This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: This volume is dedicated to the remarkable career of Professor Peter Schmidt and the role he has played in mentoring us, his PhD students. Peter’s accomplishments are legendary among his students and the profession. Each of the papers in this Festschrift is a research work executed by a former PhD student of Peter’s, from his days at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to his time at Michigan State University. Most of the papers were presented at The Conference in Honor of Peter Schmidt, June 30 - July 2, 2011. The conference was largely attended by his former students and one current student, who traveled from as far as Europe and Asia to honor Peter. This was a conference to celebrate Peter’s contribution to our contributions. By “our contributions” we mean the research papers that make up this Festschrift and the countless other publications by his students represented and not represented in this volume. Peter’s students may have their families to thank for much that is positive in their lives. However, if we think about it, our professional lives would not be the same without the lessons and the approaches to decision making that we learned from Peter. We spent our days together at Peter’s conference and the months since reminded of these aspects of our personalities and life goals that were enhanced, fostered, and nurtured by the very singular experiences we have had as Peter’s students. We recognized in 2011 that it was unlikely we would all be together again to celebrate such a wonderful moment in ours and Peter’s lives and pledged then to take full advantage of it. We did then, and we are now in the form of this volume.

Book Synopsis Geography, Structural Change and Economic Development by : Neri Salvadori
Download or read book Geography, Structural Change and Economic Development written by Neri Salvadori and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors in this book regard the process of economic expansion as a non-homogeneous and multifaceted phenomenon which has deeply affected human welfare, and cultural, social and political change. The book is a bridge between the theorists (Rosenstein-Rodan, Lewis, Myrdal, and Hirschmann) who in the post-war period analyzed regional inequalities, structural change and dualism, and the modern literature on economic growth. The latter has emphasized the existence of multiple equilibria, bifurcations and various types of dynamic complexity, and clarified the conditions for the emergence of phenomena such as cumulative causation, path dependence and hysteresis. These are the typical ingredients of structural change, economic development or underdevelopment.

Book excerpt: The electricity sector's reforms aim to modernise its infrastructure, rules, policies, and procedures to allow for more efficiency and for clean energy to have the same playing field in the power competition/wholesale/retail electricity market. This will enable inefficient power to be phased out gradually. Over the past 2 decades, there has been remarkable progress in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) electricity markets that has increased the electrification ratio substantially; however, it has not achieved free market competition, universal electrification, and emission reduction plans. ASEAN aims to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030.Electricity Market Reforms in ASEAN, China, India, and Japan provides 10 empirical studies investigating and evaluating the electricity market reforms in Southeast Asia, China, India, and Japan. The book analyses the electricity market policy reform plans, market liberalisation, tariff reform, electricity trade, renewable energy integration, resource allocation, and the sustainability of the electricity market in the region and these countries. It provides policy recommendations to foster the reforms and increase market efficiency.

Book Synopsis The Cointegrated VAR Model by : Katarina Juselius
Download or read book The Cointegrated VAR Model written by Katarina Juselius and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-12-07 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable text provides a comprehensive introduction to VAR modelling and how it can be applied. In particular, the author focuses on the properties of the Cointegrated VAR model and its implications for macroeconomic inference when data are non-stationary. The text provides a number of insights into the links between statistical econometric modelling and economic theory and gives a thorough treatment of identification of the long-run and short-run structure as well as of the common stochastic trends and the impulse response functions, providing in each case illustrations of applicability. This book presents the main ingredients of the Copenhagen School of Time-Series Econometrics in a transparent and coherent framework. The distinguishing feature of this school is that econometric theory and applications have been developed in close cooperation. The guiding principle is that good econometric work should take econometrics, institutions, and economics seriously. The author uses a single data set throughout most of the book to guide the reader through the econometric theory while also revealing the full implications for the underlying economic model. To test ensure full understanding the book concludes with the introduction of two new data sets to combine readers understanding of econometric theory and economic models, with economic reality.

Book Synopsis Crowding-Out or Crowding-In? Public and Private Investment in India by : Girish Bahal
Download or read book Crowding-Out or Crowding-In? Public and Private Investment in India written by Girish Bahal and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper contributes to the debate on the relationship between public-capital accumulation and private investment in India along the following dimensions. First, acknowledging major structural changes that the Indian economy has undergone in the past three decades, we study whether public investment in recent years has become more or less complementary to private investment in comparison to the period before 1980. Second, we construct a novel data-set of quarterly aggregate public and private investment in India over the period 1996Q2-2015Q1 using investment-project data from the CapEx-CMIE database. Third, embedding a theory-driven long-run relationship on the model, we estimate a range of Structural Vector Error Correction Models (SVECMs) to re-examine the public and private investment relationship in India. Identification is achieved by decomposing shocks into those with transitory and permanent effects. Our results suggest that while public-capital accumulation crowds out private investment in India over 1950-2012, the opposite is true when we restrict the sample post 1980 or conduct a quarterly analysis since 1996Q2. This change can most likely be attributed to the policy reforms which started during early 1980s and gained momentum after the 1991 crises.
Book Synopsis Time Series Analysis by : Katsuto Tanaka
Download or read book Time Series Analysis written by Katsuto Tanaka and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 1139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflects the developments and new directions in the field since the publication of the first successful edition and contains a complete set of problems and solutions This revised and expanded edition reflects the developments and new directions in the field since the publication of the first edition. In particular, sections on nonstationary panel data analysis and a discussion on the distinction between deterministic and stochastic trends have been added. Three new chapters on long-memory discrete-time and continuous-time processes have also been created, whereas some chapters have been merged and some sections deleted. The first eleven chapters of the first edition have been compressed into ten chapters, with a chapter on nonstationary panel added and located under Part I: Analysis of Non-fractional Time Series. Chapters 12 to 14 have been newly written under Part II: Analysis of Fractional Time Series. Chapter 12 discusses the basic theory of long-memory processes by introducing ARFIMA models and the fractional Brownian motion (fBm). Chapter 13 is concerned with the computation of distributions of quadratic functionals of the fBm and its ratio. Next, Chapter 14 introduces the fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, on which the statistical inference is discussed. Finally, Chapter 15 gives a complete set of solutions to problems posed at the end of most sections. This new edition features: • Sections to discuss nonstationary panel data analysis, the problem of differentiating between deterministic and stochastic trends, and nonstationary processes of local deviations from a unit root • Consideration of the maximum likelihood estimator of the drift parameter, as well as asymptotics as the sampling span increases • Discussions on not only nonstationary but also noninvertible time series from a theoretical viewpoint • New topics such as the computation of limiting local powers of panel unit root tests, the derivation of the fractional unit root distribution, and unit root tests under the fBm error Time Series Analysis: Nonstationary and Noninvertible Distribution Theory, Second Edition, is a reference for graduate students in econometrics or time series analysis. Katsuto Tanaka, PhD, is a professor in the Faculty of Economics at Gakushuin University and was previously a professor at Hitotsubashi University. He is a recipient of the Tjalling C. Koopmans Econometric Theory Prize (1996), the Japan Statistical Society Prize (1998), and the Econometric Theory Award (1999). Aside from the first edition of Time Series Analysis (Wiley, 1996), Dr. Tanaka had published five econometrics and statistics books in Japanese.
