This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larvae and Pupae of the British Cylindrotominae and Limoniinae (Diptera, Tipulidae) Since the object is to enable the non-specialist to identify the immature stages, the keys are designed to make use of external characters, which are quite adequate to separate the genera, and often to separate species. The details given are those considered useful for identification purposes, and comprehensive details are not included. The characters of the mouthparts have not been used, since comparatively few larvae have been adequately studied, and to include available details of the mouthparts of the genera in the present paper would add greatly to its length with out contributing to its main purpose. Therefore only a very brief and general account of the mouthparts is included. Relatively few references. Are given at the end of the paper, and these are restricted to those having a direct connection with the present study; for further references Alexander Hennig (1950, Crisp and Lloyd and Lindner (1959) should be consulted. A check list of the 39 genera and species-groups recognised as British is given on pp. 213, and of these 34 are included in the larval and pupal keys. The five genera not included (see check list) are either unknown in the immature stages, or have been inadequately described. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New or Little-Known Crane-Flies From the United States and Canada; Tipulidae, Diptera, Vol. 2: From the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, September, 1915; Issued November 10, 1915 In the present paper, the author has undertaken a consideration of the American crane-flies contained in the collections of the Boston Society of Natural History and the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge. These collections are of peculiar interest to the student of crane-flies since they include the numerous types of Johnson, Osten Sacken, and Loew, in addition to a considerable amount of unclassified material. The paper has been divided into two parts, the first being a designation of the single-type specimen of the species of Tipula described by Loew, the second part a continuation of the first paper under this title. I wish to express my deep appreciation to all of the persons who have kindly assisted me in this study, most of whom are designated in various parts of the paper. I am especially indebted to Mr. Charles W. Johnson and to Mr. Samuel Henshaw for the great privilege of examining and studying the invaluable collections in their custody. Part 1. Designation of the Single-type (Lectotypic) Specimen Of the North American Species of Tipula Described By Hermann Loew. The North American crane-flies described by Hermann Loew were included in a series of papers published between the years 1861 and 1872 under the general title of Diptera Americ septentrionalis indigen and appearing in the Berliner Entomologische Zeitschrift. This remarkable series of articles was in ten parts or centuries, each containing the description of a hundred species of flies. The references will be merely to the "Century," with the number of the species in the century and the original pagination.
