Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of nearly 200 pieces of printed ephemera, most of which is completed in manuscript, and more than 900 paper wrappers annotated with manuscript titles, all of which were produced during the French Revolution in the late 18th century and the early years of the Napoleonic era. Most of the ephemera were created or issued by the newly formed national, provincial, and municipal government bodies and institutions during France's transition from a monarchy to the French Republic. These primary sources shed light on political, military, economic, and social aspects of the French Revolution. Among the government documents are official communications of the Convention nationale, the constitutional congress of the French First Republic, and its committees; Directoire of Montauban; a variety of provincial government bodies; and municipal bodies of Paris. The provincial documents include several administrative documents with the signatures of key government officials for use in verifying the authenticity of official communications. The Paris documents include many emanating from the revolutionary sections of Paris, which arose in the early days of the French Revolution in 1790 and were suppressed in 1795. Financial documents include paper currency (mostly assignats issued during the Revolution); documents covering the requisition, either willingly or forced, of goods and funds for the revolutionary war effort; and annoucements of the sale of assets siezed from émigrés from Isère, mainly artistocrats and royalist sympathizers who fled the country during the Revolution. Among the military records are military commissions, orders, and discharge papers. Personal identification documents include those allowing passage (similar to passports), those confirming residency, and "cartes de sureté." Several documents relate to the Constitution civile du clergé and the loyaly oath to the state that the revolutionary government required clergy to take after the government seized control of the Catholic Church in France. Other ephemera in the collection include shipping records, mostly bills of lading, for ships departing from and arriving to French ports. A majority of the collection consists of contemporary paper wrappers, many of which are repurposed from printed waste. They bear the manuscript title and date of laws, decrees, and other government documents. These wrappers may have been folded around those published pamphlets by a former owner and later removed. These materials form part of the French Revolution Collection, which consists primarily of more than 30,000 pamphlets and broadsides and 180 periodical titles acquired by the Newberry Library in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The pamphlets, broadsides, and periodicals are cataloged individually.

Covering the period between Louis XIV's death in 1715 and the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, it discusses: * France's accomplishments in international affairs, commercial expansion, and intellectual and artistic life * the significance of long-term political, social and economic forces in causing the Revolution * how the changing perception of government, from one of divine-right kingship towards the idea of a national enterprise, ultimately undermined the old regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 115,000 priests on French territory in 1789 belonged to an evolving tradition of priesthood. The challenge of making sense of the Christian tradition can be formidable in any era, but this was especially true for those priests required at the very beginning of 1791 to take an oath of loyalty to the new government—and thereby accept the religious reforms promoted in a new Civil Constitution of the Clergy. More than half did so at the beginning, and those who were subsequently consecrated bishops became the new official hierarchy of France. In Priests of the French Revolution, Joseph Byrnes shows how these priests and bishops who embraced the Revolution creatively followed or destructively rejected traditional versions of priestly ministry. Their writings, public testimony, and recorded private confidences furnish the story of a national Catholic church. This is a history of the religious attitudes and psychological experiences underpinning the behavior of representative bishops and priests. Byrnes plays individual ideologies against group action, and religious teachings against political action, to produce a balanced story of saints and renegades within a Catholic tradition.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Louis Gottschalk Prize, American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies A Financial Times Best History Book of the Year A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year Rebecca L. Spang, who revolutionized our understanding of the restaurant, has written a new history of money. It uses one of the most infamous examples of monetary innovation, the assignats—a currency initially defined by French revolutionaries as “circulating land”—to demonstrate that money is as much a social and political mediator as it is an economic instrument. Following the assignats from creation to abandonment, Spang shows them to be subject to the same slippages between policies and practice, intentions and outcomes, as other human inventions. “This is a quite brilliant, assertive book.” —Patrice Higonnet, Times Literary Supplement “Brilliant...What [Spang] proposes is nothing less than a new conceptualization of the revolution...She has provided historians—and not just those of France or the French Revolution—with a new set of lenses with which to view the past.” —Arthur Goldhammer, Bookforum “[Spang] views the French Revolution from rewardingly new angles by analyzing the cultural significance of money in the turbulent years of European war, domestic terror and inflation.” —Tony Barber, Financial Times

Book excerpt: From an award-winning historian, a “vivid” (Wall Street Journal) account of the revolution that created the modern world The French Revolution’s principles of liberty and equality still shape our ideas of a just society—even if, after more than two hundred years, their meaning is more contested than ever before. In A New World Begins, Jeremy D. Popkin offers a riveting account of the revolution that puts the reader in the thick of the debates and the violence that led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a new society. We meet Mirabeau, Robespierre, and Danton, in all their brilliance and vengefulness; we witness the failed escape and execution of Louis XVI; we see women demanding equal rights and Black slaves wresting freedom from revolutionaries who hesitated to act on their own principles; and we follow the rise of Napoleon out of the ashes of the Reign of Terror. Based on decades of scholarship, A New World Begins will stand as the definitive treatment of the French Revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is the Third Estate? was the most influential pamphlet of 1789. It did much to set the French Revolution on a radically democratic course. It also launched its author, the Abbé Sieyes, on a remarkable political career that spanned the entire revolutionary decade. Sieyes both opened the revolution by authoring the National Assembly's declaration of sovereignty in June of 1789 and closed it in 1799 by engineering Napoleon Bonaparte's coup d'état. This book studies the powerful rhetoric of the great pamphlet and the brilliant but enigmatic thought of its author. William H. Sewell's insightful analysis reveals the fundamental role played by the new discourse of political economy in Sieyes's thought and uncovers the strategies by which this gifted rhetorician gained the assent of his intended readers--educated and prosperous bourgeois who felt excluded by the nobility in the hierarchical social order of the old regime. He also probes the contradictions and incoherencies of the pamphlet's highly polished text to reveal fissures that reach to the core of Sieyes's thought--and to the core of the revolutionary project itself. Combining techniques of intellectual history and literary analysis with a deep understanding of French social and political history, Sewell not only fashions an illuminating portrait of a crucial political document, but outlines a fresh perspective on the history of revolutionary political culture.
