Book excerpt: There is a narrow margin between pass and fail in the notably demanding Rapid Reporting component of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) Part 2B examination. This book provides readers with a comprehensive evaluation of paediatric radiographs, not only for those preparing for this examination but for all those who report them in their clinical practice. The overriding principle remains the same regardless of background – safe radiographic interpretation. Prospective candidates may have only had limited opportunity to report paediatric imaging, which may have been some time before they attempt the examination. Whilst other resources provide only a limited selection of paediatric radiographs, this book is solely dedicated to improving skill and knowledge in paediatric reporting. This text has been meticulously crafted to bridge any gaps in knowledge, while addressing deficiencies repeatedly identified in the FRCR Part 2B Examiners’ Reports in that “many candidates struggle with interpretation of paediatric imaging—even for common paediatric pathologies” and that “knowledge of normal appearances on paediatric plain images...was particularly poor in the Rapid Reporting”. This new edition has been extensively revised and contains 3 new tests. This unrivalled educational resource now comprises nearly 400 practice paediatric radiographs which is unique to the marketplace. The range of cases, from neonate to adolescent, deliver a sound knowledge of common paediatric fracture patterns and pathologies which enables readers to confidently differentiate between normal and abnormal. The much-lauded explanations accompanying these high-quality imaging tests remain robust and accurate, allowing candidates to maximise their preparation for all facets of the FRCR 2B examination and beyond. Foreword by Professor Derek Roebuck

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with a comprehensive evaluation of paediatric radiographs in preparation for the demanding Rapid Reporting component of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) Part 2B examination, where the margin between pass and fail is very narrow. While other resources may include only a handful of paediatric images in a practice reporting packet, this book is dedicated solely to improving paediatric reporting skill and knowledge. It is designed to address an important deficiency identified in the FRCR Part 2B Examiners’ Report, in that “many candidates struggle with interpretation of paediatric imaging – even for common paediatric pathologies”. The ten practice tests presented, each with 30 images, will assist readers not only in passing the examination but also in the real world when they have to report paediatric radiographs independently. The range of cases covered, from neonate to adolescent, delivers a sound knowledge of both common paediatric fracture patterns and patterns which are subtler but require a definitive answer as to whether they are normal or abnormal. Guidance is also provided on how to describe each abnormality.

Book excerpt: Get Through FRCR Part 2B: Rapid Reporting of Plain Radiographs fulfils a need for an exam style revision book to aid interpretation of plain radiographic films. Consisting of seven practice papers, each containing 30 high quality images, the material is arranged in a 'test' format. For each case, the reader is presented with one or more films and invited to make a diagnosis. As in the actual exam, some radiographs showing normal variants are interspersed with the pathology. At the end of each practice paper, the answers are given, together with useful hints and tips for the reader, including details to look out for in order to make a correct diagnosis. Written by specialists who have passed or who are embarking on the FRCR and who are now involved in teaching rapid reporting skills, Get Through FRCR Part 2B is primarily aimed at Radiology trainee registrars sitting the second part of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiology (FRCR) exams, but will also be useful for other medical practitioners, such as junior doctors working in the emergency department, or in surgery, orthopaedics and general medicine. In addition, it will appeal to radiographers training to report plain films, and to medical students.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough knowledge of normal radiological anatomy is necessary for detection and evaluation of pathological changes. In pediatric radiology, normal anatomy and normal proportions of anatomical structures may differ considerably from the adult, and may vary during growth. Therefore, in pediatric radiology there is a multitude of measurements, that in the individual patient is important, but that for the radiologist is not meaningful or even possible to keep in mind. This holds true both for the experienced pediatric radiologist, and for those who practise pediatric radiology only occasionally. This volume is written for both categories. In the literature, normal values are calculated and presented in many different ways, that are not always easy to compare, or easy to use in daily work. Therefore, we have revised and recalculated the data given by authors, in order to present the statistical upper and lower normal limits as between plus and minus two standard deviations (± 2SD). This means that about 2% of a normal population will be assessed as abnormally large and around 2% abnormally small with respect to the parameter assessed. In this way, the presentation throughout the book is uniform, and hopefully easy to use. All figures have been redrawn and computed in an attempt to make them as clear as possible.

Book excerpt: This book offers the reader sound advice on how to perform optimal conventional pediatric radiographs and how to obtain quick and easy organ dose estimates in order to improve the optimization process in pediatric imaging. Clear guidelines are provided for minimization of the radiation exposure of children through optimization of the radiation exposure conditions, and conversion coefficients are presented for calculation of the organ doses achieved in organs and tissues during conventional pediatric radiography, taking into consideration both optimal and suboptimal radiation field settings. Previously published conversion coefficients have failed to represent the variation in radiation field settings in daily clinical routine, which has made it difficult for the pediatric radiologist to estimate the impact of the field settings on absorbed doses in organs and tissues. The aim of this book, co-written by a pediatric radiologist, a physician and physicist, and a medical radiation technologist, is to address this issue by providing, for the first time, a thorough overview of clinical radiation field settings and their implications for radiation protection. An accompanying volume is devoted to fluoroscopy.

The same is true where imaging is concerned. The diagnostic strategies are different. The care prior to, during, and following the examination also differs from that of adults. This CME accredited Manual provides a comprehensive overview on the field of paediatric radiology and suggests imaging strategies for the most common clinical indications in children and adolescents.
