Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the second and final volume of Reactions of Coordinated Ligands, describes the chemistry of ligands bound through non-carbon atoms, and of coordinated carbon dioxide. As before, emphasis is on the underlying mechanisms, which provide a unity of understanding for superficially disparate processes. The wide range of topics covered illustrates well both the versatility and the usefulness of coordination chemistry in the controlled activation of ligands. Looking to the future, carbon dioxide is the feedstock of last resort. The homogeneous reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia now seems unlikely to replace the Haber process, but solution reactions also lead to more complex, varied, and valuable products. Nitrogen monoxide, a "non innocent" ligand, impinges as pollutant and reagent. Its rich chemistry stems from its linked roles as three-electron donor, and as extremely powerful -acceptor. In the hydrolysis and condensation of complexed amides, esters etc. , metals act both as templates and as tunable and poly functional Lewis acids. Here the control of hydrophobic and steric interactions begins to model the subtle mechanisms of biological specificity. Finally, phosphorus and sulfur are imporant both as ligand atoms in themselves, and as anchors for other functionalities. I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the writing and production of this work, and also my colleagues old and new, at Glasgow and the University of North Texas, for their support. Book excerpt: Metal complexes play important roles as catalysts or other participants in synthetic and biological reactions. Substrates and sometimes attacking reagents also are activated through coordination with metal atoms or ions. In these events the natures not only of the central metals but also of ancillary ligands exert important influences on the stability and reactivity of the coordinated substrates. A ligand in general can adopt various coordination modes depending on its chemical environment, thus functioning as a probe. The number of coordination modes increases with increasing complexity of the ligand. In this book it is shown that even the simplest mono- and diatomic ligands such as H, CO, and N2 exhibit a variety of coordination modes, which are related to their reactions. The thiocyanate anion is taken up as a representative of the triatomic ambidentate ligands, and factors influencing the preferences for N- und S-bonding are summarized. Coordination chemistry of ß-dicarbonyl compounds is a highlight of this book. Acetylacetone, one of the most familiar Werner ligands, is shown to favor -carbon and n-allylic bonding in many instances. Its versatile behaviour in changing coordination modes is revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unsaturated transition metal complexes are important in many stoichiometric and catalytic bond cleavage reactions. Therefore, low-coordinate transition metal complexes coordinated with sterically hindered ancillary ligands have been used for C-H activation, N2, and CO bond cleavage reactions. In this thesis, the coordination chemistry and reactivity of low-coordinate [beta]-diketiminate cobalt and iron complexes toward bond-breaking and bond-making reactions is explored and presented. In chapter 2, the unsaturated complex LtBuCo (LtBu = bulky [beta]-diketiminate ligand) is reported. The [beta]-diketiminate ligand in LtBuCo was ligated to cobalt in a slipped [kappa]N, [eta]6-arene mode. Addition of Lewis bases to LtBuCo yielded rapid and reversible conversion to the [kappa]2N, N' mode. The rate law of ligand binding to LtBuCo was first-order in both cobalt and substrate concentration. Therefore, ligand coordination was consistent with an associative or interchange mechanism that either preceded or occurred simultaneously to [beta]-diketiminate isomerization. In addition, LtBuCo cleaved Sn-F and aryl C-F bonds, and homolytic Sn-F bond cleavage yielded [LtBuCo([mu]-F)]2. Aryl C-F bond cleavage by LtBuCo yielded [LtBuCo([mu]-F)]2 and a cobalt(II) aryl complex in a 1:2 molar ratio. [LtBuCo([mu]-F)]2 reacted with triethylsilane (Et3SiH) to give pure hydride complex [LtBuCo([mu]-H)]2, which has different properties than previously reported. In chapter 3, treatment of LMeFeNNFeLMe with 4-tert-butylpyridine (tBupy) displaced the dinitrogen ligand to give LMeFe(tBupy)2 which is formally iron(I). However, LMeFe(tBupy)2 can be defined as high-spin iron(I) with a resonance form that is high-spin iron(II) antiferromagnetically coupled to a radical on the tBupy ligand. In contrast, treatment of LMeFeNNFeLMe with pyridine (py) resulted in the reductive coupling of pyridine via C-C bond formation to give {LMeFepy}2([mu]-C10H10N2), a complex with a bridging 4,4'-bis(hydridopyridyl) ligand. {LMeFepy}2([mu]-C10H10N2) was diiron(II) in the solid state, but C-C bond formation was rapidly reversible as the solution properties were consistent with LMeFe(py)2. Chapter 4 reports new synthetic routes to iron hydride complexes with higher purity than previously achieved. The binuclear oxidative addition of H2 to a transient iron(I) intermediate yielded [LtBuFe([mu]-H)]2. This method was adapted for the synthesis of [LMeFe([mu]-H)]2, and the deuterated isotopologues, [LtBuFe([mu]-D)]2 and [LMeFe([mu]-D)]2, were synthesized using D2. The H/D exchange of hydride ligands between isotopologues and H2/D2 was observed"--Page ix-x.

