Book Synopsis Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades by : National Research Council

This book was released on 2007-04-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first in a congressionally mandated series of biennial evaluations of the progress being made by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a multibillion-dollar effort to restore historical water flows to the Everglades and return the ecosystem closer to its natural state, before it was transformed by drainage and by urban and agricultural development. The Restoration plan, which was launched in 1999 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District, includes more than 40 major projects that are expected to be completed over the next three decades. The report finds that progress has been made in developing the scientific basis and management structures needed to support a massive effort to restore the Florida Everglades ecosystem. However, some important projects have been delayed due to several factors including budgetary restrictions and a project planning process that that can be stalled by unresolved scientific uncertainties. The report outlines an alternative approach that can help the initiative move forward even as it resolves remaining scientific uncertainties. The report calls for a boost in the rate of federal spending if the restoration of Everglades National Park and other projects are to be completed on schedule.

Book Synopsis Engineering by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee
Download or read book Engineering written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering is a critical component of the national economy and of society in general. The Committee is convinced that the strength of the UK's engineering base means that the UK can play a major part in solving global problems such as climate change, food and water supply, energy security and economic instability. Engineering involves skills, higher education and innovation, and encompasses research and development, design, production, distribution and services. The Committee takes a case study approach in this report, exploring key themes through the lenses of nuclear engineering, plastic electronics engineering, geo-engineering and engineering in Government. It notes concerns about the UK's capacity to deliver a new generation of nuclear power stations, and there are significant skills shortages. The plastic electronics case study highlighted the potential opportunity afforded to the UK through the support of emerging, innovative industries, but we are likely to miss out on the economic return associated with translating the findings of research into commercialised technologies. The global nature of many engineering challenges was highlighted during the discussion of geo-engineering research, and it is essential that the views of the science, engineering and social science communities be seen as complementary sources of expertise in policy-making. Engineering in government demonstrated that engineering advice and scientific advice offer different things, and that this should be recognised in the policy process. Government does not have sufficient in-house engineering expertise and engineering advice is frequently not sought early enough during policy formulation (for example on eco-towns, renewable energy and large IT projects). There should be a greater level of engineering expertise in the generalist civil service as well as more engineering policy specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the question: how effective are countries in promoting the innovation needed to facilitate an energy transition? At the heart of the book is a set of empirical case studies covering supply and demand side technologies at different levels of maturity in a variety of countries. The case studies are set within an analytical framework encompassing the functions of technological innovation systems and innovation metrics. The book concludes with lessons and recommendations for effective policy intervention.

Download or read book Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC) written by Ali Zamani Paydar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear engineers advancing the energy transition are understanding more about the next generation of nuclear plants; however, it is still difficult to access all the critical types, concepts, and applications in one location. Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC): A New Nuclear Power Plant Perspective Producing Energy gives engineers and nuclear engineering researchers the comprehensive tools to get up to date on the latest technology supporting generation IV nuclear plant systems. After providing a brief history of this area, alternative technology is discussed such as electromagnetic pumps, heat pipes as control devices, Nuclear Air-Brayton Combined Cycles integration, and instrumentation helping nuclear plants to provide dispatchable electricity to the grid and heat to industry. Packed with examples of all the types, benefits, and challenges involved, Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC) delivers the go-to reference that engineers need to advance safe nuclear energy as a low-carbon option. - Describes theory and concepts on generation IV technology such as advanced reactor concepts (ARC) and electromagnetic pumps, and compares different types and sizes. - Sets out the energy transition with critical carbon-free technology that can supplement intermittent power sources such as wind and solar. - Explains alternative heat storage technology, including Nuclear Air-Brayton Combined Cycles. - Introduces advanced main instrumentation systems for in-core probes.

This book was released on 2006-09-26 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concepts of data mining and data warehousing, a promising and flourishing frontier in data base systems and new data base applications and is also designed to give a broad, yet in-depth overview of the field of data mining. Data mining is a multidisciplinary field, drawing work from areas including database technology, AI, machine learning, NN, statistics, pattern recognition, knowledge based systems, knowledge acquisition, information retrieval, high performance computing and data visualization. This book is intended for a wide audience of readers who are not necessarily experts in data warehousing and data mining, but are interested in receiving a general introduction to these areas and their many practical applications. Since data mining technology has become a hot topic not only among academic students but also for decision makers, it provides valuable hidden business and scientific intelligence from a large amount of historical data. It is also written for technical managers and executives as well as for technologists interested in learning about data mining.
