Book excerpt: A POLITICAL PROVOCATION FROM A PAIR OF PHYSICIANS WRITING OUTSIDE THEIR LANE Americans care about their health. Americans pay lots of money in hopes of maintaining their health. So why are Americans so unhealthy? The reason is simple: as a country, the United States overinvests in medical care at the expense of the social, economic, and cultural forces that produce health. The rise of medicine as a cornerstone of American life and culture has coincided with a social and political devaluation of factors demonstrated to mean more to our vitality than anything else -- influences like where we live, work, and play; livable wages that create opportunity for healthy living; and gender and racial equity. In Pained, physicians Michael Stein and Sandro Galea push the conversation around American health where it belongs: toward matters of class, money, and culture. Across more than 50 essays and data illustrations, Pained casts a light on how the structural components of everyday life -- like school, housing, police, even cell phones -- ultimately determine who gets to be healthy in today's America. In doing so, it makes a case for reframing our political discourse in less myopic, more effectual terms. Accessible and surprising, political but not partisan, Pained is the urgent, uncomfortable conversation that American needs in this challenging moment. It will delight and infuriate readers of all political stripes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detention camps exceed the juridical concept of punishment and crime. This book comprises two parts: 1. a collected volume that discusses camps not as something of the past, but as a paradigmatic political space in which ordinary law is completely suspended, and 2. an Italian-English parallel text of the war diary of an Italian prisoner during his confinement at the Stalag X-B internment camp near Sandbostel from 1943–1945. 1. The Human Condition of Exception: Collected Essays Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace Written in Italian and English, the essays collected in this volume explore the issue of camps and suffering from various perspectives, including philosophical inquiry, literary analysis, historical description and legal assessment. As Agamben suggests, the camp embodies the state of exception. A dehumanising camp life will therefore emerge every time such a structure is created. What happens in camps exceeds the juridical concept of punishment, as well as that of crime. Prisoners are faced with a ‘useless’ pain (Levinas) as it is not the expiation of a fault. Prisoners attempt to describe their extreme suffering through their diaries. Their experience, however, cannot be entirely communicated. Even their screams, which express humanity at the extreme limit of its un-power, are silenced. Given the recent popularity of right-wing politics, as well as the centenary of Mussolini’s march on Rome, such research is more urgent than ever. The book will appeal to readers with an interest in philosophy as well as Irish history scholars studying internment during Partition and The Troubles in Northern Ireland. 2. Aldo Quarisa’s Diary: An Italian-English Edition Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace. Transcribed and with a preface by Galileo Sartor. Translation of the diary by Aisling Reid (Italian-English). In 1943, Aldo Quarisa worked at a military school in Florence, where he taught literature. In October of that year, one month after Italy had surrendered to the Allied forces, the Italians declared war on the Germans. In Florence, the German occupiers responded quickly, by arresting and deporting people with military connections to numerous concentration camps in Austria. Quite suddenly, Aldo was detained and deported through a network of camps, including Benjaminovo and the Stalag X-B internment camp, near the Austrian village of Sandbostel. For two years, he found himself imprisoned alongside other Italians, including the celebrated journalist Giovannino Guareschi, who secretly kept a diary that was later published as his Diario Clandestino 1943–1945 in 1946. Much like Guareschi, Aldo also kept a diary and excerpts are published here in both Italian and English for the first time. The diary describes in unprecedented detail the monotony of camp life, the cruelty of the guards and the prisoners’ struggle to survive. The text is an important document that preserves the memory and voices of all those who suffered during the war and will inevitably be of interest to readers with an interest in World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain serves a purpose. When going through the pains of life, it can easily blindside us, which leaves an open window for the enemy to depress us, oppress us, and if it goes on too long, he can even overtake us. Not knowing that our pain serves a purpose can make us bound and stuck mentally and spiritually, and it can all affect our physical life as well. Although the enemy has a plan to kill, steal, and destroy, God also has a plan; and his plan is purpose driven not only for us but for the kingdom of God and to help somebody else who may be dealing with the same things he has brought us through. The purpose of God is the will and the plans of God that he has for us, and he works all things, including the things we face in life, according to his purposes. Having faith in him and his plans, even when the pain is overwhelming, is one of the keys to living the abundant life that he has for us. Your pain serves a purpose, even when you don't understand it. And because he is an intentional God and all-knowing, it is the reason we are Pained on Purpose. He is with us when we are going through these pains, helping us and pulling us through so that we can testify of his goodness that he may be glorified, and somebody else can be made free and whole by his Spirit. Pain doesn't have to be the end of your story, but it can be the beginning of what God intended to be a perfect end.

And then, after months of spontaneous and constant pain - Chronic Pain. Ms. Levy takes us with her on her journey from who she was to who she became. We experience the fight with herself, the pain, and often the medical system itself, as she reaches out for relief and acceptance. "A fascinating story, honestly told and courageously lived." Stephen S. Hall, N.Y.Times magazine science and medicine writer. Author, Invisible Frontiers: The Race To Synthesize A Human Gene. "This is the first time I have been let in so completely into the life of somewone living with chronic pain. A Pained Life is a compelling read. Ms. Levy has laid bare her experiencr so that others know that ultimately there is hope. I recommend it to pain patients, members of the medical community and the public at large." John Park, M.D., anaesthesiologist and pain specialist. "A Pained Life is an unsophisticated book, but it is so real, so honestly told, so suspenseful, that it is hard to put down. Carol Jay Levys courage and perseverance can help light the way for others who endure pain and a medical maze, with little hope and less help. Medical professionals might also gain insight from this personal story of someone at the other end of the stethoscope." Kathy Lyons 3/28/04, American Chronic Pain Association. "The detail with which the writer is able to describe the lead-up and surrounding details of the medical condition finally diagnosed as Trigeminal Neuralgia captures the readers attention with great intensity. The author has a good ability to draw emotions from the reader. She has done an exceptional job in writing so that the reader feels strong emotion about the author." Writers Digest International Self-published Book Awards competition. "My husband is reading your book now and seems *much* more empathetic. After he finishes it, I am lending it to my therapist and chiro who are great people but havent a clue what its like to live with pain 24/7. You are such a wonderful writer." A.gye, pain patient. "I finished the book, and it really was a GREAT read!! The way you described everything so vividly, made it feel like I was there along with you every step of the way! Jeremy Baker, Fox TV.

Book excerpt: Too Pained to Live, Too Scared to Die presents the voice of a military veteran, Frank White, who struggles, after his active duty's conclusion, with substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. He begins this memoir by reflecting on his early life, uncovering the roots of his circumstances in the events of those formative years. At times confessional in tone, always straightforward, Too Pained to Live, Too Scare to Die brings to life Frank White's efforts to live in the place caught between the two poles contained in the title. Whether you care about the challenges facing this country's veterans, you know a veteran who confronts such obstacles, you are a veteran yourself, or you simply care about the issues others face in their daily lives, Too Pained to Live, Too Scared to Die will tell you a story that will stay with you.
