Book Synopsis Music Entries at Stationers' Hall, 1710–1818 by : Michael Kassler
Download or read book Music Entries at Stationers' Hall, 1710–1818 written by Michael Kassler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Copyright Act of 1709 protected proprietors of books and music printed after 10 April 1710 who gave copies to the Company of Stationers in London. Upon receipt of a copy, usually within days of its first publication, the Stationers' Hall warehouse keeper entered details into a register. They included the date of registration, the name of the work's proprietor (its author or, if copyright had been transferred, its publisher), and the work's full title, which normally named the composer and the writer of any text and often named the work's performers and dedicatee. Although some publishers put the words 'Entered at Stationers' Hall' on title-pages without actually depositing copies, the information in the registers about the many works that were registered has significant bibliographic value. Because the music entries have not previously been printed and access to them has been difficult, they generally have been ignored by cataloguers and scholars, with the consequence that numerous musical works of this period have been misdated in libraries and reference books. This book makes available, for the first time, the full text of the music entries at Stationers' Hall from 1710 to 1810 and abbreviated details of works entered from 1811 to 1818. Its value is enhanced by the inclusion of locations of copies of most works, together with indexes of composers, authors, performers and dedicatees, and an explanatory introduction by the compiler.

Book Synopsis Celebrity, Performance, Reception by : David Worrall
Download or read book Celebrity, Performance, Reception written by David Worrall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1800 London had as many theatre seats for sale as the city's population. This was the start of the capital's rise as a centre for performing arts. Bringing to life a period of extraordinary theatrical vitality, David Worrall re-examines the beginnings of celebrity culture amidst a monopolistic commercial theatrical marketplace. The book presents an innovative transposition of social assemblage theory into performance history. It argues that the cultural meaning of drama changes with every change in the performance location. This theoretical model is applied to a wide range of archival materials including censors' manuscripts, theatre ledger books, performance schedules, unfamiliar play texts and rare printed sources. By examining prompters' records, box office receipts and benefit night takings, the study questions the status of David Garrick, Sarah Siddons and Edmund Kean, and recovers the neglected actress, Elizabeth Younge, and her importance to Edmund Burke.

Book Synopsis Operas in English by : Margaret R. Griffel
Download or read book Operas in English written by Margaret R. Griffel and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1999-10-30 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operas in English have a long, rich, and varied history encompassing everything from the English masques of the 17th century to today's crossover music dramas such as Harvey Milk and Rent. This book covers in detail more than 3,500 English-texted operas by composers including Purcell, Handel, Britten, Bernstein, and Musgrave. Most were born in English-speaking countries, but the list also includes such composers as Weill (his American stage works) and Henze (his operas with dual English-German texts). The work provides specific information not accessible in the usual sources, such as premiere details, plots, characters, and casts. The work begins with an historical overview. Many entries include scores, librettos, bibliographies, and discographies. Cross-references four appendixes (composers, librettists, authors and sources, and a chronology), and three indexes (characters, performers, and general) make this an exceptionally useful reference tool.
