Book Synopsis Dividend Policy and Corporate Governance by : Luis Correia da Silva
Download or read book Dividend Policy and Corporate Governance written by Luis Correia da Silva and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-02-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dividends are not only a signal about a firm's prospects under asymmetric information, but they can also act as a corporate governance device to align the management's interests with those of the shareholders. Dividend Policy and Corporate Governance is the first comprehensive volume on the relationship between dividend policy and corporate governance, and examines in detail empirical studies and current theories. Reviewing the interactions between dividend policy and other corporate governance mechanisms, it compares results for the UK and the US with those for other countries such as France, Germany, and Japan, and provides new empirical evidence on corporate governance in continental Europe and its impact on dividends. Focusing on one of the main representatives of this system, Germany, it highlights major differences between the dividend policies of German firms and those of UK or US firms. Conventional wisdom states that German dividends are lower than UK or US dividends, yet on a published-profits basis the exact converse is true. In addition, the authors demonstrate a link between corporate control structures and dividend payouts, report evidence that the existence of a loss is an additional determinant of dividend changes, and demonstrate that the tax status of the controlling shareholder and the firm's dividend payout are not linked. The conclusions reached in this book have important implications for the current debate on corporate governance, making it invaluable for academics, finance professionals, regulators, and legal advisors.

Political Corruption and Corporate Finance is the first attempt to scrutinize the effect of political corruption on corporate finance. It provides readers with a comprehensive overview of corruption-related issues and theoretical and empirical studies in corporate finance. This book summarizes the causes and effects of political corruption as well as anti-corruption mechanisms and initiatives; analyzes how political corruption at both state and local levels determines corporate financial decisions (investment, financing, and dividend); and discusses how the corruption environment determines firm-level financial behavior. The first three chapters of the book introduce political corruption, the status of political corruption, and anti-corruption campaigns around the world. The last three chapters focus on how firms make financial decisions, and the role of political corruption in corporate finance. By summarizing real problems and results from academic research, this work will help readers to understand how the corruption environment determines firm-level financial behavior.

Book Synopsis The Saudi Arabian Economy by : Mohamed A. Ramady
Download or read book The Saudi Arabian Economy written by Mohamed A. Ramady and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-05 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saudi Arabian economy has changed almost beyond recognition since the oil boom days of the 1980s, and the Kingdom itself has changed too economically, socially, and demographically. In the second edition of The Saudi Arabian Economy, Mohamed Ramady uses several overlapping themes to establish and develop a framework for studying the fundamental challenges to the Saudi economy. Particular attention is paid to the benefits of short-term planning and long-term diversification intended to shield the economy from potentially de-stabilizing oil price fluctuations and the pace and diversity of domestic reforms. The author examines the core strengths and evolution of various financial institutions and the Saudi stock market in the face of globalization, before analyzing the private sector in detail. Topics discussed include: • The hydrocarbon and minerals sector, including the emergence of the competitive petrochemical sector • The impact of small and medium sized businesses and the evolving role of “family” businesses • The growing role of women in the Saudi economy • The role of privatization and FDI as engines of change and the position of public-private-partnerships • The establishment of a foundation for a knowledge-based economy Finally, the author offers an analysis of the key challenges facing the Saudi economy, paying particular attention to the potential costs and benefits of globalization, and membership in the WTO. Employment, education, economic and social stability, and Saudi Arabia’s place in the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as Saudi Arabia’s evolving strategic economic relations with China and other countries are offered as keys to the consensus building needed to ensure the Kingdom’s healthy economic future.

Their importance for the German economy is indisputable. Most of them are global market leaders in their niches and are considered to be a force for innovation in the German economy. The ability to be innovative in niche markets has been identified as the antecedent of their strong, or even dominant, competitive positions in their industries. The driver of this innovation success may well be the family, which distinguishes family firms from non-family firms. But how can a family influence innovation in a family firm and does this influence have only positive effects? This dissertation focuses on the impact of top management teams on innovations interacting with family firm-specific characteristics.
