Book excerpt: This outstanding book offers a standardized typology and chronology for the pottery of the Jerusalem area from c. 200 to 800 CE with an emphasis on the fourth to seventh centuries. It begins with a review of the stratigraphy and ceramic assemblages of the relevant published sites: the City of David, the north wall of Jerusalem, the Damascus Gate, Bethany, the Armenian Garden and Ramat Rahel. Also presented is previously unpublished late Roman and Byzantine pottery from Avigad's excavations in the Jewish Quarter with a discussion of some of the ceramic types most characteristic of the Jerusalem area during the late Roman, Byzantine and early periods. The last part of the book is a corpus that sets forth a typology for the pottery of Jerusalem from c. 200 to 800CE with dates and lists of parallels provided for each type.

Book excerpt: "'Palestinian Traditional Pottery' stands out, first and foremost, as a scholarly testimony to the disappeared and disappearing craft of traditional pottery making by Palestinian women and men potters. It offers a contribution that has been long awaited and is long overdue. The material it provides, both textual and pictorial, is based on field research completed in the 1970s by two very different, yet complementary, researchers and authors. For various reasons, this material lay dormant over four decades until it was retrieved and returned to the light of day. The occasion for the creation of the volume was the death in 2017 in the U.S. of one of the authors, John Landgraf. Fortunately, the other author, Owen Rye in Australia, had most of the written material still in his possession, which was then digitized, arranged, and edited. The graphic material, especially the black and white - and beautiful color - photographs, taken by the two authors, was also gathered and cataloged for use in the book. The photographs of the women potters are particularly poignant, since they date to the final decade of their pottery making activity. Assembling and producing the book required months of painstaking collaborative work by the editors and the layout artist, with results that are worthy of their efforts. This volume invites readers into the two distinct worlds of Palestinian women and men potters at work in the 1970s: the women in or outside their village homes, and the men in their mostly urban workshops. With Palestinian culture under siege, the scholarship presented here aims to record and preserve a key part of that culture. It stands out equally as a memorial volume for John Landgraf, who lived in Jerusalem from 1965 to 1980, dedicating himself to archaeology, ethnography, and social work." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient site of Colossae in south-west Turkey has been sorely neglected by archaeologists and biblical commentators. It has never been excavated. Modern scholarship in general has been content to repeat nineteenth century assessments, especially those of J.B. Lightfoot and W.M. Ramsay. This is the first modern contribution to gather the archaeological, historical, classical and biblical materials related to the site and its region, some of which is published in English for the first time. It marks a major step forward in scholarship on Colossae, and is designed to restore Colossae to time and space, to its material and comparative significance. Colossae emerges as a site of uninterrupted human activity in dynamic interaction with its neighbours from before the Achaemenid period to beyond the end of Byzantine control. Evidence of a chalcolithic origin of Colossae is presented along with an assessment of the relationship of the site to the modern city of Honaz. An array of international scholars have brought their specialisations in various periods and disciplines to yield a radically new assessment of the history and importance of the site. All future scholarship will be able to use this volume as the necessary foundation for research. The volume includes the first chronology of the ancient site and the first English translation of the key Byzantine text centred on the ancient city, as well as major new insights into the text of the Epistle to the Colossians.
