The poem has remained marginal, read either as a reversal of the Ars Amatoria's teaching that brings the world of Ovidian elegy to a banal end, or as an over-determined supplement to the Ars which ironically fails in its ostensible aim of 'curing' the dissatisfied lover. While recent work has explored how the poem functions not just as a palinode to, but also as a continuation of, the Ars, the critical status quo continues to present it as a minor appendage rather than as an important chapter in Ovid's project as a poet of desire. Victoria Rimell's commentary resets critical perspectives by reading the Remedia as distinctive and original, and as a pivotal text within Ovid's oeuvre as a whole. In her immersive, creatively interpretative guide to the poem, the Remedia emerges as an intricate work that interacts with medical texts, works on rhetoric, law, magic and ritual, philosophical thinking about self-discipline, the irrational, consolation and therapy for the soul, as well as with Greco-Roman satire, lyric, epigram, and traditions of didactic and erotodidactic verse. The poem, Rimell argues, is a key node in Ovid's development of a poetics of paradox, reversibility, and auto-immunity.

Rather than aligning them with the stereotypical roles of Roman women, motherhood enables the Ovidian heroines to challenge traditional norms with irreverent perspectives on gender categories and familial relationships. To confront these perspectives and overcome the dialectic between the (male) voice of the poet and the (female) voice of the heroines, Seeking the Mothers in Ovid's "Heroides" argues for a form of polyphonic "cooperation" between the two voices, thus providing new angles on ironical discourse and gender fluidity within the Heroides. By reading the Heroides both through feminist theory and against Ovid's poetic production, Simona Martorana provides a novel approach to describe how motherhood enhances the heroines' agency, drawing on works of Kristeva, Irigaray, Butler, Mulvey, Cavarero, Braidotti, and Ettinger. The application of theory is flexible throughout Seeking the Mothers in Ovid's "Heroides" and tailored to the nuances of specific passages rather than being uniformly imposed on the ancient text. Seeking the Mothers in Ovid's "Heroides" reveals how the irony, ambiguity, and polyphony intrinsic to Ovid's poetry are amplified by the heroines' poetic voices. The Ars amatoria circulated in medieval France and England as an authoritative treatise on desire; consequently, the sexualities of the medieval West are haunted by the imperial Roman constructions of desire that emerge from Ovid's text. The Ars amatoria ironically proposes the erotic potential of violence, and this aspect of the Ars proved to be enormously influential. Ovid's discourse on erotic violence provides a script for Heloise's epistolary expression of desire for Abelard. The Roman de la Rose extends the directives of the Ars with a rhetorical flourish and poetic excess that tests the limits of Ovidian irony. While Christine de Pizan critiqued the representations of erotic violence in the Rose, Chaucer appropriates the Ovidian discourse from the Roman de la Rose to construct the Wife of Bath—a female figure that today's readers find uncannily familiar. Well written and provocative, this book will interest scholars of premodern literature, especially those who work on Medieval English and French, as well as classical, texts. Marilynn Desmond draws on feminist and queer theory, which places Ovid's Art and the Wife of Bath at the cutting edge of debates in gender and sexuality.
