Book Synopsis Climate and Cultural Change in Prehistoric Europe and the Near East by : Peter F. Biehl
Download or read book Climate and Cultural Change in Prehistoric Europe and the Near East written by Peter F. Biehl and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich case studies examining responses to climatic events in ancient Europe and the Near East. The subject of climate change could hardly be more timely. In Climate and Cultural Change in Prehistoric Europe and the Near East, an interdisciplinary group of contributors examine climate change through the lens of new archaeological and paleo-environmental data over the course of more than 10,000 years from the Near East to Europe. Key climatic and other events are contextualized with cultural changes and transitions for which the authors discuss when, how, and if, changes in climate and environment caused people to adapt, move or perish. More than this publication of crucial archaeological and paleo-environmental data, however, the volume seeks to understand the social, political and economic significance of climate change as it was manifested in various ways around the Old World. Contrary to perceptions of threatening global warming in our popular media, and in contrast to grim images of collapse presented in some archaeological discussions of past climate change, this book rejects outright societal collapse as a likely outcome. Yet this does not keep the authors from considering climate change as a potential factor in explaining culture change by adopting a critical stance with regard to the long-standing practice of equating synchronicity with causality, and explicitly considering alternative explanations.

Book Synopsis Chert Availability and Prehistoric Exploitation in the Near East by : Christophe Delage
Download or read book Chert Availability and Prehistoric Exploitation in the Near East written by Christophe Delage and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2007 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective volume offers a variety of perspectives which come together to offer a comprehensive picture of chert procurement and exploitation in Prehistory in the Near East and the Levant. The contributions include geoarchaeological and geological surveys, mapping chert sources and quarry sites, placed in the broader context of lithic resources and exploitation in the region; case studies of specific sites; and the characterization of chert samples and archaeological finds through macroscopic, mineralogical and petrographic analysis. They also offer studies of the raw material selection and chaîne opératoire involved in lithic production using siliceous rocks, offering insights into the development of lithic technology and tool use in the region, from the earliest evidence through to the role of flint and chert in the technological and economic systems of Neolithic farming communities.
Book Synopsis Quaternary of the Levant by : Yehouda Enzel
Download or read book Quaternary of the Levant written by Yehouda Enzel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quaternary of the Levant presents up-to-date research achievements from a region that displays unique interactions between the climate, the environment and human evolution. Focusing on southeast Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel, it brings together over eighty contributions from leading researchers to review 2.5 million years of environmental change and human cultural evolution. Information from prehistoric sites and palaeoanthropological studies contributing to our understanding of 'out of Africa' migrations, Neanderthals, cultures of modern humans, and the origins of agriculture are assessed within the context of glacial-interglacial cycles, marine isotope cycles, plate tectonics, geochronology, geomorphology, palaeoecology and genetics. Complemented by overview summaries that draw together the findings of each chapter, the resulting coverage is wide-ranging and cohesive. The cross-disciplinary nature of the volume makes it an invaluable resource for academics and advanced students of Quaternary science and human prehistory, as well as being an important reference for archaeologists working in the region.
Book Synopsis Near Eastern Upper Palaeolithic cultural stratigraphy by : Daniel Schyle
Download or read book Near Eastern Upper Palaeolithic cultural stratigraphy written by Daniel Schyle and published by Dr Ludwig Reichert. This book was released on 1992 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Life on the Edge written by Geraint Coles and published by Symposia of the Association fo. This book was released on 1998 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history some areas have been less attractive for living and farming than others. These areas are identified as marginal because of environmental, economic or socio-political factors. How can we recognise marginality in the archaeological record? How particularly can environmental remains be interpreted? And how can we interpret human strategies when faced with a marginal environment? Most of the papers in this volume focus on Scottish contexts, reflecting their origins at the 1992 meeting of the Association for Environmental Archaeology in Edinburgh. However Greek pastoralism and the problems of food supply in the Egyptian and Syrian deserts are also examined.

Book Synopsis Projectile Technology by : Heidi Knecht
Download or read book Projectile Technology written by Heidi Knecht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artifacts linked to projectile technologies traditionally have provided the foundations for time-space systematics and cultural-historic frameworks in archaeological research having to do with foragers. With the shift in archae ological research objectives to processual interpretations, projectile technolo gies continue to receive marked attention, but with an emphasis on the implications of variability in such areas as design, function, and material as they relate to the broader questions of human adaptation. The reason that this particular domain of foraging technology persists as an important focus of research, I think, comes in three parts. A projectile technology was a crucial part of most foragers' strategies for survival, it was functionally spe cific, and it generally was fabricated from durable materials likely to be detected archaeologically. Being fundamental to meat acquisition and the principal source of calo ries, projectile technologies were typically afforded greater time-investment, formal modification, and elaboration of attributes than others. Moreover, such technologies tend to display greater standardization because of con straints on size, morphology, and weight that are inherent to the delivery system. The elaboration of attributes and standardization of form gives pro jectile technologies time-and space-sensitivity that is greater than most other foraging technologies. And such sensitivity is immensely valuable in archae ological research.
