Download or read book New Readings in the Vercelli Book written by Samantha Zacher and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late tenth-century Vercelli Book (Vercelli, Biblioteca Capitolare CXVII) contains one of the earliest surviving collections of homilies and poetry in the English language. The manuscript's combination of poetry and homiletic prose has generated intense scholarly debate, and there is no consensus concerning the original purpose of the compiler. New Readings in the Vercelli Book addresses central questions concerning the manuscript's intended use, mode of compilation, and purpose, and offers a variety of approaches on such topics as orthography, style, genre, theme, and source-study. The contributors include some of the foremost Vercelli experts, as well as the two most recent editors of the homilies. The remarkable essays in this volume offer the first sustained literary analysis of both the poetry and prose texts of the Vercelli Book, providing important new perspectives on a dynamic and valuable historical document.

Download or read book From Earth to Art written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Earth to Art presents papers from the ‘Early Medieval Plant Studies’ symposium, a meeting designed to explore the various disciplines which could help to elucidate the plant-names of Anglo-Saxon England, many of which are not understood. The range of disciplines represented includes landscape history, place-name studies, botany, archaeology, art history, Old English literature, the history of food and of medicine, and linguistic approaches such as semantics and morphology. This collection represents a first experimental step in the work of the Anglo-Saxon Plant-Name Survey (ASPNS), a multidisciplinary research project based in the University of Glasgow. ASPNS is dedicated to collecting and reviewing, for the first time, the total multidisciplinary evidence for each plant-name, and establishing new or improved identifications. The results will have implications for various historical studies such as agriculture, pharmacology, nutrition, climate, dialect, and more. Included in the book is the first ASPNS word-study, concerned with the Old English word æspe (the ancestor of ‘aspen’), and it is shown that this tree-name had a broader meaning than has hitherto been suspected. This book will be of interest to historians, botanists, archaeologists, linguists, geographers, gardeners, herbalists, conservationists and anyone interested in the crucial role of plants in history.
Book Synopsis Old Names - New Growth by : Peter Bierbaumer
Download or read book Old Names - New Growth written by Peter Bierbaumer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the 2nd ASPNS conference the emphasis regarding the topics of the talks was placed on lexicographic and linguistic matters. In this volume the contributors assess the various problems of working with plant names like foxes glofa and geormanleaf, pulege and psyllium, hlenortear or fornetes folm. A special study analyses the semantic aspects of Old English plant names. More generally plant related discussions deal with the mandrake legend in Anglo-Saxon England and continental Europe, the need for a new publication of the Old English Herbarium and of the Medicina de Quadrupedibus, or the tree names in Anglo-Saxon charters. The conference also served as a platform to introduce the Graz-Munich online project Dictionary of Old English Plant Names.

Book Synopsis Convergent Approaches to Mediaeval English Language and Literature by : Sociedad Española de Lengua y Literatura Inglesa Medieval. International Conference
Download or read book Convergent Approaches to Mediaeval English Language and Literature written by Sociedad Española de Lengua y Literatura Inglesa Medieval. International Conference and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is intended as a scientific conversation between pioneering research and the traditionally leading disciplines of medievalism. With that aim, the collection presents a selection of crucial essays to add to contemporary discussion which, however convergent and synchronous in approach, also pull in heterogeneous distinct ways and enhance the multiple perspectives which are currently embraced in the study of English medievalism. The chapters, fifteen in all, constitute a peer-reviewed selection of papers presented at the 22nd International Conference of the Spanish Society for Mediaeval English Language and Literature (SELIM), which brought together a large number of scholars worldwide, and was held at the Department of Modern Languages of the University of La Rioja in 2010. A brief glance at the bookâ (TM)s contents evinces the manifestly plural ways in which the English Middle Ages, the mesmerising media tempestas, are being addressed in current critical debate, from the diverse areas of linguistics, literature, teaching methodology and translation. In all, the book becomes exceptional witness to all these developments, being not foolhardy to predict that the dark old ages provide, as ever, foundations for stimulating new highlights and ideas.

This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 1122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long overlooked in standard reference works, pioneering women medievalists finally receive their due in Women Medievalists and the Academy. This comprehensive edited volume brings to life a diverse collection of inspiring figures through memoirs, biographical essays, and interviews. Covering many different nationalities and academic disciplines—including literature, philology, history, archaeology, art history, theology or religious studies, and philosophy—each essay delves into one woman’s life, intellectual contributions, and efforts to succeed in a male-dominated field. Together, these extraordinary personal histories constitute a new standard reference that speaks to a growing interest in women’s roles in the development of scholarship and the academy. The collection begins in the eighteenth century with Elizabeth Elstob and continues to the present, and includes—among more than seventy profiles—such important figures as Anna Jameson, Lina Eckenstein, Georgiana Goddard King, Eileen Power, Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Whitelock, Susan Mosher Stuard, Marcia Colish, and Caroline Walker Bynum, among others.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a shortened versión of my doctoral thesis which examines cultural words in Latin and their translation into Old English. To this end, a definition and classification of cultural words is offered and applied to the study of King Alfred’s translation of the ‘Consolidatio Philosophiae’. Alfred’s method of translation is explored in the light of the skopos theory and assessed in terms of adequacy to the socio-cultural and political context of 9th century Anglo-Saxon Wessex. Naturally, the initial format of the thesis has been made so as to facilitate reading for a more general public.
