Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Third Asia-Pacific Conference on Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technologies, Hong Kong, 3-6 December 2000 by : Xijun Hu
Download or read book Proceedings of the Third Asia-Pacific Conference on Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technologies, Hong Kong, 3-6 December 2000 written by Xijun Hu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid expansion of the Asia-Pacific economy in the last decade and the recovery after the recent crisis, severe demands will be placed on energy services and the environment. Coping with the volatile oil prices that persist in the market introduces an additional factor into the energy supply and demand equation, not just for countries in this region but also worldwide. Inevitably there will be implications for environmental issues too. The future will see a continuing challenge to balance growth with sustainability in the economic, social and environmental sectors. This conference, a sequel to the immensely successful APCSEET conferences held in Singapore and Australia, is aimed at meeting that challenge by addressing the pertinent issues related to sustainable energy and environmental protection. It provides a forum for participants from academia, industry and government agencies to interact, report on research in progress, and identify opportunities in the fields of sustainable energy and environmental technologies. The presentations include not only technical issues such as air pollution control, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, renewable energy and cleaner production, but also education and policy issues.

Download or read book Biofilm Systems IV written by F. Rogalla and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade biofilm systems have made staggering progress. With adaptation of the process to nitrogen removal, trickling filters have become an economical alternative to activated sludge, enabling the upgrading of thousands of plants. Better understanding of rotating biological contractors has made them a preferred technology for small-scale plants, and there is growing use of biological aerated filters, especially in small-footprint nitrogen removal. High-rate fluidised bed or airlift reactors, both anaerobic and aerobic, with and without carriers, have shown their efficiency in several hundred industrial applications, leading to applications in municipal treatment. Moving bed biofilm reactors now compete with hybrid systems for upgrading existing activated sludge basins. The biofilm conference also brings together professionals studying clean water aspects of biofilms with those applying them to wastewater reactors. While the latter use the growth of fixed bacteria to optimise the efficiency of treatment systems, the former aim to combat formation of biofilms in distribution networks. But many tools for analysis and modelling can be shared, and the knowledge of what favours biofilm growth and performance can be used to inhibit their occurrence. These proceedings offer an unrivalled authoritative collection of current work worldwide on the research, development and application of biofilm systems.
Book Synopsis Improvement of the Ozonation Process Through the Use of Static Mixers by : C. Mysore
Download or read book Improvement of the Ozonation Process Through the Use of Static Mixers written by C. Mysore and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the known disinfectants, ozone has been demonstrated to be very effective in inactivating protozoans. Current and proposed regulations impose additional treatment requirements for Cryptosporidium parvum. These regulatory trends tend to place more stringent performance demands on disinfection systems and have therefore increased the need for improvements in the design. The static mixer offers one alternative method for improving the efficiency of the dissolution of ozone and optimizing its use in the disinfection process. The overall objective of this research was to quantify the potential benefits of ozone application through the use of static mixers in terms of increased transfer efficiency, disinfection capacity, and enhanced chemical reactions at laboratory-, pilot-, and full-scale systems. Specific goals were to identify and quantify the effect of several water quality parameters and environmental/engineered factors on the disinfection capacity of the ozone-static mixer system and assess bromate formation under optimum conditions for microbial inactivation.Originally published by AwwaRF for its subscribers in 2003 This publication can also be purchased and downloaded via Pay Per View on Water Intelligence Online - click on the Pay Per View icon below
Book Synopsis Removal of Humic Substances from Water by : Hallvard Ødegaard
Download or read book Removal of Humic Substances from Water written by Hallvard Ødegaard and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 1999 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humic substances are naturally occurring organic material, derived from earth and plants, that cause a yellow-brown colouration to water; they are particular problem in water supplies in areas such as Scandinavia, with high humidity and temperatures around freezing, where supplies originating in moorland drainage are important. There are three main groups of reasons for treatment when such waters are to be used for drinking water purposes: aesthetic and organoleptic (sensory); health-related; and practical and economic reasons. All these factors informed a highly successful specialised conference from which these proceedings were selected. Researchers and practitioners involved with the problem of humic substances in water will find these proceedings an essential state-of-the-art reference to this subject. The 32 papers selected here cover the work of many of the world's leading experts, with a wide range of traditional and more innovative approaches to humics removal: Problem identification and overviews Coagulation-separation processes Membrane filtration processes Oxidation/biofiltration processes Sorption processes Humics removal by underground filtration Case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide that positive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution – air, water, soil, and noise. Since pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unreal- tic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identi?ed: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers formulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to speci?c pollution p- blems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental engineering and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.
