This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, more than 40,000 people died prematurely in Sindh, Pakistan because of an illness associated with an environmental health risk. This means that almost one of every five deaths that occurred that year was caused by environmental factors. Loss of natural resources and impacts from natural disasters also represent development challenges. Increased salinity and waterlogging result in loss of agricultural crops. In addition, hydro-meteorological hazards recurrently affect Sindh, as illustrated by the devastating effects of the 2010 and 2011 floods. For Sindh's population, these problems mean pain and suffering, and reduced opportunities for economic advancement. The costs of all these phenomena are equivalent to 10% of Sindh's Gross Domestic Product. Climate change may exacerbate these challenges. Sindh's environmental and climate change problems call for urgent responses. A number of feasible interventions could be carried out to address the categories of environmental degradation that have the highest impacts on Sindh's population. Many of those interventions have positive benefit-cost ratios, meaning that every rupee invested in them would result in health and social benefits worth more than one rupee. Addressing these challenges also calls for targeted institutional strengthening and policy improvements, particularly after the 18th Constitutional Amendment devolved environmental management responsibilities to provincial governments. The underlying goal of this book is to facilitate and stimulate sharing of information on these phenomena, and to provide an interdisciplinary framework for bringing about improved environmental conditions in Sindh. It includes a methodology that enables the identification of environmental and climate change priority problems; the analysis of interventions to address such problems; the establishment of a social learning mechanism to continuously improve Sindh's responses and build resilience in the face of climate variability and change; and opportunities for the potential involvement of different stakeholder groups to decisively tackle climate change and deteriorating environmental conditions.

Book Synopsis Public Interest Environmental Litigation in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh by : Jona Razzaque
Download or read book Public Interest Environmental Litigation in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh written by Jona Razzaque and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examines the growth and expansion of public interest environmental litigation (PIEL) in India and analyses the changes that are influencing the development of PIEL in Bangladesh and Pakistan. The necessity for this research lies in the rapid degradation of environment and the need of efficient environmental management in the three countries of the South Asian region. Here, we compare the legal systems of the three countries from the environmental point of view, discuss new ideas and directions and critically analyse the legal provisions that would help to apply environmental norms. These offer the legislators a chance to find out what can be applied in their own region, thus developing their existing legal mechanisms. About the author Jona Razzaque is barrister and holds a PhD in law from the University of London. She works in the field of access to environmental justice and has published numerous articles on this issue. She taught law in Queen Mary College and School of Oriental and African Studies under the University of London. She is currently working as a lawyer in the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD) on cross-themed projects related to bio-diversity, trade and climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan is a geographical gem-a land with the greatest change in elevation within any sovereign state on earth, from 0 metres at Sonmiani Bay to 8,611 metres at the summit of K-2. Such dramatic changes in altitude have resulted in incredibly diverse ecosystems with wildlife ranging from snow leopards up in the high mountains to marine turtles on the coast. This book, written by the pioneering Pakistani environmental journalist, Rina Saeed Khan, is an attempt to highlight some of this amazing diversity. From Mountains to Mangroves informs the reader about the many inspiring stories of conservation activities taking place across Pakistan. The sixteen stories in the book are penned in an engaging, personal manner with rigorous research endorsed by WWF-Pakistan. An important record of the recent conservation history of Pakistan, these stories have been selected from the author's many travels over the past two decades to far-flung areas ranging from the Karakoram Mountains to the Makran Coast.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Contemporary Pakistan by : Ghulam Ali
Download or read book Perspectives on Contemporary Pakistan written by Ghulam Ali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses problems of governance, development and environment affecting contemporary Pakistan; issues that lie at the centre of federal and provincial policy deliberations, formulation and implementation. The book offers a comprehensive assessment of the policies, or lack thereof. Authors from a variety of disciplines empirically and conceptually evaluate latest developments, events and data regarding law and order, economic under-performance, social intolerance and climate crisis. The book offers varied perspectives on state sovereignty, civil-military relations, spousal violence, rural development, CPEC, nuclear governance and transboundary climate risk. Arguing that the conclusions should be adopted by the social, political and economic stakeholders of Pakistan, as well as the region at the higher level of governability, the book demonstrates that it would both boost national morale and inspire individuals to further investigate to come up with innovative solutions. Examining some of the most pressing and persistent problems Pakistan and South Asia is facing, the book will be of interest to academics working in the fields of Political Science, in particular South Asian Politics, Development Studies and Environmental Studies.
Book Synopsis Cleaning Pakistan’s Air by : Ernesto Sánchez-Triana
Download or read book Cleaning Pakistan’s Air written by Ernesto Sánchez-Triana and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extent of urban air pollution in Pakistan—South Asia's most urbanized country—is among the world’s most severe, significantly damaging human health, quality of life, and the economy and environment of Pakistan. The harm from Pakistan's urban air pollution is among the highest in South Asia, exceeding several high-profile causes of mortality and morbidity in Pakistan. Improved air quality management (AQM) in Pakistan can have notable economic and health benefits. For example, the estimated health benefits per dollar spent on cleaner diesel are approximately US $1–1.5 for light-duty diesel vehicles and US $1.5–2.4 for large buses and trucks. This report advocates that Pakistan allocate resources to AQM, because its air quality is severely affecting millions of Pakistanis, and because experiences around the world indicate that interventions can significantly improve air quality. This report details a broad spectrum of research on Pakistan’s AQM challenges, and identifies a comprehensive set of steps to improve air quality. The research presented here underpins the conclusions that addressing Pakistan's urban air pollution requires coordinated interventions to strengthen AQM, build agencies' institutional capacity, bolster AQM's legal and regulatory framework, implement policy reforms and investments, and fill knowledge gaps. However, Pakistan's policy makers face major obstacles, including limited financial, human, and technical resources, and can pursue only a few AQM interventions at the same time. In the short term, Pakistan's AQM should give highest priority to reducing pollutants linked to high morbidity and mortality: PM2.5 (and precursors like SOx and NOx) from mobile sources. A second-level short-term priority could be PM2.5, SOx, and emissions of toxic metals from stationary sources. An important medium-term priority should be mass transportation in major cities, controlling traffic, and restricting private cars during high-pollution episodes. A long-term priority could be taxing hydrocarbons, based on their contribution to greenhouse gases.

