Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of Correggio: Reproduced in One Hundred and Ninety-Six Illustrations; With a Biographical Introduction At the age of twenty Correggio completed his first great altar picture destined for the Church of San Francesco in his native town. The subject, of course, was the regular Madonna and Saints, and the artist was, in a measure, compelled to paint after the traditional manner. In spite, however, Of the limitations to which he was bound, the painting shows remarkable departures from the accepted standard for such pictures. The stiffness of the symmetrical com positions is finely softened, while a fine light atmosphere pervades the whole. Correggio took six months over the work and signed his name to it - an evidence of his pride in the composition, since only once again did he distinguish any work from his hand in this manner, when he signed the Madonna of Albinea. Another picture very similar to this in composition is the altar piece for the church of St. Maria della Misericordia in Correggio, which pictures the four saints. The Madonna of Albinea, painted between 1517 and 1519, closes the first period of Correggio's art career. The original cannot be traced, and we have it now in several reproductions. Here Correggio shows the Madonna in the open country, resting on the turf beneath a tall tree. Only the solemn expression on the faces of the two women suggest that the picture might be that Of a sacred subject. Book excerpt: The exhibition aims to allow visitors to avail themselves of a selection of masterpieces from some of the world's leading museums to compare and contrast the artistic careers of two of the greatest luminaries of the Italian Renaissance ? Antonio Allegri known as Correggio (1489-1534) and Francesco Mazzola known as Parmigianino (1503-40). The formidable talent of these two artists alone placed the city of Parma in the early 16th century on an equal footing with the peninsula's other great art capitals, Rome, Florence and Venice. 0 0Correggio only travelled to Parma when he was already at the height of his career, in the late 1510s, but he was to remain in the city for the rest of his life. Some twenty of his paintings, covering his entire career, have been selected to underscore the extraordinary emotive force and expressive range that the artist put not only into his religious works but also into his mythological paintings, which were to have such a huge impact on later artists, ranging from the Carracci brothers to Watteau and even to Picasso. 0 0The exhibition 'Correggio e Parmigianino. Arte a Parma nel Ciquecento' ('Correggio and Parmigianino. Art in Parma during the 16th century') hosts such unquestioned masterpieces as the Barrymore Madonna from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Portrait of a Lady from the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Martyrdom of Four Saints from the Galleria Nazionale in Parma, the Noli Me Tangere from the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the School of Love from the National Gallery in London and the Danaë from Rome's Galleria Borghese. 00Exhibition: Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome, Italy (12.03.-26.06.2016).

Book excerpt: Estelle May Hurll (1863-1924) was the author of The Madonna in Art (1898), Raphael (1899), Jean François Millet (1900), Michelangelo (1900), Correggio (1901), Child-Life in Art (1901), The Bible Beautiful (1908), Sir Joshua Reynolds, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Tuscan Sculpture of the Fifteenth Century. "To the general public the works of Correggio are much less familiar than those of other Italian painters. Parma lies outside the route of the ordinary tourist, and the treasures of its gallery and churches are still unsuspected by many. It is hoped that this little collection of pictures may arouse a new interest in the great Emilian. The selections are about equally divided between the frescoes of Parma and the easel paintings scattered through the various European galleries. "