Book excerpt: A series of new 1.5-dimethyI-6-oxo-verdazyl radicals was prepared bearing substituents such as 2-pyridyl, 2.2'-bipyridyl, and 2.2'-bipyrimidine, among others, in the 3 position of the verdazyl ring, generating a viable family of new open-shell chelating ligands. All verdazyl radical precursors (including aldehydes and tetrazanes) were characterized using elemental analysis, MS, 1H/13C NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies. The radicals were obtained by oxidation of the tetrazane precursors with benzoquinone. NalO4, or K3Fe(CN)6, and were isolated in pure crystalline form (in two cases as 1:1 molecular complexes with the hydroquinone reaction by-product) or as powders. Crystalline radicals exhibited indefinite stability to ambient conditions, but the radicals obtained as powders were immediately characterized and used in subsequent coordination reactions as a result of decomposition. All verdazyl radicals were characterized by EPR, UV-visible, FT-IR spectroscopies, and high-resolution MS. In selected cases, variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data were obtained and fairly strong intermolecular antiferromagnetic interactions were observed. Based on structural and magnetic data, as well as DFT calculations, we postulate a new intermolecular exchange mechanism for organic solids analogous to metal-oxide-based superexchange. A wide-variety of homoleptic and heteroleptic mono- and bimetallic coordination complexes with diamagnetic and paramagnetic transition metal salts were prepared with the verdazyl ligands described above. Metal-verdazyl complexes were structurally characterized, in many cases using X-ray crystallography, and in all cases by elemental analysis, and by MS, FT-IR, and UV-visible spectroscopies. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data indicated very strong ferromagnetic intramolecular nickel(II)-verdazyl exchange coupling in a wide-range of complexes (JNi-vd ranging from +35 to ≥ +240 cm-1). Antiferromagnetic manganese(11)-verdazyl exchange was observed in a number of complexes, generally around -50 cm-1 in magnitude. Exchange couplings between verdazyls and nickel(II) or manganese(II) centres was rationalized with established molecular orbital symmetry arguments. Cobalt(II)-verdazyl exchange coupling was tentatively assigned as ferromagnetic, however, no quantitative conclusions were drawn owing to other complications associated with cobalt(II) magnetochemistry. coupling through diamagnetic zinc(II) and copper(I) metals between coordinated verdazyls was weakly antiferromagnetic in all cases. Ruthenium(II)-verdazyl complexes were prepared as mimics of well known Ru(bipy)3 2+ complexes and the electronic properties (including absorption and emission spectroscopy, EPR, and CV) of these complexes were investigated. Interesting absorption features, including CT transitions between ruthenium(Il) centres and verdazyl ligands, and weak emission upon excitation into the ruthenium(II)-bipy CT band, were observed from these complexes at room temperature. Complicated EPR spectra were obtained from selected ruthenium(II)-verdazyl complexes, suggesting some interaction with the ruthenium(ll) centre, but no quantitative conclusions were drawn. CV data suggest facile verdazyl reductions and oxidative stability of the verdazyl ligand in selected complexes.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II, Nine Volume Set reviews and examines topics of relevance to today’s inorganic chemists. Covering more interdisciplinary and high impact areas, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II includes biological inorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, materials chemistry, and nanoscience. The work is designed to follow on, with a different viewpoint and format, from our 1973 work, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry, edited by Bailar, Emeléus, Nyholm, and Trotman-Dickenson, which has received over 2,000 citations. The new work will also complement other recent Elsevier works in this area, Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry and Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry, to form a trio of works covering the whole of modern inorganic chemistry. Chapters are designed to provide a valuable, long-standing scientific resource for both advanced students new to an area and researchers who need further background or answers to a particular problem on the elements, their compounds, or applications. Chapters are written by teams of leading experts, under the guidance of the Volume Editors and the Editors-in-Chief. