Book excerpt: "Two sections of the Upper Devonian Guilmette Formation in White Pine County, Nevada, were measured and sampled to determine its paleoenvironmental and depositional history. The Guilmette was deposited predominately during a transgressive phase that was interrupted by minor regressions. The formation was divided into five informal members on the basis of lithologic and paleontological occurrences. Each member was broken down into separate microfacies representing a variety of environments. The depositional environment for each member is: 1) Alternating dolomite-limestone member--deposited in an intertidal-shallow lagoon with minor fluctuations of transgression and regression. 2) Lower mound member--deposited in a slightly restricted deep lagoon with an abundance of stromatoporoids. Small biohermal mounds are associated with this member. 3) Fore-mound member--initially deposited in a restricted lagoon environment that prograded into an open marine shallow shelf. 4) Upper mound member--deposited during fluctuating sealevel that caused alternations between lagoon and open marine conditions. The upper most part represents a trend toward shallow open shelf contitions. 5) Inter-mound member--represents a regressive phase noted in the Pancake Range that is not present in the Cherry Creek Range. The absence of this member in the Cherry Creek section may be a result of tectonic uplift initiated by onset of the Antler Orogeny. Transgression occurred during the Upper Givetian and Frasnian in an easterly direction across Nevada and Utah"--Document.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: "Three sections of the Upper Mississippian Chainman Formation in eastern Nevada and western Utah were measured and sampled to determine the depositional history. The Chainman was deposited as a regressive sequence in the Antler foreland basin. Infilling of this basin by flysch deposits from the Antler highland, pelagic settling and gravity flows resulted in five distinct, recurring lithofacies. The five lithofacies are: (1) shale, (2) siltstone, (3) sandstone, (4) dolomite, and (5) limestone. Petrographic analysis of thin sections made from the samples collected aided in placing the lithofacies into basin, slope, or carbonate bank environments. The basin facies is characterized by fine material with even, uniform and generally massive bedding. Sparse fossils and dark shale and limestone are associated with this facies. In the slope environment, mud is dominant. Fossils, except for microforms in the later sediments, tend to be limited in number. The carbonate bank sediments are relatively coarse, generally fossiliferous, and light gray in color. These sediments were deposited in a higher energy environment"--Document.

Book excerpt: This bulletin serves not only to introduce the non-geologist to the rich geology of Millard County, but also to provide professional geologists with technical information on the stratigraphy, paleontology, and structural geology of the county. Millard County is unique among Utah’s counties in that it contains an exceptionally complete billion-year geologic record. This happened because until about 200 million years ago the area of present-day Millard County lay near sea level and was awash in shallow marine waters on a continental shelf upon which a stack of fossil-bearing strata more than 6 miles (10 km) thick slowly accumulated. This bulletin summarizes what is known about these strata, as well as younger rocks and surficial deposits in the county, and provides references to scientific papers that describe them in greater detail. Mountains North 30 x 60 (1:100,000-scale) quadrangles. These companion maps and this bulletin portray the geology of Millard County more completely and accurately than any previously published work.

Book excerpt: An early reviewer of this book stated that he had difficulty assessing its marketability because it "falls between the cracks" of geological literature. We have designed this book to meet a need of modem geology: namely, a single source providing both detailed and synoptic stratigraphy of the various regions of North America, through geological time. Shortly after beginning work on such a book, we realized why it had not yet been written: it required six years of effort, assimilation of an incredible amount of information, and two years' additional work to cut the volume down to publishable size. Further, by the time the final chapter was written, the fIrst few were already out of date. Nevertheless, the book lies in front of you. It is intended to serve several purposes. As a textbook, it will serve the following courses: • Regional stratigraphy • Sedimentary tectonics • Regional tectonics • Advanced historical geology • Survey-level paleontology Obviously, not all portions of the book are relevant to all of the above courses. We assume the reader will retain this book after the particular course is done, and will use it as a reference book. Hopefully, others will obtain the book solely for reference purposes. We believe it will be especially useful for the working geologist or academic geologist seeking generalized and some moderately detailed information about a region or geological time interval which is unfamiliar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petrochronology is a rapidly emerging branch of Earth science that links time (ages or rates) with specific rock-forming processes and their physical conditions. It is founded in petrology and geochemistry, which define a petrogenetic context or delimit a specific process, to which chronometric data are then linked. This combination informs Earth’s petrogenetic processes better than petrology or geochronology alone. This volume and the accompanying short courses address three broad categories of inquiry. Conceptual approaches chapters include petrologic modeling of multi-component chemical and mineralogic systems, and development of methods that include diffusive alteration of mineral chemistry. Methods chapters address four main analytical techniques, specifically EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, SIMS and TIMS. Mineral-specific chapters explore applications to a wide range of minerals, including zircon (metamorphic, igneous, and detrital/Hadean), baddeleyite, REE minerals (monazite, allanite, xenotime and apatite), titanite, rutile, garnet, and major igneous minerals (olivine, plagioclase and pyroxenes). These applications mainly focus on metamorphic, igneous, or tectonic processes, but additionally elucidate fundamental transdisciplinary progress in addressing mechanisms of crystal growth, the chemical consequences of mineral growth kinetics, and how chemical transport and deformation affect chemically complex mineral composites. Most chapters further recommend areas of future research.
