Book excerpt: The Next Linear Collider (NLC) requires a substantial system of beam collimators to minimize the halo-related backgrounds at the interaction point, provide machine protection against errant pulses, and limit radiation doses throughout the accelerator. In particular, the NLC design contains a complete 5-dimensional (x, x(prime), y, y(prime), energy) collimation system at the entrance and exit of the main linac; transverse collimators at the electron and positron sources, at the 250 MeV point in the injector linac, and immediately upstream of the damping rings; a series of collimators at points with substantial z-energy correlation for longitudinal collimation; and a final set of transverse and energy collimators in the final focus, a few hundred meters from the IP. We describe the systems above and estimate the intensity of the halo at each point, as well as the efficiency with which the halo is removed by the collimators.

Book excerpt: Experience indicates that beam collimation will be an essential element of the next generation eE− linear colliders. A proposal for using nonlinear lenses to drive beam tails to large amplitudes was presented in a previous paper. Here we study the optimization of such systems including effects of wakefields and optical aberrations. Protection and design of the scrapers in these systems are discussed. 9 refs., 7 figs.

Book excerpt: The Linear Collider subgroup of the Accelerator Physics working group concerned itself with all aspects of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) design from the end of the accelerating structure to and through the interaction region. Within this region are: (1) a collimation section, (2) muon protection (of the detector from the collimator), (3) final focus system, (4) interaction point physics, and (5) detector masking from synchrotron radiation and beam-beam pair production. These areas of study are indicated schematically in Fig. 1. The parameters for the Next Linear Collider are still in motion, but attention has settled on a handful of parameter sets. Energies under consideration vary from 0.5 to 1.5 TeV in the center of mass, and luminosities vary from 1033 to 1034 cm−2s−1. To be concrete we chose as a guide for our studies the parameter sets labeled F and G, Table 1 from Palmer. These cover large and small crossing angle cases and 0.4 m to 1.8 m of free length at the interaction point.

Book excerpt: High brightness beams with sub-micron dimensions are needed to produce a high luminosity for electron-positron collisions in the Next Linear Collider (NLC). To generate these small beam sizes, a large number of issues dealing with intense beams have to be resolved. Over the past few years many have been successfully addressed but most need experimental verification. Some of these issues are beam dynamics, emittance control, instrumentation, collimation, and beam-beam interactions. Recently, the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) has proven the viability of linear collider technology and is an excellent test facility for future linear collider studies.

Book excerpt: The authors present a new conceptual and optical design for the Next Linear Collider post-linac collimation system. Energy collimation and passive protection against off-energy beams are achieved in a system with large horizontal dispersion and vertical betatron functions. Betatron collimation is performed in a relatively low-beta (FODO-like) lattice in which only thin spoilers intercept particles near the beam core, while thick absorbers maintain a large stay-clear from the beam. Two possible schemes for the spoilers are considered: one in which the spoilers are capable of tolerating a certain number of damaging interceptions per collider run (consumable spoilers), and one in which the spoilers are potentially damaged on every machine pulse and are self-repairing (renewable spoilers). The collimation efficiency of the system is evaluated, considering both halo particles which are rescattered into the beam and muon secondaries which are passed to the interaction region. The authors conclude that the new design is a promising candidate for the NLC post-linac system.

Book excerpt: This report describes studies performed in the framework of the Collimation Task Force organized to support the work of the International Linear Collider Technical Review Committee. The post-linac beam-collimation systems in the TESLA, JLC/NLC and CLIC linear-collider designs are compared using the same computer code under the same assumptions. Their performance is quantified in terms of beam-halo and synchrotron-radiation collimation efficiency. The performance of the current designs varies across projects, and does not always meet the original design goals. But these comparisons suggest that achieving the required performance in a future linear collider is feasible.

Book excerpt: Experience with the SLC has indicated that backgrounds caused by the tails of the transverse beam distribution will be a serious problem for a next generation linear collider. Mechanical scrapers may not provide the best solution, because they may be damaged by the tiny, intense beams, and also because they may induce wakefield kicks large enough to cause emittance dilution. In this paper, we present a possible solution, which uses several nonlinear lenses to drive the tails of the beam to large amplitudes where they can by more easily scraped mechanically. Simulations of several different schemes are presented and evaluated with respect to effectiveness, tolerances and wakefield effects. 4 refs., 6 figs.

