Download or read book Sculpture and Touch written by Peter Dent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Renaissance, at least, the medium of sculpture has been associated explicitly with the sense of touch. Sculptors, philosophers and art historians have all linked the two, often in strikingly different ways. In spite of this long running interest in touch and tactility, it is vision and visuality which have tended to dominate art historical research in recent decades. This book introduces a new impetus to the discussion of the relationship between touch and sculpture by setting up a dialogue between art historians and individuals with fresh insights who are working in disciplines beyond art history. The collection brings together a rich and diverse set of approaches, with essays tackling subjects from prehistoric figurines to the work of contemporary artists, from pre-modern ideas about the physiology of touch to tactile interaction in the museum environment, and from the phenomenology of touch in recent philosophy to the experimental findings of scientific study. It is the first volume on this subject to take such a broad approach and, as such, seeks to set the agenda for future research and collaboration in this area.

Book Synopsis Sense of Home by : William E. Reaves
Download or read book Sense of Home written by William E. Reaves and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2018 CASETA Publication Award, sponsored by the Center for Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art Richard Stout’s legacy as an artist is broad, deep, and firmly moored to his Texas Gulf Coast origins. Born in Beaumont in 1934, he has been painting, sculpting, and teaching in Houston since 1957, in the process creating both an influential body of work and a committed national and international following among artists and collectors. Stout’s expressionist oeuvre, possessing architectural structuralism with geometric precision, has found its place in prominent museum and private collections not only in Texas, but also nationally and internationally. His works have appeared in most major American exhibitions and have traveled to Europe, Australia, and Asia. In this, the first retrospective study of a career spanning one of the most tumultuous and formative periods in Texas art, the editors have gathered a critical examination and meticulously researched assessment of the evolution in the artist’s style and approach. Richly illustrated with representative paintings and sculptures from throughout Stout’s career, Sense of Home also provides a comprehensive biographical background, illuminating in multiple dimensions the life and work of one of Texas’ most significant contemporary artists.
Book Synopsis Paper Sculpture by : Richard Sweeney
Download or read book Paper Sculpture written by Richard Sweeney and published by Gingko Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper is a readily available and inexpensive sculptural media. Pliable, ephemeral and easily manipulated with simple tools, it is a medium with which the artist can form three-dimensional shapes quickly through precise folding and cutting. Richard Sweeney is a British artist and designer who has exhibited his extraordinary paper sculptures all over the world. His aim in Fluid Forms is to show how the basic principles of form-making in paper can be useful for artists, architects and fashion designers. Once mastered, these can then be expanded on and explored with the help of Sweeneys step-by-step analysis of the techniques he uses in the creation of his work. Sweeney leads you through the three stages of his process, from the initial conceptual stage (whether drawing on natural or architectural forms for inspiration), to the basic shapes (modular, in column, or dynamic), and finally to the folding techniques, curved folding, parallel pleating, faceted pleating and radiating pleating. The author also discusses tools and types of paper best suited for this art form.
Download or read book Manuel Neri written by Jock Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging publication examines the prodigious body of work of American sculptor Manuel Neri (b. 1930) through the unique perspective of one of Neri's former students. A near-contemporary of other notable California-based artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud, Neri is best known for his large-scale figurative sculptures that combine classical figuration with the dynamic mark-making of Abstract Expressionism. The book traces the compelling yet often contradictory thematic arcs of Neri's powerful work and his greater impact on the field of sculpture. At the heart of the publication are Jock Reynolds's personal reflections on Neri and his legacy as a teacher, adding insight and intimacy to the scholarly understanding of the artist. Photographs of Neri in his studio, archival images, and installation photos of the related exhibition at the Yale University Art Gallery round out the book. With its blend of art history and personal reflection, this unique book offers valuable insight into an important, understudied California artist.
