Book Synopsis Reflections on the Law of War by : Frits Kalshoven
Download or read book Reflections on the Law of War written by Frits Kalshoven and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 1128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume span a 35-year period of active involvement in the ‘reaffirmation and development of international humanitarian law’. A process under that name started in 1971 and ended in 1977 with the adoption of two Protocols Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 1949, one for international and one for internal armed conflicts. Subsequent developments brought a narrowing of this gap between international and internal armed conflicts, as well as growing recognition of the interplay between the law of armed conflict and human rights, the rediscovery of individual criminal liability for violations of international humanitarian law, the introduction of further prohibitions or restrictions on the use of specified weapons, and so on. In contrast with these positive developments, the period was negatively characterised by increasing disrespect, not only for some or other minor rule (such as what to do with cash taken from a prisoner of war at the time of his capture) but for the very principles underlying the entire body of the law of armed conflict: respect for the other as a human being and, hence, humane treatment of prisoners of war and other detainees, protection of civilians... Throughout the period, the author’s activities ranged from participation in lawmaking and law interpreting exercises, through attempts at explaining the law of armed conflict in its historical context and making propaganda for its faithful implementation, to critical or even bewildered observance of actual events. The papers brought together here reflect these diverse angles.

The 3rd International Conference on Internet, Education and Information Technology (IEIT 2023) was held on April 28–30, 2023 at the Xiamen, China. With the development of science and technology, information technology and information resources should be actively developed and fully applied in all fields of education and teaching, so as to promote the modernization of education and cultivate talents to meet the needs of society. From the technical point of view, the basic characteristics of educational informatization are digitalization, networking, intelligentization and multi-media. From the perspective of education, the basic characteristics of educational information are openness, sharing, interaction and cooperation. With the advantage of the network, it can provide students with a large amount of information and knowledge by combining different knowledge and information from various aspects in a high frequency. Therefore, we have intensified efforts to reform the traditional teaching methods and set up a new teaching concept, from the interaction between teachers and students in the past to the sharing between students. In short, it forms a sharing learning mode. For all students, strive to achieve students' learning independence, initiative and creativity. To sum up, we will provide a quick exchange platform between education and information technology, so that more scholars in related fields can share and exchange new ideas. The 3rd International Conference on Internet, Education and Information Technology (IEIT 2023) was held on April 28-30, 2023 in Xiamen, China. IEIT 2023 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of Internet, Education and Information Technology to a common forum. Book Synopsis Realizing the Distinctive University by : Mark William Roche
Download or read book Realizing the Distinctive University written by Mark William Roche and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Realizing the Distinctive University: Vision and Values, Strategy and Culture, Mark William Roche changes the terms of the debate about American higher education. A former dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame, Roche argues for the importance of an institutional vision, not simply a brand, and while he extols the value of entrepreneurship, he defines it in contrast to the corporate drive toward commercialization and demands for business management models. Using the history of the German university to assess the need for, and implementation of, distinctive visions at American colleges and universities, Roche's own vision benefits from his deep connection to both systems as well as his experience in the trenches working to realize the special mission of an American Catholic university. Roche makes a significant contribution by delineating means for moving such an institution from vision to implementation. Roche provides a road map to creating a superb arts and sciences college within a major research university and offers a rich analysis of five principles that have shaped the modern American university: flexibility, competition, incentives, accountability, and community. He notes the challenges and problems that surface with these categories and includes ample illustration of both best practices and personal missteps. The book makes clear that even a compelling intellectual vision must always be linked to its embodiment in rhetoric, support structures, and community. Throughout this unique and appealing contribution to the literature on higher education, Roche avoids polemic and remains optimistic about the ways in which a faculty member serving in administration can make a positive difference. Realizing the Distinctive University is a must read for academic administrators, faculty members interested in the inner workings of the university, and graduate students and scholars of higher education.
