Book excerpt: Many faculty and graduate students from other countries expect language difficulties when they teach, but are unprepared for other surprises: different cultures make different assumptions about the academic background of college students, how students learn, the appropriate roles of teachers and students, and even the fundamental purpose of a college education. The third edition of "Teaching American Students" explains the expectations of undergraduates at American colleges and universities and offers practical strategies for teaching, including how to give clear presentations, how to teach interactively, and how to communicate effectively. Also included are illustrative examples as well as advice from international faculty and teaching assistants. Appendices offer concrete suggestions on topics from planning the first day of class to grading papers and problem sets.

Book excerpt: Student teaching abroad programs provide American students who major in teacher education an opportunity to complete their student teaching internships either partially, or wholly, abroad. This is an important professional opportunity for American student teachers who would like to build their global teaching experiences, especially as the issue of diversity becomes increasingly important for the United States. In this study, I interpret the experiences of former participants of a student teaching abroad program through participant interviews. This study helps to unearth how the effects of these teachers' international experiences cognitively and professionally persist or dissipate once they return to the U.S. and begin their teaching careers. Based on the findings, I discuss the most significant ways that student teaching abroad impacts individual teachers as professionals and its impact on the teaching profession as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenario One Imagine a teacher walking into a classroom. The students stood up to greet the teacher on his or her entrance through the door, and remained standing until they were beckoned to sit down. The students then sat down, with their eyes fixed on the teacher, waiting for instructions on what to do next. The teacher was in absolute control, knew exactly what was going on, and what to expect from the students. On their part, the students knew exactly what to expect from the teacher; standing up to greet the teacher on his or her entrance into the classroom was normal. In fact, it was cultural. They had therefore not done anything extraordinary. The teacher proceeded to have a verygood class period. Nothing different was expected; this was a normal day. Scenario Two Imagine the same teacher, with the same expectations as in Scenario One, walking into a different classroom. The students did not stand up to greet him or her; they did not know about such a tradition, nor was it a part of their culture. In fact, some were standing and chatting with friends as he or she entered the classroom.
