Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Can we achieve the magic of reflecting on the ‘law of the future’ through works of art, and vice versa? The answer is yes – when experience and skill converge with creativity and luck. Compliance and privacy, principles of law and secrets of the legal profession, innovation, and technology blend with the colours on canvasses, the shapes of sculptures, the notes of musical compositions and instruments, and the verses of poems and songs. Following on from The Art of Privacy, this new book by Luca Bolognini explores the rules of the law from a perspective never seen before: the legal landscape morphs into masterpieces by Klimt, Tintoretto, Kandinsky, and so on. Perusing this collection of 53 reflections – written one at a time, each week over the course of a year – gives the reader a feeling of being fortunate: metaphors and associations of ideas are etched onto the page with the same rush of joy as capturing a dream upon waking, before it slips away. A good read, for a beautiful imagination.” Passi di: Luca Bolognini. “Painted Privacy”. Apple Books.

Book excerpt: This original analysis of the representation and self-representation of women in literature and visual arts revolves around multiple early modern senses of "painting": the creation of visual art in the form of paint on canvas and the use of cosmetics to paint women's bodies. Situating her study in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italy, France, and England, Patricia Phillippy brings together three distinct actors: women who paint themselves with cosmetics, women who paint on canvas, and women and men who paint women—either with pigment or with words. Phillippy asserts that early modern attitudes toward painting, cosmetics, and poetry emerge from and respond to a common cultural history. Materially, she connects those who created images of women with pigment to those who applied cosmetics to their own bodies through similar mediums, tools, techniques, and exposure to toxic materials. Discursively, she illuminates historical and social issues such as gender and morality with the nexus of painting, painted women, and women painters. Teasing out the intricate relationships between these activities as carried out by women and their visual and literary representation by women and by men, Phillippy aims to reveal the delineation and transgression of women's creative roles, both artistic and biological. In Painting Women, Phillippy provides a cross-disciplinary study of women as objects and agents of painting.

Book excerpt: The novel Another Kind of Hero features a young Roman Catholic priest, Vincent Dwyer, who after completing his seminary studies in the turbulent mid-1960’s, follows his vocation in the footsteps of three uncles who became priests in the same diocese a generation before. Newly assigned as an associate for a veteran pastor at his boyhood parish, he encounters Julie Leffert, a distraught parishioner and a young mother of six children, one windswept night when she arrives at the rectory seeking counseling for her troubled marriage. In the course of assisting this attractive but distressed woman, Vincent realizes that he is falling in love with her and her large brood of children. Responding to what he sees as a greater calling to marry Julie and help her raise her children, he leaves the priesthood to follow what he now feels is his true vocation. Intra-familial conflicts and many trials ensue as he undertakes a long, difficult journey with his newfound family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area around your home is your haven, your sanctuary, your refuge from the noise and irritation of traffic, eyesores, and nosy neighbors. Or at least it could be if there was some sort of barrier between your front yard and the sidewalk, or if you didn't have to stare at the back of the neighbors' garage when you want to relax on your patio. Landscaping for Privacy brims with creative ideas for minimizing or even eliminating the nuisances that intrude on your personal outdoor space. Scores of real-world examples show you how to keep the outside world at bay by strategically placing buffers (such as berms or groups of small trees), barriers (such as fences), and screens (arbors or hedges, for example) around your property. And the helpful plant lists tell you precisely which varieties to choose in order to enhance your sense of seclusion. If you've ever felt frustrated by the lack of privacy whenever you step outside your home, this inspiring book will steer you toward an achievable solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information revolution has brought with it the technology for easily collecting personal information about individuals, a facility that inherently threatens personal privacy. Colin J. Bennett here examines political responses to the data protection issue in four Western democracies, comparing legislation that the United States, Britain, West Germany, and Sweden forged from the late 1960's to the 1980's to protect citizens from unwanted computer dissemination of personal information. Drawing on an extensive body of interviews and documentary evidence, Bennett considers how the four countries, each with different cultural traditions and institutions, formulated fair information policy. He finds that their computer regulatory laws are based on strikingly similar statutory principles, but that enforcement of these principles varies considerably: the United States relies on citizen initiative and judicial enforcement; Britain uses a registration system; Germany has installed an ombudsman; and Sweden employs a licensing system. Tracing the impact of key social, political, and technological factors on the ways different political systems have controlled the collection and communication of information, Bennett also deepens our understanding of policymaking theory. Regulating Privacy will be welcomed by political sciences--especially those working in comparative public policy, American politics, organization theory, and technology and politics--political economists, information systems analysts, and others concerned with issues of privacy.
