This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Mushet (1772-1847) was a self-taught Scottish metallurgist, who experimented with the making of iron and steel while working as an accountant for a foundry, and soon became an acknowledged authority on the subject. In 1800 he patented a method to make cast steel from wrought iron. His discovery that the previously ignored black-band ironstone could be used without additional coal to economically manufacture iron transformed the Scottish iron industry. Moving to England he was connected with several foundries where he continued his research, patenting a method of making refined iron in the blast furnace. He became a managing director of the British Iron Company, and was involved in collieries, railway and canal companies. Mushet was a pioneer in technical writing, publishing many papers in the Philosophical Magazine. This two-volume collection was published in 1840, and includes analytical data on many coals and their coking properties.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute, 1890-1900: General Index, Vols. XXXVI. To LVIII.; Together With a History of the Development of the Iron and Steel Institute; Illustrated by Portraits of the Past Presidents This Index deals with the twenty-three octavo volumes of the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute published during the years 1890 to 1900 inclusive. It has been compiled on the same system as the Index (1869 to 1881) issued in 1883, and as that (1882 to 1889) issued in 1891, to which it may be regarded as a continuation. The figures immediately fol lowing the references relate to the year of publication, the next to the number of the volume (two being issued each year), and the third to the number of the page. The refer ences to the names of Authors and to Subjects are printed in different types. The volume also contains (1) on pages 1 to 30 an intro duction tracing the history of the development of the Insti tute illustrated by portraits of the sixteen past-presidents; (2) on pages 31 to 56 a list of the papers contained in the Journal (1869 to arranged chronologically; (3) on pages 57 to 81 a list of the same papers classified according to subjects, the classification being that adopted since 1886 for the arrangement of the Institute's abstracts of the contents of papers relating to iron and steel and cognate subjects published in other journals; and (4) on pages 83 to 90 an index of authors of papers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Find Out in Iron and Steel focuses on guides in conducting research on the manufacture and applications of iron and steel. The book first emphasizes the role of information services and libraries, literature guides, bibliographies, and periodicals in finding information on iron and steel. Topics include guides to sources of information; select lists of books and sources of information on books; and lists of periodicals. The manuscript then takes a look at the functions of periodical indexing and abstracting services in accessing information, including services dealing with science and technology; services solely focusing on iron and steel; and services dealing with the manufacture of iron and steel. The text also discusses the contributions of handbooks, dictionaries, monographs, treatises, textbooks, and standard works in conducting research on the two elements. English dictionaries that focus on a specific aspect of iron and steel technology, mechanical working, foundry practice, heat treatment, and mechanical properties and testing are underscored. The book also explains the different standards used in the manufacture and testing of iron and steel. The manuscript is a dependable reference for readers wanting to conduct research on the manufacture and applications of iron and steel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel Iron is the most important of all the metals that have been pressed into the service of man, which is due, not only to its great abundance in Nature, but also to its unique properties. The result of this is that no one metal has received so much attention from both practical men and scientists, as is shown by the fact that some of the most prominent men in Europe and America are investigating the many chemical and physical properties of the metal and its application to the requirements of civilisation. Thus an enormous mass of information has accumulated, and is to be found in original papers and books. Portions of the subject are still in their youth and are growing vigorously, so that the teacher of to-day must become the student of to-morrow. On the other hand, parts of it are so old that their origin is lost in the mists of time, and dates back to the first glimmerings of that intelligence which now enables man to utilise to the fullest extent the valuable properties of the metal.
