Book Synopsis Tourism in Pacific Islands by : Stephen Pratt
Download or read book Tourism in Pacific Islands written by Stephen Pratt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Island Countries have been shown to be especially vulnerable to such external influences as natural disasters, political unrest and downturns in the global economy and their tourism industries have been notably affected. In particular, they typically have a narrow resource base and a fragile and often vulnerable natural environment. While there is some research on islands and small states, there is a dearth of information on the South Pacific and very little research is being undertaken in the region compared to other geographical regions in the world. This volume brings together current work in Pacific Island tourism. In this collection, three main themes arise: Images of the South Pacific; Socio-economic Impacts of Tourism; and Pacific Island Countries and the Outside World. The first focus is on the question of image, namely, stereotypes of a destination held by tourists and potential tourists, the extent to which residents, for their part, really welcome visitors, and the role tourism might play in changing pre-established images. The second theme is tourism's impacts, notably the economic and socio-cultural effects of international tourism's intrusion in the region which, though often hotly debated, have attracted relatively little empirical research. The third focus is on the challenges of how PICs articulate with their external geo-political and physical environment. These involve existing relations with formal colonial centres, geographical isolation, the need for greater air access to the outside world and for more tourists, and the continuing threat to several PICs of global warming, which increased air travel will inevitably exacerbate. This text will be of interest to tourism students, researchers and academics in the fields of tourism, development studies and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Crisis Management in the Tourism Industry by : Peter Hosie
Download or read book Crisis Management in the Tourism Industry written by Peter Hosie and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important challenge facing tourism is the anticipation of the threat of crises precipitated by natural and people-made catastrophes, and being adequately prepared for them. Despite an increase in research on this issue there is still a considerable lack of clarity on the impacts of crises on the tourism industry. Illustrated by a range of international case studies, this book provides a systematic and conceptual approach to questions such as how tourism businesses prepare for and react to crisis, which measures are taken and what impact they have, and which strategies can be employed to overcome them. By discussing, analyzing and synthesizing the literature on crisis management, the authors question how business can become more proactive in preparing and dealing with crises in the tourism industry.

Book Synopsis Tourism and Sustainability by : Martin Mowforth
Download or read book Tourism and Sustainability written by Martin Mowforth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If unequal opportunities are large within many countries they are truly staggering on a global scale", so concludes the World Bank’s 2006 World Development Report. It is a global unevenness within which the barriers to in-migration of Third World migrants to wealthy first world nations go ever higher, whilst the barriers to travel in the reverse direction are all but extinct. So how exactly can tourism contribute to narrowing this glaring inequality and gap between the rich and the poor? Are ever expanding tourism markets – and the new, responsible, forms of tourism in particular – a smoke free, socio-culturally sensitive form of human industrialisation? Is alternative tourism really a credible lever for lifting poverty stricken countries out of the mire of global inequality, setting them on the right track to ‘development’, and making poverty history? Tourism and Sustainability critically explores and challenges what have emerged as the most significant universal geopolitical norms of the last half century – development, globalization and sustainability – and through the lens of new forms of tourism demonstrates how we can better understand and get to grips with the rapidly changing new global order. This third edition has been extensively updated and includes new material on: poverty reduction, livelihoods and pro-poor tourism new forms of tourism in cities continuing growth of the fair trade movement tourism’s contribution to climate change volunteer and ‘gap’ tourism affect of disasters on new tourism. Drawing on a range of examples from across the Third World, Tourism and Sustainability illustrates the social, economic and environmental conditions for the growth of new tourism. The book is original in its assessment of tourism through the lens of power – who holds it; how it is used; and who benefits from the exercise of power in the tourism industry. Additionally, the analysis is an interdisciplinary one and the book will therefore be useful to students of Human Geography, Environmental Sciences and Studies, Politics, Development Studies, Anthropology and Business Studies as well as Tourism itself.
