Book excerpt: As the first biography of Professor Herman Daly, this book provides an in-depth account of one of the leading thinkers and most widely read writers on economics, environment and sustainability. Herman Daly’s economics for a full world, based on his steady-state economics, has been widely acknowledged through numerous prestigious international awards and prizes. Drawing on extensive interviews with Daly and in-depth analysis of his publications and debates, Peter Victor presents a unique insight into Daly’s life from childhood to the present day, describing his intellectual development, inspirations and influence. Much of the book is devoted to a comprehensive account of Daly’s foundational contributions to ecological economics. It describes how his insights and proposals have been received by economists and non-economists and the extraordinary relevance of Daly’s full world economics to solving the economic problems of today and tomorrow. Innovative and timely, this book will be of great interest to students, scholars, researchers, activists and policy makers concerned with economics, environment and sustainability.

Book Synopsis Optimal Economic Growth with Exhaustible Resources by : Prem C. Garg
Download or read book Optimal Economic Growth with Exhaustible Resources written by Prem C. Garg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979. For decades conservationists have argued that increasing population will eventually out-strip the limited natural resources of the earth. Economists have responded by saying that any resource scarcity will be forestalled by changes in tastes and technology, induced by the appropriate price signals. This study is an attempt to develop a theoretical framework for analysing some of the issues related to this debate. Using an optimal growth theory framework, the author analyses the problem of optimally allocating a finite stock of the resource over time. In the process the author points out the crucial parameters and value judgments relevant to the various issues. This title will be of interest to students of environmental economics.

Book Synopsis Monetary Policy and Financial Stability by : Ioanna T. Kokores
Download or read book Monetary Policy and Financial Stability written by Ioanna T. Kokores and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how monetary policy contributes to the efficient allocation of resources, with special reference made to the contribution of the effective workings of the financial system. It argues that the stability of the financial system promotes the smooth functioning of the payment systems and the effective transmission of monetary policy, thus promoting the achievement of monetary policy objectives. The interrelated issues addressed here include the ways various monetary policy objectives are achieved, their effective presentation to the public, and the strategic role of money growth in the conduct of monetary policy. The analysis underlines the context of financial-market performance in recent decades and the varied central bank responses to the emergence of the global financial crisis. This book constitutes a useful companion to graduate students in economics, researchers and business and central banking practitioners in understanding the unending quest of the shifting roles of money and financial practices to reconcile growth and stability.
Book Synopsis Small States in World Markets by : Peter J. Katzenstein
Download or read book Small States in World Markets written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the early 1980s the average American had a lower standard of living than the average Norwegian or Dane. Standards of living in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, and Austria also rivaled those in the United States. How have seven small democracies achieved economic success and what can they teach America? In Small States in World Markets, Peter Katzenstein examines the successes of these economically vulnerable nations of Western Europe, showing that they have managed to stay economically competitive while at the same time preserving their political institutions. Too dependent on world trade to impose protection, and lacking the resources to transform their domestic industries, they have found a third solution. Their rapid and flexible response to market opportunity stems from what Katzenstein calls "democratic corporatism," a mixture of ideological consensus, centralized politics, and complex bargains among politicians, merest groups, and bureaucrats. Democratic corporatism is the solution these nations have developed in response to the economic crises of the 1930s and 1940s, the liberal international economy established after World War II, and the volatile markets of more recent years. Katzenstein maintains that democratic corporatism is an effective way of coping with a rapidly changing world, a more effective way than the United States and several other large industrial countries have yet managed to discover.
