Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains a selection of papers presented at the Xlth World Congress of Fertility and Sterility (Dublin, 1983); the central theme is ovarian function and treatment of its disorders. Cross-cultural research provides international congresses with their unique quality due to the world-wide exchange of views; we think this aim has been achieved and reflected in this book. During the past decade significant advances have been made in our understanding of the events surrounding human ovulation leading to the development of an increasing range of effective therapeutic agents and the more logical use of existing drugs. As a result infertile patients with disordered ovulation can now anticipate a more favourable out come. In addition more sophisticated diagnostic methods have revealed the presence of minor defects in ovarian function in some patients previously labelled as 'unexplained infertility'. The identification of such problems can only lead to further therapeutic success. The contents of this volume reflect many different aspects of the study of ovulation including the monitoring of both follicular growth and the luteal phase, the role of prolactin and the treatment of ovulatory dysfunction. We are sure that the wide range of topics will evoke continued interest in these subjects. We extend our thanks to the invited speakers for their excellent contributions in lecture and essay form and express our gratitude for the unfailing help we received from the staff of MTP Press in the preparation of this volume.

(Honours School) degree in Zoology, I was asked by my advisor, the late Professor Vishwa Nath, to make comparative cytological studies of oogenesis in birds for my M. Sc. (Honours School) thesis submitted to the Panjab University in 1956. Using the classical techniques of cytology, I studied the various aspects of follicle growth and atresia in five species of birds. Professor Vishwa Nath, who himself devoted most of his life to the study of the comparative cytology of gametogenesis in animals, was so much impressed by my findings on avian oogenesis that he asked me to continue my research work for the Ph. D. degree under his supervision. During my research work on avian oogenesis, I became very much interested in further comparative study of ovarian follicles in vertebrates and thus decided to make comparative, morphological and histochemical studies of ovarian follicles in reptiles, birds and mammals. Actually, very little information was available in this regard in 1957 when I started working for the Ph. D. degree. In subsequent years, I and my numerous dedicated and highly motivated M. Sc. and Ph. D. students con tinued to make comparative, morphological, histochemical, biochemical and physiological studies of ovarian follicles in all groups of vertebrates. In connection with the subject of this book, I would like to make special mention of my two brilliant students, namely Dr. S. K. Varma and Dr. R. K.

Over thirty years ago, the introduction of medications that were capable of inducing ovarian function through indirect or direct gonadotropin stimulation revolutionized the treatment of reproductive disorders in both men and women. This book covers all aspects of ovulation induction that a clinician needs to know including all known current stimulation protocols and induction strategies. It is directed at all gynaecologists, infertility professionals, both medical and paramedical including postgraduate students.

Book excerpt: Control of Ovulation focuses on the process of ovulation. The book first discusses the research on the functions of the pituitary gonadotropins in the induction of ovulation in rats. Summary and conclusions are provided. The text underscores follicular development and ovular maturation and ovulation in ovarian tissues transplanted to the eyes. Morphologic observations; fertility of follicular ova from ovarian transplants; and rate of formation of maturing follicles are described. The selection also explains the functions of steroids in the control of mammalian ovulation; interactions between the central nervous system and hormones triggering ovulation; and the pituitary stalk and ovulation. The text also highlights the interactions between the central nervous system and hormones influencing ovulation. Topics include effects of high dosages of estrogen or testosterone; afterreaction to coitus; effects of new progestogens; and effects of pituitary and placental hormones. The book also takes note of the relationship of the preoptic region of the brain with ovulation. The text also looks at the mechanisms that control the ovulation of avian and mammalian follicles and hormonal augmentation of fertility in cattle and sheep. The selection is a vital source of reference for readers interested to study the process of ovulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one learn to stimulate ovulation? Often by oneself, when there is no opportunity to benefit from a mentor’s experience. But options abound regarding the evaluation strategy, protocol design, gonadotropin preparations, posology, treatment duration, and when and how to trigger ovulation. Proper, safe stimulation requires critical anticipation of ovarian reactions. There seems to be little evidence-based consensus in the field of ovarian stimulation. Though they all face the same situation, there seem to be nearly as many procedures as there are clinicians in the field; as a result, approaches may vary within a given fertility center or even in the same team. Even though efforts have been made to arrive at a general consensus, the basic guidelines are often reinterpreted according to individual inclinations; hence the need to turn to experience-based decisions. This book is based on the author’s experience gathered over forty years and more than 30,000 cycles of classical and IVF ovulation stimulations, particularly the thousand most recent cycles that resulted in a clinical pregnancy. It is not intended as a “perfect solution”, as other approaches certainly remain valid. Rather, the book presents the author’s own analysis and insights gained from managing thousands of stimulation cycles.
