Book excerpt: The 'manual' of the Underwater Demolition Teams During World War 2 the US Navy saw the need for specialized teams that could clear the way for amphibious assaults in many theatres of war. Underwater Demolition Teams would remove natural and man-made underwater obstacles which are likely to obstruct landing operations.. With not much more than swim shorts, mask, fins and explosives these commandos were sent in advance of major landings on beach recon missions or to clear underwater obstacles and booby traps. This manual outlines and describes the mission and tactical use of Underwater Demolition Teams, duties of team members, selection of trainees, organization of the school, methods and facilities for training, description and length of courses, instructional references, and training aids. • handling and use of explosives • underwater reconnaissance • removal of obstacles • mines and booby traps • seamanship • night vision and observation • use of rubber boats • physical conditioning • long distance surf swimming Illustrated with over 90 pictures and charts. A must-have for students of WWII special operations or U.S. Navy UDT aka 'Frog Men.' Bonus content: This volume also includes an additional 40+ page after-action report on the preparation, and results of the NCDU teams deployed in support the Normandy Invasions on D-Day, which includes their specific recommendations for future amphibious landings.

Book excerpt: To place this book in perspective it is useful for the reader to be aware of the recent history of the topic of underwater sound generation at the ocean surface by natural mechanisms. A meeting in Lerici, Italy in 1987 was convened within the NATO Advanced Research Workshop series, to bring together underwater acousticians and ocean hydrodynamicists to examine various mechanisms which generate sound naturally at the ocean surface. A record of that meeting was published in the NATO scientific publication series in 1988 under the title 'Sea Surface Sound'. That meeting was successful in inspiring and co ordinating both participants and non-attending colleagues to examine some key issues which were raised during the course of presentations and discussions. The understanding among those present was that another meeting should be convened 3 years hence to report and review progress in the subject. Accordingly the second conference was convened in Cambridge in 1990, whose proceedings are presented here. This volume represents a very gratifying increase in only a 3 year interval in our understanding of a number of physical processes which generate sound at the peripheries of oceans. In fact it represents both the acceleration of singular effort as well as the development of interdisciplinary sophistication and co-operation. The enthusiasm, goodwill, and intense scientific curiosity which characterized the Lerici meeting carried through to Cambridge. The collegial atmosphere established by the participants was perfectly timed to foster another major advance in studies of ocean surface sound.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep learning (DL), mainly composed of deep and complex neural networks such as recurrent network and convolutional network, is an emerging research branch in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. DL revolution has a far-reaching impact on all scientific disciplines and every corner of our lives. With continuing technological advances, marine science is entering into the big data era with the exponential growth of information. DL is an effective means of harnessing the power of big data. Combined with unprecedented data from cameras, acoustic recorders, satellite remote sensing, and large model outputs, DL enables scientists to solve complex problems in biology, ecosystems, climate, energy, as well as physical and chemical interactions. Although DL has made great strides, it is still only beginning to emerge in many fields of marine science, especially towards representative applications and best practices for the automatic analysis of marine organisms and marine environments. DL in nowadays' marine science mainly leverages cutting-edge techniques of deep neural networks and massive data which collected by in-situ optical or acoustic imaging sensors for underwater applications, such as plankton classification and coral reef detection. This research topic aims to expand the applications of marine science to cover all aspects of detection, classification, segmentation, localization, and density estimation of marine objects, organisms, and phenomena.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the evaluation of two species of insects for the biological control of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.). One of the species is a native weevil, Litodactylus leucogaster (Marsh.), which attacks the flower spikes, and the other is an accidentally introduced European moth, Acentria nivea (Oliver), whose larvae feed on the leaves and stems. The biology of L. leucogaster was studied in detail and host-specificity tests were conducted with adults and larvae. Since it was determined to be specific to watermilfoils, it was released at Crystal River, Florida, on 22 August 1979. Two adults were captured at Crystal River in November indicating possible establishment. The pyralid moth, A. nivea, was difficult to rear in the laboratory. Since the females were active only one night, successful matings were rare in the small colony. Larval production was best in containers that were minimally disturbed. the larvae required water temperatures below 22 C for development though they could survive short periods at higher temperatures. The larvae were not specific to milfoil; however, A. nivea may still be of interest as a member of a complex of species which attack milfoil. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tens of thousands of different animal species live on this planet, having survived for millions of years through adaptation and evolution, which has given them a vast variety of structures and functions. Biomechanical studies of animals swimming and flying can aid understanding of the mechanisms that enable them to move effectively and efficiently in fluids . Based on such understandings and analyses, we can aim to develop environmentally friendly machines that emulate these natu ral movements. The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 agreed major treaties on biological diversity, addressing the comb ined issues of environmental protection and fair and equitable economic development. With regard to coastal environments, increasing biological diversity has begun to play an important role in reestablishing stable and sustainable ecosystems. This approach has begun to influence research into the behavior of aquatic species, as an understanding of the history of an individual aquatic species is indispensable in constructing an environmental assessment mod el that includes the physical, chemical, and biological effects of that species . From an engineering viewpoint, studying nature's biological diversity is an opportunity to reconsider mechanical systems that were systematically constructed in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. We have been accumulating knowledge of the sys tems inherent in biological creatures and using that knowledge to create new, envi ronmentally friendly technologies.
