Book Synopsis The Jews in Australia by : Suzanne D. Rutland
Download or read book The Jews in Australia written by Suzanne D. Rutland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-23 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jews form only a tiny proportion of the Australian population, yet they have made outstanding contributions and have influenced Australian society immeasurably. Stories such as that of Sir John Monash, Australian commander-in-chief during World War I, whose legacy continues through Monash University, show how Jews have reached the highest echelons of Australian society. The Jews in Australia explores what makes the Australian Jewish community different from other Jewish communities around the world. It traces the community's history from its convict origins in 1788 through to today's vibrant Jewish culture in Australia, and highlights the social and cultural impact the Jews have had on Australia. As well as looking at the emergence of a specific faith tradition in Australia, the book also explores how Jews, as Australia's first ethnic group, have integrated into multicultural Australia.

Download or read book Bold Experiment written by John Lack and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's post-war immigration confronts historians with perhaps the greatest paradox in our recent history. Policies and programmes of the 1940s and 1950s, designed and adopted to confirm and fortify our identity as a British-European outpost, eventually resulted in a complete abandonment of racian exclusivity. For more than half a century 'White Australia' was the foundation population policy and socio-cultural programme of the Australian Commonwealth. Bold Experiment, the first general collection of source material to describe and analyse the pattern of our immigration history since 1945, traces the undermining and destruction of 'White Australia', and the goals, policies and programmes which have replaced it. Bold Experiment, a collection of documents, examines the development of immigration policy since 1945, the migrant experience, and the host response. It is divided into four roughly chronological, though overlapping, sections. Section One examines the origins of Australia's 'bold experiment', the development of policy and its implementation between 1945 and 1954, and migrant experiences in those years. Section Two explores aspects of the settlement experience of those who were part of the large migrations from Britain, Italy, Greece and other parts of Europe between the 1940s and the 1970s. Section Three focuses upon the decline of the White Australia policy in the 1960s, its overturning as a consequence of the Vietnam War, the refugee crisis, the settlement experience of migrants from Indochina, and the controversy surrounding their immigration. Section 4 explores the recent debate over desirable and undesirable outcomes of immigration in which one side asserts that it has led to a crisis of national identity, while the other celebrates a new diversity. This section also deals with migrants' perspectives on themselves, their communities and their place in Australian society.

Download or read book The Oxford Companion to Australian Literature written by William Henry Wilde and published by Melbourne ; New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of Australian literature from the first settlement in 1788 to the current day, this book represents the most important achievements in Australian poetry, drama, and fiction as well as non-fictional prose--journals, diaries, biographies, and autobiographies--and details the impact on the writing caused by those historical events that often serve as a work's theme. More than 3,000 informative entries cover subjects such as transportation, exploration, gold discoveries, bushranging, and outback ethos, all of which played a part in the development of the continent's literature as did the pervasive presence and influence of the Aboriginal culture. Entries range from lengthy articles on special topics to brief factual paragraphs explaining words or references. Also provided is information and reference sources on important past and contemporary writers as well as anything and everything that may have influenced their development: the growth of publishing and periodicals; the impact of movements such as nationalism, racialism, and feminism; and the contributions made by booksellers, critics, and literary associations. A major new Oxford Companion, this book makes an intriguing new genre of literature accessible to all readers.