What is the CDM doing with Pakistan? How and where has it worked? Has it spurred any local effects? To this end I will start out by giving an overview of Pakistan’s current emissions and possible CDM approaches and then take a close look at all 29 registered CDM projects. I will also assess whether these projects have had an impact on Pakistan’s overall emission pattern and whether some form of technology transfer has taken place. In a second major part of this essay I shall try to identify the effects that the CDM has had and if it has been able to spur local development within the government, the economy or academia and civil society.

Book excerpt: From victim to trailblazer: Pakistan is showing how developing nations can overcome adversity and pave their own path to prosperityRecord-high temperatures, droughts, flooding, and extreme weather? These are just some of the destructive effects of climate change that Pakistan has to face regularly. Even though Pakistan contributes less than 1% of the world's carbon emissions, it's one of the nations that suffers the most from its effects.Climate change has caused illnesses, deaths, and food and water shortages, as well as displacement and financial losses in the country. And all this is happening while it's still a third world nation that's trying to industrialize. In addition to natural disasters, Pakistan also faces unemployment and lack of funds, among other problems. With all these stacked against them, Pakistan is fighting back.It has launched environmental programs that incentivize clean energy and is focusing on solutions that not only address its ecological concerns, but also its economic ones. It's living proof that building up your economy and protecting your environment don't have to be diametrically opposed. In fact, Pakistan is showing just how critical one is for the other. In 10 Billion Tree Tsunami, you will discover:?Why Pakistan is considered one of the vulnerable countries with respect to climate change - and how it's taking action against it?How Pakistan is solving two of its most pressing problems with this widely praised green initiative? How this still-developing country plans to sustain its economic growth while reducing its carbon emissions?International recognition for Pakistan's 10 billion tree tsunami program, including a tweet from one unexpected supporter? The creative solution that provides Pakistan with much-needed funds for its environmental programs without adding to its debt burden?Groundbreaking ideas and practices from Pakistan that the rest of world should followAnd much more. The fact that Pakistan is taking responsibility in tackling carbon emissions, even though it's not responsible for most of it, shows that they're not willing to wait around for someone else to solve their problems.