Book excerpt: This Zeroth-Order Design Report (ZDR) for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) has been completed as a feasibility study for a TeV-scale linear collider that incorporates a room-temperature accelerator powered by rf microwaves at 11.424 GHz--similar to that presently used in the SLC, but at four times the rf frequency. The purpose of this study is to examine the complete systems of such a collider, to understand how the parts fit together, and to make certain that every required piece has been included. The''design'' presented here is not fully engineered in any sense, but to be assured that the NLC can be built, attention has been given to a number of critical components and issues that present special challenges. More engineering and development of a number of mechanical and electrical systems remain to be done, but the conclusion of this study is that indeed the NLC is technically feasible and can be expected to reach the performance levels required to perform research at the TeV energy scale. Volume II covers the following: collimation systems; IP switch and big bend; final focus; the interaction region; multiple bunch issues; control systems; instrumentation; machine protection systems; NLC reliability considerations; NLC conventional facilities. Also included are four appendices on the following topics: An RF power source upgrade to the NLC; a second interaction region for gamma-gamma, gamma-electron; ground motion: theory and measurement; and beam-based feedback: theory and implementation.

Book excerpt: Each major step toward higher energy particle accelerators relies on new technology. Linear colliders require beams of unprecedented brightness and stability. Instrumentation and control technology is the single most critical tool that enables linear colliders to extend the energy reach. In this paper the authors focus on the most challenging aspects of linear collider instrumentation systems. In the Next Linear Collider (NLC), high brightness multibunch e/e− beams, with I{sub {+-}} = 1012 particles/pulse and sigma{sub x, y} (approximately) 50 x 5 mu-m, originate in damping rings and are subsequently accelerated to several hundred GeV in 2 X-band 11,424 MHz linacs from which they emerge with typical sigma{sub x, y} (approximately) 7 x 1 mu-m. Following a high power collimation section the e/e− beams are focused to sigma{sub x, y} (approximately) 300 x 5 nm at the interaction point. In this paper they review the beam intensity, position and profile monitors (x, y, z), mechanical vibration sensing and stabilization systems, long baseline RF distribution systems and beam collimation hardware.

Book excerpt: We describe linac protection and a conventional collimation system appropriate for a next linear collider. The linac accelerating structure can be protected from ''worst credible failures'' by a system of sacrificial spoilers. For the collimation system we consider the effects of transverse wakefields and the transmission, heating, mechanical stress, and edge-scattering properties of scrapers. We require local chromatic correction, scraper survival for two pulses of a mis-steered beam containing 0.5 x 1012 particles per pulse, average interception capability of 1 % of the beam at any scraper, and zero particles incident on the final doublet in the final focus system. We describe emittance dependent limitations of this system and present formulae which determine scraper gaps. Conventional collimation systems appear adequate to collimate the beams of next generation 0.5 and 1.0 TeV c.m. linear colliders. Though we have combined functional units where possible to reduce total length, the length of our lattices for these systems are longer than 1 km per linac.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Linear Collider (ILC) is a mega-scale, technically complex project, requiring large financial resources and cooperation of thousands of scientists and engineers from all over the world. Such a big and expensive project has to be discussed publicly, and the planned goals have to be clearly formulated. This book advocates for the demand for the project, motivated by the current situation in particle physics. The natural and most powerful way of obtaining new knowledge in particle physics is to build a new collider with a larger energy. In this approach, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was created and is now operating at the world record center of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Although the design of colliders with a larger energy of 50-100 TeV has been discussed, the practical realization of such a project is not possible for another 20-30 years. Of course, many new results are expected from LHC over the next decade. However, we must also think about other opportunities, and in particular, about the construction of more dedicated experiments. There are many potentially promising projects, however, the most obvious possibility to achieve significant progress in particle physics in the near future is the construction of a linear e+e- collider with energies in the range (250-1000) GeV. Such a project, the ILC, is proposed to be built in Kitakami, Japan. This book will discuss why this project is important and which new discoveries can be expected with this collider.

Book excerpt: With the advent of the Superconducting Super Collider and other new technologies, coupled with the development of particle astrophysics and other non-accelerator based physics, research in high energy particle physics in the nineties promises to break into new and exciting frontiers. To chart the directions and opportunities for this new decade, the 1990 Summer Study on High Energy Physics was organized in Snowmass, Colorado. Like previous Snowmass Summer Studies, it plays a key role in shaping research directions and in drawing the particle physics community together. This book of the proceedings examines the full spectrum of important scientific issues and opportunities in high energy particle physics in the decade of the 1990's, including research at existing and anitcipated hadron-hadron, e+e-, and ep colliders; research at fixed-target facilities; the scientific potential of possible new facilities such as B factories; particle astrophysics and non-accelerator based physics; and accelerator and detector initiatives. It also discusses the physics and technical aspects of the initial Superconducting Super Collider experimental program. This volume, therefore, offers a captivating glimpse into the future of high energy physics, and makes essential reading for all physicists interested in assessing the exciting new research opportunities the future technologies would bring.
