Book excerpt: TreeTops True Stories are exciting, motivating non-fiction books which will broaden your pupils' reading experience. They are part of a structured reading programme for juniors. This title takes even further some of the issues explored in I Runned Away to Sea. The setting is the Indian carpet-weaving trade in contemporary times. This compares favourably with the historical example in I Runned as it is very important for children to be aware that childhood slavery still occurs. It is the story of Sanjay, who is sold into bonded labour by his uncle. He befriends a small, helpless little boy called Bapi who carries a burning desire to see his mother again, but can only remember fragments about her. Sanjay and Bapi are eventually discovered and rescued, but the question is whether the tiny Bapi will be able to recall enough information to help in the search for his mother. It is a heart-rending story that does have a happy outcome, but contains some important lessons for children to learn about the injustices meted out to their peers in other countries. This book is also available as part of a mixed pack of 6 different books or a class pack of 36 books of the same Oxford Reading Tree stage. Each book pack comes with a free copy of invaluable teaching notes.

Book excerpt: TreeTops True Stories are exciting, motivating non-fiction books which will broaden your pupils' reading experience. They are part of a structured reading programme for juniors. In the plethora of imagery surrounding the American Wild West, we are used to the heroes of cowboy films and the stuff of legends like Dances with Wolves being portrayed exclusively as white colonisers. Here is a story of a real character who was half African-American, being born to a slave mother and white land-owning father. James Tomahawk Beckwourth has rightly been claimed as a black hero in America, and yet the first Hollywood movie about him saw him played by a white actor! He led a colourful and adventure-packed life, and this story is retold in the first person with photos and beautiful artwork of the flora and fauna of untamed America. This book is also available as part of a mixed pack of 6 different books or a class pack of 36 books of the same Oxford Reading Tree stage. Book excerpt: TreeTops True Stories are exciting, motivating non-fiction books which will broaden your pupils' reading experience. They are part of a structured reading programme for juniors. This is a very moving story about a young boy in Victorian times, who is press-ganged into going to sea. The grammatical error in the title is a talking point in itself, as it is derived from his letter home where he tries to account for his actions. Walter Claridge soon learns that he has been betrayed into giving up his freedom to become no better than a slave in a frightening world of heaving seas, cruel masters, and the loss of his only friend. The story does have a happy outcome for Walter, but should serve as a useful illustration of a depiction of Victorian childhood that is not often known.

The story of Judy Garland's (Frances Gumm's) early years up until the point where she is made world famous upon the release of the phenomenally successful The Wizard of Oz. Almost all children will be familiar with this film, and recognise the almost iconographic image on the cover. However, what they might not realise is the struggle, pain and determination that the young Frances Gumm went through in order to achieve her fame. The relationship with her domineering mother, adoring sisters and the early death of her beloved father are all explored. What emerges is a tale that might seem like everyone's dream of the bright lights and gilded hall of fame, but in reality was to rob the young star of a proper childhood and chance of long-term happiness. Book excerpt: TreeTops True Stories are exciting, motivating non-fiction books which will broaden your pupils' reading experience. They are part of a structured reading programme for juniors. At some indeterminate time before the events of September 11th 2001, an eight-year old boy and his donkey, called Baby, make the hazardous journey from Afghanistan over the Khyber Pass to Peshawar in Pakistan. This is very much a coming-of-age tale that is based on the true story of a real little boy who did just what the story tells. In the current climate, this is a very telling narrative that is set in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, without it being political in any sense. The story will draw children into the adventure that the boy undertakes to his new home, and help them to empathise with the courage, fortitude and determination that he shows to protect his beloved 'Baby'. A very direct and personal account of events surrounding the grounding, and subsequent breaking up of the Sea Empress in Milford Haven, Wales in February 1996. Ceri is a fictional 10-year old girl who takes us through the events as she writes her diary. However, the disaster itself and its aftermath are very real and Ceri is representative of many children whose families whole way of life was almost destroyed. Photos and captions combine with the touchingly naïve artwork style of new OUP illustrator, Karen Edward. Book excerpt: Recently vilified as the prime dynamic driving home the breach between poor and rich nations, here the branding process is rehabilitated as a potential saviour of the economically underprivileged. Brand New Justice, now in a revised paperback edition, systematically analyses the success stories of the Top Thirteen nations, demonstrating that their wealth is based on the 'last mile' of the commercial process: buying raw materials and manufacturing cheaply in third world countries, these countries realise their lucrative profits by adding value through finishing, packaging and marketing and then selling the branded product on to the end-user at a hugely inflated price. The use of sophisticated global media techniques alongside a range of creative marketing activities are the lynchpins of this process. Applying his observations on economic history and the development and impact of global marketing, Anholt presents a cogent plan for developing nations to benefit from globalization. So long the helpless victim of capitalist trading systems, he shows that they can cross the divide and graduate from supplier nation to producer nation. Branding native produce on a global scale, making a commercial virtue out of perceived authenticity and otherness and fully capitalising on the 'last mile' benefits are key to this graduation and fundamental to forging a new global economic balance. Anholt argues with a forceful logic, but also backs his hypothesis with enticing glimpses of this process actually beginning to take place. Examining activities in India, Thailand, Russia and Africa among others, he shows the risks, challenges and pressures inherent in 'turning the tide', but above all he demonstrates the very real possibility of enlightened capitalism working as a force for good in global terms.
