Book excerpt: In 1904 a famous and legendary physician named Sir William Osler counseled doctors to “Live a simple and temperate life, that you may give all your powers to your profession. Medicine is a jealous mistress; she will be satisfied with no less.” Unlike this famous advice, most physicians do not live a simple life. The demands by patients, hospitals, communities, political groups, and others for a doctor’s time can be extraordinary. As a young boy Dr. Osler’s mistress seduced me, and I have had a lifelong affair with her. The book’s title, Paging Dr. A, relates to the many ways I was summoned or contacted over the years. A phone ringing, or a pager beeping, or a nurse having a hunch about a patient, or a sheriff coming to my home in the middle of the night all requested my help. I learned that someone waving at me in a crowd, a pat on my back, or a note written on a scrap of paper could also be asking for my assistance with a medical problem or to give a presentation to educate others. With time and experience, I learned that a person’s appearance and body language often communicated a better medical history than the spoken word. This retrospective presents more true stories about my journey through fifty years of medicine. Some stories have extended notes inserted into the text to give the reader clarity about certain topics. Some stories contain “Food For Thought” topics. Like the stories in my other books, Reflections of a Country Doctor, The Next Prescription, and Side Effects, some are silly, some are sad, some will make you happy, and some might make you mad. I hope you enjoy this portion of my life’s journey in medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains my reflections upon my 26 years as an "old time" generalist family physician in rural America. It is merely a collection of stories that depict some of my many experiences over the years. The stories mirror those of many of my generalist colleagues who have experienced "the trenches" of rural primary care. My stories span the breadth and depth of the discipline of rural family medicine. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life, from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community, and from making house calls to providing emergency room care. Some are silly, some are sad, some are funny, and some may make you mad. JIMMIE ASHCRAFT, M.D. Doctor Ashcraft is a graduate of the University of Oregon Medical School. He was a member of the clinical staff of the University of Washington Medical School for 30 years. Doctor Ashcraft and his wife, Kay, live in Montana. They have three grown children and six grandchildren.

Book excerpt: A humorous, anecdotal history of the author's medical practice from 1936 to 1988, it describes a simpler time, during which doctors practiced without many of the problems that face modern physicians: forms to complete for every procedure, overcrowded offices, second opinions, high insurance costs, etc. In fact, much of the book is about the unique doctor-patient relationships that existed before the age of health insurance. It was a different kind of time, when the family doctor often met his patient at the emergency room and remained the sole treating physician throughout the hospital stay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: House calls. Flu epidemics. Terminal illnesses. Coroner duties. Fishhook incidents. For more than three decades, Roger A. MacDonald served the people of Minnesota's north woods as a family practitioner and jack-of-all-trades, even responding to the occasional "barn call" for ailing animals. In this new collection of stories, MacDonald takes readers on another round of house calls, office visits, and emergency summons. His remote practice saw patients of every age and type, from a local child with a penchant for putting things up his nose to a dedicated church pianist with untreatable cancer, from a teenager with unexplained seizures to a vacationing Mafioso recovering from a heart attack. MacDonald offers tales of patients, colleagues, and neighbors, probing their very human responses to medical dilemmas and sharing humorous and touching episodes in equal portions. A Country Doctor's Chronicle is a charming collection of vignettes--some hopeful, some heartbreaking--that offer a unique look at a bygone era of twentieth-century rural America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of a Country Doctor And last and best of all, dear reader, I desired to make something out of the enter prise. If I do there will be rejoicing at our house when the receipts come in. There will be a feast in which the timbrel and the hewgag will be sounded, and I promise you that the widow and the orphan shall not be forgotten. Complaint may be made that the per sonal pronoun I has been used Oftener than it should have been. This may be true. My friends say that I have a plenty Of that very necessary faculty called self esteem. TO this I also plead guilty and put myself upon the country. AS a defense, however, I desire to say that most Of the things written about in this book have a personal relationship to myself, and, being too modest to put myself on an equality with the editors and the Lord, by saying we I was compelled to say I; so the 'i's' seem to have it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Denton grew up in small mining towns of the Mojave desert, himself the son of a small town doctor. Following his father's footsteps, he attended medical school at Northwestern in Chicago, where he met and married Betty Spaeth. He and Betty then moved to Bishop, California, a small town in a wild setting between the fourteen thousand foot mountains of the Sierra and White mountain ranges, where Bob established himself as a country doctor for fifty-seven years. Dr. Denton is an accomplished story teller, and in this anecdotal autobiography he recounts fascinating tales stretching from his father's experiences growing up on a farm at the turn of the twentieth century to his own many adventures as a country doctor in the Eastern Sierra. Apart from their entertainment value, many of these stories are of considerable historical interest as well. From gun fights, plane crashes and backcountry rescues to tales of political intrigue, missionary work in exotic locales and accounts of the author's unique experiences as a traditional, do everything country doctor, this book captivates from start to finish.
