Book excerpt: The most isolated archipelago on the west coast of the Americas, inhabited for at least 10,500 years, Haida Gwaii has fascinated scientists, social scientists, historians, and inquisitive travellers for decades. This book brings together the results of extensive and varied field research by both federal agencies and independent researchers, and carefully integrates them with earlier archaeological, ethnohistorical, and paleoenvironmental work in the region. It imparts significant new information about the natural history of Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, and the adjacent areas of Hecate Strait. Chapters analyze new data on ice retreat, shoreline and sea level change, faunal communities, and culture history, providing a more comprehensive picture of the history of the islands from the late glacial through the prehistoric period, to the time of European contact, known to the Haida as the "time of the Iron People."

Book excerpt: The Upper Triassic sections outcropping on the Queen Charlotte Islands contain outstanding successions of conodont and radiolarian microfossils. This report focuses on the successions about the Carnian-Norian boundary at several key localities. This boundary may coincide with an interval of significant change in global fauna and flora, particularly in terrestrial habitats. The purpose of the study reported is to demonstrate faunal change that may potentially be used in global correlation and definition of the Carnian-Norian boundary, and thus contribute towards the resolution of historical events that date from that time. The report summarizes the radiolarian change within the boundary interval identified primarily by conodonts but supplemented by some molluscan data.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allow yourself to be taken back into deep geologic time when strange creatures roamed the Earth and Western North America looked completely unlike the modern landscape. Volcanic islands stretched from Mexico to Alaska, most of the Pacific Rim didn’t exist yet, at least not as widespread dry land; terranes drifted from across the Pacific to dock on Western Americas’ shores creating mountains and more volcanic activity. Landscapes were transposed north or south by thousands of kilometers along huge fault systems. Follow these events through paleogeographic maps that look like satellite views of ancient Earth. Accompanying text takes the reader into the science behind these maps and the geologic history that they portray. The maps and text unfold the complex geologic history of the region as never seen before. Winner of the 2021 John D. Haun Landmark Publication Award, AAPG-Rocky Mountain Section

Book excerpt: Extensive geological investigation of Mesozoic strata of the Pacific Rim is currently underway to determine the hydrocarbon potential of these rocks. Precise biostratigraphic control is essential for advances and substantial new information on the Jurassic biostratigraphy and taxonomy of Jurassic radiolarians from the Queen Charlotte Islands is presented in this report. Five new genera and 42 new species are described, most of which have restricted, and therefore useful, biostratigraphic ranges. A preliminary radiolarian zonation is proposed, calibrated with associated ammonite and foraminiferal faunas.

Book excerpt: Developing the evolutionary history and classification in the planktic foraminifera of the Late Cretaceous age also led to the proliferation of taxa names and an unprecedented expansion in terminology. This new data is spread out over several tens of articles published in international journals and books. Handbook of Late Cretaceous Planktic Foraminifera (Practical Classification, Biostratigraphy) brings a variety of this data into the practical field in a ready-to-use form. The species and genera of all the Cretaceous planktic foraminiferal groups are described and illustrated, and additional readings are recommended. Each species is dedicated to one of the 237 plates illustrated with high-quality scanning, electron microscope photographs. The large-sized illustrations are designed to allow the reader to connect quickly with the gross test architecture data with those pertaining to the wall ultrastructure, ornamentation, porosity and high detail morphological features of the test. Fossil material was collected from a variety of localities worldwide, but most of them are from sites in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. With higher than 95% of estimated coverage, the handbook is designed as a useful identification tool for a variety of professionals interested in using the Late Cretaceous planktic foraminifera. Revised stratigraphical ranges for all the 237 species are given in a chart calibrated on the classical Cretaceous Stage/Age scale in which the species are ordered by genus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human settlement has often centered around coastal areas and waterways. Until recently, however, archaeologists believed that marine economies did not develop until the end of the Pleistocene, when the archaeological record begins to have evidence of marine life as part of the human diet. This has long been interpreted as a postglacial adaptation, due to the rise in sea level and subsequent decrease in terrestrial resources. Coastal resources, particularly mollusks, were viewed as fallback resources, which people resorted to only when terrestrial resources were scarce, included only as part of a more complex diet. Recent research has significantly altered this understanding, known as the Broad Spectrum Revolution (BSR) model. The contributions to this volume revise the BSR model, with evidence that coastal resources were an important part of human economies and subsistence much earlier than previously thought, and even the main focus of diets for some Pleistocene and early Holocene hunter-gatherer societies. With evidence from North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, this volume comprehensively lends a new understanding to coastal settlement from the Middle Paleolithic to the Middle Holocene.

Exploring environmental changes through Earth’s geological history using chemostratigraphy Chemostratigraphy is the study of the chemical characteristics of different rock layers. Decoding this geochemical record across chronostratigraphic boundaries can provide insights into geological history, past climates, and sedimentary processes. Chemostratigraphy Across Major Chronological Boundaries presents state-of-the-art applications of chemostratigraphic methods and demonstrates how chemical signatures can decipher past environmental conditions. Volume highlights include: Presents a global perspective on chronostratigraphic boundaries Describes how different proxies can reveal distinct elemental and isotopic events in the geologic past Examines the Archaean-Paleoproterozoic, Proterozoic-Paleozoic, Paleozoic-Mesozoic, and Mesozoic-Paleogene boundaries Explores cause-and-effect through major, trace, PGE, and REE elemental, stable, and radiogenic isotopes Offers solutions to persistent chemostratigraphic problems on a micro-global scale Geared toward academic and researchgeoscientists, particularly in the fields of sedimentary petrology, stratigraphy, isotope geology, geochemistry, petroleum geology, atmospheric science, oceanography, climate change and environmental science, Chemostratigraphy Across Major Chronological Boundaries offers invaluable insights into environmental evolution and climatic change.
