its triumphalist colonial-themed pageantry belied colonists's worries about their own vulnerability. As Dominy shows, the cultural, political, and economic methods used by the garrison compensated for this perceived weakness. Settler elites married their daughters to soldiers to create and preserve an English-speaking oligarchy. At the same time, garrison troops formed the backbone of a consumer market that allowed colonists to form banking and property interests that consolidated their control.

Book Synopsis Cultures of Memory in the Nineteenth Century by : Katherine Haldane Grenier
Download or read book Cultures of Memory in the Nineteenth Century written by Katherine Haldane Grenier and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection provides a long-overdue examination of the nineteenth century as a crucible of new commemorative practices. Distinctive memory cultures emerged during this period which would fundamentally reshape public and private practices of remembrance in the modern world. The essays in this volume bring together scholars of History, Literature, Art History, and Musicology to explore uses of memory in nineteenth-century empire-building and constructions of national identity, cultures of sentiment and mourning practices, and discourses of race and power. Contributors approach the topic through case studies of Europe, the United States, and the British Empire. Their analyses of nineteenth-century innovations in commemoration at both the personal and the larger civic and political levels will appeal to students and scholars of memory and of the nineteenth-century world.
