Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though incomplete at the time of his death in 1849, Chopin's Projet de méthode was nonetheless revolutionary in many respects. But with his Fundamental Pattern, Chopin announced the recognition, if not discovery, of the keyboard's extraordinary topographical symmetry and postulated a core formulation for a new "pianistic" pedagogy. More than a hundred years later the now-legendary Heinrich Neuhaus would passionately plead for this pedagogy and a pianism rooted in it. Natural Fingering explores this remarkable symmetry, significantly as it sheds light on fingering matters for the now vast catalogue of repertoire. It also examines the revolutionary impact of equal temperament on compositional key choice as well as the liberating influence of Charles Eschmann-Dumur's unique discoveries regarding symmetrical inversion. Author Jon Verbalis develops principles for a topographically-based fingering strategy that reflect a surprising compatibility of this fixed symmetrical organization with the most efficient biokinetic capabilities of the pianist's playing mechanism. He addresses previously neglected or overlooked technical aspects of pianism as they relate to movement in keyboard space generally as well as fingering specifically. Symmetrical fingerings for all the fundamental forms are presented in innovative, instructive format. The reader will also find an unusually extensive, in-depth discussion of double note challenges. Answering Neuhaus's call for the reappraisal of a certain pedagogical status quo, several chapters are devoted to the relevant implications of Chopin's Fundamental Pattern. The author also advances guidelines for a progressive implementation of natural fingering principles from the very start, as well as "retooling" for teachers and students alike. Of special note are the cross-hand major and minor scales for the earliest stages, in which the necessity of thumb under/hand over pivoting actions is eliminated. Natural Fingering is the first comprehensive discussion of fingering solutions for pianists since Hummel's monumental treatise of 1828. The book is complemented by a companion website, which serves as a supplement to the printed edition. The website features copious excerpts from the extant repertoire, extended discussions on relevant topics, and a comprehensive manual of the fundamental forms with symmetrically adjusted fingerings.

Book excerpt: In a readily-accessible, easy-to-read format, this book presents useful hints, suggestions, anecdotes and lists that will help you to look within, identify, and ultimately achieve your personal and professional goals. From getting started with the actual physical space that is your office to the incorporation and financial establishment of your practice, to dealing with the most unexpected, unpredictable clients and their expectations and to planning for the unexpected, the answers are here. The straightforward "hands-on" approach makes reading simple, the inclusion of anecdotes adds realism and interest, the quick checks provide instant reminders and cues and the self-disclosure questions aid in self-understanding. All of the suggestions are grounded in practice. Some may be familiar to you already; some may be novel and unexpected. Sometimes, however, simple reminders or hints can be the most powerful and with that in mind, this book was written in an attempt to demystify some of the confusion and/or uncertainty surrounding the successful establishment and functioning of a private practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book you will find treatment options for Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). RSI is an umbrella term for a variety of pain in muscles, tendons and nerves. It is usually caused by repetitive movements performed over a longer period of time. This book focuses on the prevention and treatment of upper body pain in people who work on computers for several hours each day. Inside you will find information on how to set up an ergonomic workplace and how to work in a healthy way. Stretching, strengthening and nerve mobilization exercises as well as trigger point massages are illustrated and explained. Another chapter deals with the psychological consequences of this prolonged injury. There is also an introduction into the basics of RSI and I will tell you my own personal journey from hardly being able to hold a glass of water to being pain free and working on the computer again. In 2006 I first experienced severe pain in my forearms after working on the computer intensively. I was 20 years old at that time. In 2007 I had been seen by many doctors, but no one had any idea. Mid-year I couldn't even hold a cup without pain. I spent time on the internet and read a couple of English books on the topic of RSI. 2008: My condition improved significantly after setting up an ergonomic workstation and working with a physical therapist. I started publishing my experiences in German on the internet. In 2009 I was almost healed. However, I still had to perform stretches and take short breaks regularly. I published my story as a German book. In 2010 I had rebuilt all my muscles and I was able to work again on the computer just as before. 2015: Thousands of people have visited my website and/or have bought my book in the past years. To overcome the language barrier I decided to translate everything into English and publish it for free on my website and as a book.
