It is a major oil palm planter in Malaysia. While there are books written on the ecological and economical aspects of the oil palm industry, there is no book written specifically on the treatment processes of palm oil mill effluent. This book is written based on a year study case in a medium-sized palm oil mill in the northern region of Sabah. It is written in the simplest way of expression and accompanied by many photos and diagrams to ease understanding. Discussions include treatment processes that occurred in the pre-, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment stages. Readers will find it to be a useful reference especially university students.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, scientific insight into the chemistry of water has increased enormously, leading to the development of advanced wastewater and water purification technologies. However, the quality of freshwater resources has continually deteriorated worldwide, both in industrialized and developing countries. Although traditional wastewater technologies focus on the removal of suspended solids, nutrients and bacteria, hundreds of organic pollutants occur in wastewater and urban surface waters. These new pollutants are synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals that are not often monitored in the environment but have the potential to enter the environment and cause known or suspected adverse ecological and / or human health effects. Collectively referred to as the "emerging contaminants," they are mostly derived from domestic use and occur in trace concentrations ranging from pico to micrograms per liter. Environmental contaminants are resistant to conventional wastewater treatment processes and most of them remain unaffected, leading to the contamination of the receiving water. As such, there is a need for advanced wastewater treatment process that is capable of removing environmental contaminants to ensure safe fresh water supplies. This book explains the biological and chemical wastewater treatment technologies. The biological wastewater treatment processes presented include: (1) bioremediation of wastewater such as aerobic and anaerobic treatment; (2) phytoremediation of wastewater using engineered wetlands, rhizofiltration, rhizodegradation, phytodegradation, phytoaccumulation, phytotransformation and hyperaccumulators; and (3) mycoremediation of wastewater. The chemical wastewater treatment processes discussed include chemical precipitation, ion exchange, neutralization, adsorption and disinfection. In addition, the book describes wastewater treatment plants in terms of plant size, layout and design as well as installation location. Also presenting the latest, innovative effluent water treatment processes, it is a valuable resource for biochemical and wastewater treatment engineers, environmental scientists and environmental microbiologists.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is the highest single polluter of Malaysian rivers. The Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD, 3-day,30o c) content of the effluent ranges from 20000-30000 p.p.m., which is about 50-60 times stronger than the domestic sewage. The Malaysian Government, the industry and the people of Malaysia in general are very concerned about the pollution problems caused by the palm oil industry. Dominion Square Sdn. Bhd (DSSB) is one of the player involve in the production of crude palm oil from fresh fruit bunch. This research will enhance the reduction process of DSSB wastewater treatment plant so the discharge will meet the regulation standard by Department of Environmental (DOE) of Malaysia. The objective of this research are to accelerate current treatment method of POME by decreasing the time consume and cost of treatment. The best loading of chemical to the pond and optimum condition of the microbiological activity studied in order to provide best place for the reduction process. The research carried out onsite and inside the laboratory to obtain the reading of temperature, pH and biological oxygen demand (BOD) for each sample. From the result, the best loading of the chemical NK-8 is at 25kg with reduction of BOD was 340.5 mg/l. The optimum pH for the biological activity was 6.5 to 7.5 while the best temperature was 45oc-55oc. Clear water and recycle path should be preserve for best performance of biological activity. As the conclusion, the best condition of the POME reduction has been successfully obtained for DSSB plant so that the cost of the wastewater treatment plant can be reduce at the same time the still comply with the discharge standard by DOE.

This book provides, for the first time, in-depth and integrated coverage of the functions of sulfur in phototrophic organisms including bacteria, plants and algae. It bridges gaps between biochemistry and cellular biology of sulfur in these organisms, and of biology and environments dominated by them. The book therefore provides a comprehensive overview of plant sulfur relations from genome to environment.

Book excerpt: Integrated Wastewater Management and Valorization using Algal Cultures provides a holistic view on coupled wastewater treatment and biomass production for energy and value-added products using algal cultures. Algal cultures provide low-cost nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) treatment and recovery from wastewaters, carbon-dioxide sequestration from waste gases, value-added generation in the form of bio-energy and bio-based chemicals, biosorption of heavy metals and biogas upgrading. The book addresses all these aspects in terms of role of algal cultures in environmental sustainability and circular economy. The production of high value products is addressed through pretreatment and anaerobic co-digestion of wastewater-derived microalgal biomass and microalgal biorefineries. The simultaneous dissolution and uptake of nutrients in microalgal treatment of anaerobic digestate is discussed, as is coupled electrocoagulation and algal cultivation for the treatment of anaerobic digestate and algal biomass production. Finally, optimization of algal biomass production is discussed using metagenomics and machine learning tools, and scale-up potential and the limitations of integrated wastewater-derived microalgal biorefineries is discussed. Integrated Wastewater Management and Valorization using Algal Cultures offers an integrated resource on wastewater treatment, biomass production, bioenergy and value-added product generation for researchers in bioenergy and renewable energy, environmental science and wastewater treatment, as well as environmental and chemical engineering. - Comprehensively covers methods of wastewater treatment by algal cultivation and algal utilization - Integrates the applications of algal cultures across wastewater treatment, nutrient recycling, CO2 sequestration, bio-energy and bio-based product generation - Provides several international case studies to showcase actual algae-based pilot projects and facilities