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource for information in the field. The chapters will not provide basic data on the elements, which is available from many sources (and the original work), but instead concentrate on applications of the elements and their compounds. Provides a comprehensive review which serves to put many advances in perspective and allows the reader to make connections to related fields, such as: biological inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, solid state chemistry and nanoscience Inorganic chemistry is rapidly developing, which brings about the need for a reference resource such as this that summarise recent developments and simultaneously provide background information Forms the new definitive source for researchers interested in elements and their applications; completely replacing the highly cited first edition, which published in 1973

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inorganic Substances is complementary in its approach to conventional inorganic chemistry textbooks. Written with the undergraduate in mind, it gives an introduction to descriptive inorganic chemistry, a systematic survey of the chemistry of the elements according to the Periodic Classification. In this way, the reader acquires a firm grasp of the principles which underlie which inorganic substances can be made, their preparations, structures, chemical reactions and physical properties. The book presents theory as a background to the facts of inorganic chemistry, rather than as an end in itself. It does not concentrate on structural detail or reaction mechanisms but stresses the interplay between thermodynamic and kinetic considerations in understanding stability. The ways in which the various theories of structure and bonding are related are thoroughly dealt with throughout. The approach of this book makes it a useful companion to any intermediate inorganic chemistry course. It should also be useful to other science students, especially earth and material scientists who need a good grounding in modern inorganic chemistry.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural and electronic properties of metal complexes with isoindoline-based redox-active ligands and the ability of these ligands to stabilize unusual oxidation states was investigated. Two types of redox-active ligands were examined: phthalocyanines (Pc) and bis(2-pyridylimino)isoindolines also known as lobsterates (Lb). In contrast to the ancillary or spectator ligands more commonly used in coordination chemistry, redox-active ligands can exist in a range of oxidation states. Additionally, the chemical inertness of the Pc ligand could be used to develop new catalysts where the Pc ligand can stabilize a highly reactive metal centre and also act as an electron reservoir in a catalytic cycle. With this in mind, the reduction of trichloro(phthalocyanato)niobium(V) was performed with various reducing agents in order to study the bond activating ability of the reduced species and to determine the crystal structure of the reduced products. C-O bond activation of ether-type solvents suggests that the Pc ligand is able to withstand bond activation from a highly reduced niobium centre while, at the same time, allowing the niobium centre to activate the C-O bonds of the solvent. NbPc complexes containing Pc(4-) ligands were structurally characterized. A reduced MgPc complex containing a Pc(3-) ligand was also structurally characterized. A report of gold(II) Pc and the ability of Pc to stabilize gold in an unusual, paramagnetic +2 oxidation state was re-investigated. Attempts to synthesize soluble versions of AuPc as well as the original AuPc did not produce the desired gold(II) products and only diamagnetic gold(III) Pcs were obtained. An unprecedented, ring- contracted gold(III) Pc analogue was discovered and structurally characterized in the process of these studies. A series of three new 5,6-substituted Lb ligands were synthesized and the redox properties of these ligands in copper(II) acetate complexes were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. The reductions of the copper acetate Lb complexes were not chemically reversible. The 2,6-diisopropylphenoxy-substituted Lb copper acetate complexes formed acetate-bridged 1-D chains. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry suggests that the Cu centres are very weakly antiferromagnetically coupled.
