Book excerpt: The issue of iron-sulfide degradation in concrete aggregates has proven to be a major problem in concrete infrastructure, causing insufficient concrete durability and extensive structural damages which include expansion, cracking, and popouts. Over the years, there have been various reports of iron-sulfide minerals like pyrite and pyrrhotite causing oxidation reactions and leading to extensive residential concrete foundation damage in Connecticut and Quebec, Canada. In many of these cases, damages have been so serious to the structural integrity of the structures that immediate remediation has been required to repair the deterioration. The issue is not well documented despite reports of damage in the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe. Currently, there are limited existing standardized testing methods or mitigation strategies for the presence of iron-sulfide minerals in concrete aggregates because the mechanisms by which degradation occurs are not fully understood. The objective of this research is to experimentally measure the kinetics of iron-sulfide oxidation reactions in dissolution systems with oxidizing agents and analyze existing dissolution rate data available to assist in determining the factors that influence the deterioration of aggregates used in concrete infrastructure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques of performing applied mineralogy investigations, and applications and capabilities of recently developed instruments for measuring mineral properties are explored in this book intended for practicing applied mineralogists, students in mineralogy and metallurgy, and mineral processing engineers. The benefits of applied mineralogy are presented by using in-depth applied mineralogy studies on base metal ores, gold ores, porphyry copper ores, iron ores and industrial minerals as examples. The chapter on base metal ores includes a discussion on the effects of liberation, particle sizes and surfaces coatings of Pb, Cu, Fe, Ca and So4- on the recoveries of sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. The chapter on gold discusses various methods of determining the quantities of gold in different minerals, including 'invisible' gold in pyrite and arsenopyrite, so that a balance of the distribution of gold among the minerals can be calculated. This book also discusses the roles of pyrite, oxygen, moisture and bacterial (thiobacillus ferrooxidans) on reactions that produce acidic drainage from tailings piles, and summarizes currently used and proposed methods of remediation of acidic drainage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomining is the use of microorganisms in the recovery of metals from ores. During bioleaching, metals such as copper, nickel or zinc are oxidized through microbial action from the water-insoluble sulfide to the soluble sulfate forms. Although gold is inert to microbial action, microbes can also be used in gold recovery from certain types of ores because as they oxidize the ore, they open up its structure, thereby allowing a gold-solubilizing agent such as cyanide to penetrate the ore. The book describes several industrial bioleaching and biooxidation processes as well as the underlying theory and biology of the microbes involved.

This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterially catalyzed reactions are important in geochemical cycling of large variety elements such as Fe, S, 0 and C. Sulfide mineral oxidation is widespread in many different environments and also regulates the global cycling of 0, S and Fe. Furthennore, oxidation of metal sulfide minerals cause environmental problems known as acid mine drainage (AMD). Since AMD environments contain high concentration of metals and affect aquatic ecosystems, remediation of these environments is vital and requires an understanding of oxidation mechanism of slilfide minerals. it is widely accepted that oxidation of sulfide minerals is often mediated by bacterial reactions. The Fe(ll) and sulfide oxidizing bacterium, Acidilhiobacillus ferrooxidans, is commonly found in AMD sites. Understanding the mechanism and bacterial contribution to metal sulfide oxidation may assist with developing proper remediation strategies for AMD sites and contribute to our understanding of slilfur and oxygen cycle in ancient and modem environments. ., My doctoral studies ex8:111ined the bacterial inf1uence on the oxidation of sulfide minerals at pH
