This book was released on 1994-03-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Padé presented his fundamental paper at the end of the last century, the studies on Padé's approximants only became significant in the second part of this century.Padé procedure is related to the theory of continued fractions, and some convergence theorems can be expressed only in terms of continued fractions. Further, Padé approximants have some advantages of practical applicability with respect to the continued-fraction theory. Moreover, as Chisholm notes, a given power series determines a set of approximants which are usually unique, whereas there are many ways of writing an associated continued fraction. The principal advantage of Padé approximants with respect to the generating Taylor series is that they provide an extension beyond the interval of convergence of the series.Padé approximants can be applied in many parts of fluid-dynamics, both in steady and in nonsteady flows, both in incompressible and in compressible regimes. This book is divided into four parts. The first one deals with the properties of the Padé approximants that are useful for the applications and illustrates, with the aid of diagrams and tables, the effectiveness of this technique in the field of applied mathematics. The second part recalls the basic equations of fluid-dynamics (those associated with the names of Navier-Stokes, Euler and Prandtl) and gives a quick derivation of them from the general balance equation. The third shows eight examples of the application of Padé approximants to steady flows, also taking into account the influence of the coupling of heat conduction in the body along which a fluid flows with conduction and convection in the fluid itself. The fourth part considers two examples of the application of Padé approximants to unsteady flows.

Book Synopsis Pade-legendre Method for Uncertainty Quantification with Fluid Dynamics Applications by : Tonkid Chantrasmi
Download or read book Pade-legendre Method for Uncertainty Quantification with Fluid Dynamics Applications written by Tonkid Chantrasmi and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The Pade-Legendre (PL) method, a novel approach for uncertainty quantification is introduced. The proposed method uses a rational function expansion and is designed to effectively characterize uncertainties in strongly non-linear or discontinuous systems. The discontinuities can be either in the underlying functions (inherent discontinuities) or from lack of sufficient data resolution (multi-scale discontinuities). In the former case, PL method can produce an accurate response surface without spurious oscillations and does not require prior knowledge of the discontinuities. For the latter type of discontinuities, the PL method can help reduce the number of deterministic simulations required to accurately represent the response surface. If sufficient data resolution is achieved, the PL method degenerates to standard polynomial reconstruction. The present approach is illustrated in a number of applications as an uncertainty propagation technique. Moreover, the method is applied to an inference problem in which a sharp discontinuity in the system input is present. The PL method shows a considerable improvement over the traditional approach when discontinuities are present. In addition, an ongoing effort called the UQ Experiment in which we used the PL method to help design the experimental setup is discussed.

Book Synopsis Approximation Theory by : Carl De Boor
Download or read book Approximation Theory written by Carl De Boor and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986-12-31 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this book, first presented at a 1986 AMS Short Course, give a brief introduction to approximation theory and some of its current areas of active research, both theoretical and applied. The first lecture describes and illustrates the basic concerns of the field. Topics highlighted in the other lectures include the following: approximation in the complex domain, $N$-width, optimal recovery, interpolation, algorithms for approximation, and splines, with a strong emphasis on a multivariate setting for the last three topics. The book is aimed at mathematicians interested in an introduction to areas of current research and to engineers and scientists interested in exploring the field for possible applications to their own fields. The book is best understood by those with a standard first graduate course in real and complex analysis, but some of the presentations are accessible with the minimal requirements of advanced calculus and linear algebra.

Book Synopsis Exact Constants in Approximation Theory by : Nikolaĭ Pavlovich Korneĭchuk
Download or read book Exact Constants in Approximation Theory written by Nikolaĭ Pavlovich Korneĭchuk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-06-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a self-contained introduction for non-specialists, or as a reference work for experts, to the particular area of approximation theory that is concerned with exact constants. The results apply mainly to extremal problems in approximation theory, which in turn are closely related to numerical analysis and optimization. The book encompasses a wide range of questions and problems: best approximation by polynomials and splines; linear approximation methods, such as spline-approximation; optimal reconstruction of functions and linear functionals. Many of the results are based on deep facts from analysis and function theory, such as duality theory and comparison theorems; these are presented in chapters 1 and 3. In keeping with the author's intention to make the book as self-contained as possible, chapter 2 contains an introduction to polynomial and spline approximation. Chapters 4 to 7 apply the theory to specific classes of functions. The last chapter deals with n-widths and generalises some of the ideas of the earlier chapters. Each chapter concludes with commentary, exercises and extensions of results. A substantial bibliography is included. Many of the results collected here have not been gathered together in book form before, so it will be essential reading for approximation theorists.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Clad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van Gu!ik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are and prediction and electrical engineering can such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.

Download or read book Pade and Rational Approximation written by E.B. Safe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Padé and Rational Approximation: Theory and Applications presents the proceedings of the Conference on Rational Approximation with Emphasis on Applications of Padé Approximants, held in Tampa, Florida on December 15-17, 1976. The contributors focus on the interplay of theory, computation, and physical applications. This book is composed of six parts encompassing 44 chapters. The introductory part discusses the general theory of orthogonal polynomials that is the mathematical basis of Padé approximants and related matters evaluation. This text also examines the connection between approximants on a stepline in the ordinary Padé table and certain continued fractions and the convergence of diagonal Padé approximants to a class of functions with an even number of branch points. The following parts deal with the special functions and continued fractions of Padé approximation and the theory of rational approximations. These parts also investigate the geometric convergence of Chebyshev rational approximation on the half line, the optimal approximation by "Almost Classical interpolation, and the incomplete polynomials approximation. The discussion then shifts to the physical applications and computations of the Padé approximants. The concluding part presents the applications of rational approximation to gun fire control and to the White Sands Missile Range Computer Facility. This part also provides a list of some open problems and conjectures concerning polynomials and rational functions. This book is of great benefit to mathematicians, physicists, and laboratory workers.
