Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pages From a Garden Note-Book From Anton Tchekhov's Note-Book: 'A conversation on another planet about the earth a thousand years hence: "Do you remember that white tree - "' - "The London Mercury," January, 1921. What, O Man, shall God remember when the world of men is cold? All the anguish, all the violence, that have wracked it from of old? Be you not too sure; for haply when the troublers yet to come Like the dreaded Roman legions or the Tartar hordes are dumb, God shall see an ancient hill-top where an unremembered boy Laughed because the earth was lovely and to live and breathe was joy. - "The Scales" by Clifford Bax, from "A House of Words." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Seasons in the Garden Cess. The first thing to do is to grade the ground evenly. Most persons prefer a lawn that slopes away from house to road in an almost imperceptible incline of surface. Such a lawn is easier to make than a level one, be cause any little departure from a perfectly even surface Will be far less noticeable. To secure the necessary slope, ea1'th will have to be filled in near the house if the lot 18 a comparatively level one. Wherever there has been an exca vation made for the house-walls or a cellar, there Will generally be enough earth near the house to furnish all the filling needed in making the required slope. This soil, Which is almost always hard, should be worked over until it is as fine and mellow as possible, for a good lawn cannot be made from a coarse and lumpy soil. If the soil is not rich, it should be made so. I would advise the use of bone-meal in liberal quantity in preference to barn-yard fertilizer, because it never introduces the seeds of weeds into the lawn, as manure from the stables is very sure to do. Coarse bone-meal, in the pro portion of a half pound to each square yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Flower Garden: With Illustrative Notes It was written with a twofold object: to give in the smallest compass an outline history of English gardens, and to show once again what makes the true charm and happiness of a garden. Many - perhaps too partial - friends have urged me to reprint this article. They have reminded me that, when the immediate circulation of any one number of a Review has ceased, its articles are virtually lost and buried, and they assure me that there are readers who may not have already seen, and who would yet care to read, this Essay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a Garden to Bloom This Year The design to be employed for a garden planned for only one season is not so vital as the design which permanent planting de mands; nevertheless, it should be as good as it can be, under the limitations which the character Of the soil may impose, or which are imposed by unalterable condi tions. I speak of the soil conditions sep arately, for ordinary soil is alterable, up to a certain point, even within the limits of a single summer; but there are condi tions which may not be changed within so short a space of time - conditions of shade sometimes, or moisture, or dryness - and there are some imposed by absolutely unalterable physical peculiarities. The garden design, as well as the selection of the plants, must, therefore, conform to these, for even annuals have their prefer ences, which are worth considering and conceding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Come Into the Garden IT is appropriate to explain that in a book of this character there may be an appearance of inconsistency to the layman in the spelling of plant names. The nomenclature of Bailey's Encyclopcedia of Horticulture has been followed, however, with the exception of the capitaliza tion of the names when they appear apart from their botanical components. Personally, the author believes a page presents a more agree able appearance to the eye when the names of such plants as may be referred to thereon are not treated as proper names; and that it may be read with greater facility and a less disturbed sense of values as a consequence. For those desiring to pursue further reading or study along the lines of any particular chapter, a bibliog raphy of standard works dealing with each chap ter subject will be found at the back of the book, just before the Index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fragrant Note Book: Romance and Legend of the Flower Garden and the Bye-Way Wandering along the lanes and bye-ways of life, should you choose certain turns in their prescribed order you would find yourself (as it seems that you have) facing the modest little lodge of my dumb porter. He is dumb and he is ancient, and that of itself being unusual should prove to be interesting, since the aged are customarily garrulous; but he is a good chap withal and will come stumping to meet you from his little shelter which has a back and sides but is open in front. He calls it "The Bindings." The Arab has a saying that where he has struck flint to tinder and tinder to wood and the warming blaze has sprung up, there for the time being the son of Allah is at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Gardens and How to Make the Most of Them The irregular garden plan shown by Fig. 3 will appeal, I think, to the fancy of fewer gardeners, yet it has many good nowts. It gives the charm of mystery to many a walk and nook, while at the same time increasing the number of aspects, and therefore of possibilities. There is a substantial summerhouse in an ever green sheltered corner, which would prove useful also as a. Winter retreat if it could face south or south-west. Safe Rules for Laying out Walks. - Allow for approach to every bit of cultivated ground; give sufficient scope for pleasant pedestrian exercise, create as many new views as possible by turns and branches, yet avoid sacrificing ground unnecessarily. In Fig. 3 it will be seen that there is no path on one side of the lawn, as the flower border can be reached by the turf, and the flowers will look their best against it. A considerable amount of vegetable garden is allowed for, and there is a good rosery. One should always make new walks wide enough for comfort in walking, say a minimum width of 3 feet unless the garden is very small. Fig. 2 would prove more suitable than Fig. 1 for quite a small piece of ground, perhaps, but Fig. 3 could be simplified by making only one lawn and turning the distant grass into kitchen garden.
