This book was released on 1997 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By having the ability to acquire better traffic data, each agency has information that is more valuable to itself, to the public, and potentially to private enterprise than similar information of just a few years ago. However, several procedural and institutional questions arise when an agency contemplates undertaking the acquisition and dissemination of traffic information. To determine how other agencies have answered these questions and to provide a reference to assist in developing policy and procedures, this research project synthesized the state-of-the-practice of traffic information dissemination within the United States by conducting a survey of some of the agencies that are operating traffic management centers and disseminating traffic information. This project also synthesizes the findings.

Download or read book Megacity Mobility written by Zongzhi Li and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World population growth and economic prosperity have given rise to ever-increasing demands on cities, transportation planning, and goods movement. This growth, coupled with a slower pace of transportation capacity expansion and deteriorated facility restoration, has led to rapid changes in the transportation planning and policy environment. These stresses are particularly acute for megacities where degradation of mobility and facility performance have reached alarming rates. Addressing these transportation challenges requires innovative solutions. Megacity Mobility grapples with these challenges by addressing transportation policy, planning, and facilities in a multimodal context. It discusses innovative short- and long-term solutions for meeting current and future mobility needs for the world’s most dynamic cities by addressing the influence of urban land use on mobility, 3D spiderweb transportation planning, travel demand management, multimodal transportation with flexible capacity, efficient capacity utilization driven by new technologies, innovative transportation funding and financing, and performance-based budget allocation using asset management principles. It discusses emerging issues, highlights potential challenges affecting proposed solutions, and provides policymakers, planners, and transportation professionals a road map to achieving sustainable mobility in the 21st century. Zongzhi Li is a professor and the director of the Sustainable Transportation and Infrastructure Research (STAIR) Center at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Adrian T. Moore is vice president of policy at Reason Foundation in Washington, D.C., with focuses on privatization, transportation and urban growth, and more. Samuel R. Staley is the director of the DeVoe L. Moore Center in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy at Florida State University.

Book Synopsis Transportation Data Collection and Dissemination Practices in Delaware by : Abebaw Berihun
Download or read book Transportation Data Collection and Dissemination Practices in Delaware written by Abebaw Berihun and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) owns more than 90% of the roadways and majority of the traffic signals. To address the growing problem of congestion, delays, and overall traffic issues, DelDOT established the Transportation Management Center (TMC) in 1997. The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the global responsibilities of DelDOT-TMC and assess the process that TMC uses to gather, process, analyze, and distribute traffic and roadway weather data to the public. ☐ TMC coordinates and manages DelDOT’s response to any incident that influences the multimodal transportation system within the state of Delaware. Among other things, DelDOT-TMC collects traffic, roadway weather, and hydrological data by using over a thousand monitoring devices installed throughout the state of Delaware. After data has been obtained, TMC analyzes and disseminates real-time travel information to the public through DelDOT’s website (online interactive maps), smartphone application (DelDOT Mobile App), traffic advisory radio (WTMC 1380 AM), as well as multiple social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Blog, and Flickr. ☐ This research presented a step-by-step guideline on the standard way of conducting traffic data collection set by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). This thesis reviewed manual and automatic methods of traffic counting and provided detailed information on traffic volume and vehicle classification studies. The purpose of presenting the manuals is to provide the standard data collection guidelines that all transportation management centers, including DelDOT-TMC, are required to follow when collecting traffic data. ☐ This research also provided a detailed analysis of DelDOT-TMC websites and compared it to selected Department of Transportation websites such as Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Texas, and Virginia. The purpose of the comparison was to analyze the data sources, accessibility, presentation formats, and style for each state and see how it compared to DelDOT-TMC. Although there were some similarities, there were two main differences that stood out the most. It was discovered that TMC Extranet had an extremely long website registration approval process than the other states and traffic counts provided is only in Portable Document Format (PDF). Also, TMC disseminated traffic and roadway weather information through the mobile application, among other sources, but Delaware’s hands-free law prevented drivers from using it. The overall results revealed that DelDOT-TMC provided limited traffic and roadway weather data, and presentation formats to the public compared to the other states.

Book excerpt: Two conferences on Refocusing Transportation Planning for the 21st Century were held in 1999 following passage of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). The first conference focused on the identification of key trends, issues, and general areas of research. The results of Conference I, which produced stand-alone products, were used as input for Conference II. The second conference had the specific objective of producing research problem statements. Its mission was to review the results of the first conference by developing these statements. Conference II produced a number of detailed research statements that form the basis for the National Agenda for Transportation Planning Research. The proceedings of both conferences are presented in this report.
