Book Synopsis Life on the Edge by : Jim Al-Khalili
Download or read book Life on the Edge written by Jim Al-Khalili and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is the most extraordinary phenomenon in the known universe; but how does it work? Even in this age of cloning and synthetic biology, the remarkable truth remains: nobody has ever made anything living entirely out of dead material. Life remains the only way to make life. Are we missing a vital ingredient in its creation? Like Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene, which provided a new perspective on evolution, Life on the Edge alters our understanding of life's dynamics as Jim Al-Khalili and Johnjoe Macfadden reveal the hitherto missing ingredient to be quantum mechanics. Drawing on recent ground-breaking experiments around the world, they show how photosynthesis relies on subatomic particles existing in many places at once, while inside enzymes, those workhorses of life that make every molecule within our cells, particles vanish from one point in space and instantly materialize in another. Each chapter in Life on the Edge opens with an engaging example that illustrates one of life’s puzzles – How do migrating birds know where to go? How do we really smell the scent of a rose? How do our genes manage to copy themselves with such precision? – and then reveals how quantum mechanics delivers its answer. Guiding the reader through the maze of rapidly unfolding discovery, Al-Khalili and McFadden communicate vividly the excitement of this explosive new field of quantum biology, with its potentially revolutionary applications, and also offer insights into the biggest puzzle of all: what is life?
Book Synopsis Life on the Edge by : Stephany Francisca
Download or read book Life on the Edge written by Stephany Francisca and published by Inspiring Voices. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Life on the Edge, author Stephany Francisca chronicles her path to finding a formula for a true life that has enabled her to meet and exceed her own objectives. As she recounts her personal memories and experiences from childhood to adulthood, she synthesizes the patterns that she followed to accomplish her life goals. To her, the pattern is clear: You do because you don't know better (ages 4-5). You do because you want to change the undesired outcome to a desired one (ages 6-10). You dare yourself to do more and push your boundaries each time you succeed (ages 14-15). You keep daring but with pre-damage control you take bigger risks (ages 19-22). Author Francisca definitely took the road less traveled as she challenged everything from eating broccoli at six to being allowed to live on her own at fifteen. She talks about the challenges of fighting conventional wisdom, and of determining her own fate as opposed to letting her fate be dictated by others. Life on the Edge is about following your dreams and living life to the fullest--on your own terms--by creating your own path in life and then following it
Book Synopsis Life on the Edge by : Brother John of Taize
Download or read book Life on the Edge written by Brother John of Taize and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Christian faith something that can peacefully exist alongside all the other aspects of an ordinary human life, or does it by its very nature turn that life into something else? The author of this book, a member of a monastic community for over forty years, obviously has a vested interest in the answer. But even for believers caught up in the day-to-day life of society, work, and family, the question is an important one, at least if they are seeking a measure of consistency in the life they are living. And does not the very fact that the question of the importance and urgency of faith needs to be asked witness to the eclipse of an eschatological outlook among Christians, at any rate in the mainstream Churches? Could this oversight not explain why an eschatological understanding of faith, one which sees it as a radical, world-changing reality, has been forced to take refuge, often deformed to the point of being unrecognizable, in small “fanatical” groups on the margins of the Christian world?

Download or read book Life On The Edge written by Michael Gross and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2008-01-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can life exist in the Antarctic ice, in the deep subsurface, in dilute sulfuric acid, in hot springs-even on Mars? What degree of high or low temperature, pressure, or salt concentration can living cells tolerate? In recent years, scientists have discovered many single-cell creatures that exist in-in fact, are perfectly adapted to-extreme environments that were considered uninhabitable just one or two decades ago. In Life on the Edge, author Michael Gross explores how microorganisms adapt to their hostile environments and how they affect our current definition of the "normal" conditions for life. He also describes the vast implications of these extremophiles and other amazing creatures-from potential breakthroughs in medicine and biotechnology to the search for life elsewhere in the universe.

Book excerpt: Living on the Edge is risky advice for living an adventurous life. I begin with a brief sketch about my life and the influences that took me in the direction it did. I discuss communication models and paradigms that have helped me live in cross-cultural risky environments. I learned to validate people without endorsing values that are counter to my own. I’ve learned how to create a space to put things I haven’t understood or about which I didn’t yet have enough information to make an informed decision. I’ve learned that it’s not a bad thing to be a “child of the light” in times of darkness. These and more comprise advice, some of it risky, I’d like to give my millennial friends. I suggest that God is the great Recycler and that he doesn’t make junk, and there’s more.

Book Synopsis Families on the Edge by : Elizabeth Carpenter-Song
Download or read book Families on the Edge written by Elizabeth Carpenter-Song and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate account of rural New England families living on the edge of homelessness, as well as the practices and policies of care that fail them. Families on the Edge is an ethnographic portrait of families in rural and small-town New England who are often undercut by the very systems that are set up to help them. In this book, author and medical anthropologist Elizabeth Carpenter-Song draws on a decade of ethnographic research to chart the struggles of a cohort of families she met in a Vermont family shelter in 2009, as they contend with housing insecurity, mental illness, and substance use. Few other works have attempted to take such a long-term view of how vulnerability to homelessness unfolds over time or to engage so fully with existing scholarship in the fields of anthropology and health services. Research on homelessness in the United States has been overwhelmingly conducted in urban settings, so much less is known about its trajectory in rural areas and small towns. Carpenter-Song’s book identifies how specific aspects of rural New England—including scarce affordable housing stock, extremely limited transportation, and cultural expectations of self-reliance—come together to thwart opportunities for families despite their continual striving to “make it” in this environment. Carpenter-Song shines a light on the many high-stakes consequences that occur when systems of care fail and offers a way forward for clinicians, health researchers, and policymakers seeking practical solutions.

Download or read book Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability 8/10 written by Ray C. Anderson and published by Berkshire Publishing Group. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Americas and Oceania: Assessing Sustainability provides extensive coverage of sustainability practices in two regions linked culturally and historically by their relative isolation before the Columbian exchange, by their colonization after it, and by the challenges of pollution, resource overuse, and environmental degradation. Regional experts and international scholars focus on environmental history in areas such as the South Pacific islands, now particularly threatened by rising ocean levels due to climate change, and on countries whose governments and corporations can play a major role in promoting or discouraging sustainable choices: Brazil, an emergent power on the world stage; the United States, the world's third most populous nation; and New Zealand, seemingly on its way to becoming an enviable model of sustainable development.
