I'd produced literally hundreds of scripts and shot countless hours of programming. When I needed a break, I'd write Paper Heroes. After a while it became obvious where my attention needed to be focused, so I left television behind and jumped face-first into publishing. It's been a hell of an adventure, with plenty of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, this is where I need to be.Why did you choose to write a serious and compelling superhero book? I don't like easy answers. After reading comics since I was 9-years-old I found too many easy outs and not enough consequence. 'Paper Heroes' took all of the ideas I had about heroism, cynicism, and the hard choices we have to make in life and threw them together in one grounded story. I love when I find myself asking what I would do in a character's circumstances, how I might do things differently, and that's what I've done here. I want people to not only question Stewart Mitchell's choices, but question what they would do in his place. Would they risk everything or just go along for the ride? Those are the stories I love.Is 'Paper Heroes' just for superhero or comic book fans?No way. I wrote this story to be the antithesis of comic books and the rehashed stories we hear over and over again. Paper Heroes is for EVERYONE. If you love superheroes, you'll LOVE Paper Heroes. If you're sick of superheroes and want something new, you'll LOVE 'Paper Heroes.'Praise for 'Paper Heroes': "Unpredictable, great pacing, fantastic read!" - Z.C."The novel hooked me, I wanted to go on this journey with the characters." - M.J."Exciting, fast-paced twist on a super hero story!" - A.G

Book excerpt: Portraits and texts recover lost queer history: the lives of people who didn't conform to gender norms, from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. “A serious—and seriously successful—queer history recovery project.” —Publishers Weekly Katherina Hetzeldorfer, tried “for a crime that didn't have a name” (same sex sexual relations) and sentenced to death by drowning in 1477; Charles aka Mary Hamilton, publicly whipped for impersonating a man in eighteenth-century England; Clara, aka “Big Ben,” over whom two jealous women fought in 1926 New York: these are just three of the lives that the artist Ria Brodell has reclaimed for queer history in Butch Heroes. Brodell offers a series of twenty-eight portraits of forgotten but heroic figures, each accompanied by a brief biographical note. They are individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced dire punishment for being themselves. Brodell's detailed and witty paintings are modeled on Catholic holy cards, slyly subverting a religious template. The portraits and the texts offer intriguing hints of lost lives: cats lounge in the background of domestic settings; one of the figures is said to have been employed variously as “a prophet, a soldier, or a textile worker”; another casually holds a lit cigarette. Brodell did extensive research for each portrait, piecing together a life from historical accounts, maps, journals, paintings, drawings, and photographs, finding the heroic in the forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Watchman didn't arrive in a Batmobile but drove a tan, four-door Pontiac. He was in costume, of course—a trench coat, motorcycle gloves, army boots, a domino mask, and a red hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with a W logo. Journalist Tea Krulos had spoken to him over the phone but never face-to-mask. By the end of the interview, he wasn't sure if the Watchman was delightfully eccentric or completely crazy. But he was going to find out. Heroes in the Night traces Krulos's journey into the strange subculture of Real Life Superheroes, random citizens who have adopted comic book&–style personas and hit the streets to fight injustice. Some concentrate on humanitarian or activist missions—helping the homeless, gathering donations for food banks, or delivering toys to children—while others actively patrol their neighborhoods looking for crime to fight. By day, these modern Clark Kents work as dishwashers, pencil pushers, and executives in Fortune 500 companies. But by night, only the Shadow knows. Well, the Shadow and Tea Krulos. Through historical research, extensive interviews, and many long hours walking patrol in Brooklyn, Seattle, San Diego, Minneapolis, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Krulos discovered what being a RLSH is all about. He shares not only their shining, triumphant moments but some of their ill-advised, terrifying disasters as well. It's all part of the life of a superhero. As the Watchman explains, &“If everyone made little changes in what they did, gave a little more to charity, watched out for their neighbors, we wouldn't have the problems that we have.&”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where Have All the Heroes Gone? provides an analysis of heroism's application and meaning among political and media elites, as well as the mass public over the past fifty years. In asking "what has happened" to American heroes over this span, it explores how heroes are used strategically by governing officials and providers of media content in ways that are frequently divergent from and even directly opposed to popular expectations.
